Love travelling and always looking for recommendations. Where has been your favourite and least favourite holiday you have ever visited and why?
So far my favourite has been the Canadian Rockies - amazing scenery.
Least favourite has been Benidorm - got terrible food poisoning and was a bit too “Brits abroad”

Best - Puglia. The food and the beaches were just great. Also love the north of Italy & Berlin

Worst - Gran Canaria. Resort was at the top of a ridiculously steep hill and the food was chips & whatever. But always chips

Best
UK: Devon, Northumberland, Gower, Cumbria, Scarborough/Whitby/North York Moors, Dorset.
Europe: Denmark (especially Copenhagen), Netherlands (not keen on Amsterdam though), Rhodes, Cyprus, Normandy, Umbria, Austria (especially Graz, Salzburg, Zillertal), Jersey.
Further afield: Block Island, Maine, Okavango Delta, New Zealand (especially Auckland), Melbourne, Luxor/Aswan.

Worst
UK: Clacton, Cleethorpes, Whitley Bay, Bluestone (no idea why people on MN rave about it), Edinburgh.
Europe: Paris, Algarve, Ibiza, Geneva, Munich, Cork, Genoa.
Further afield: Boston, Sydney, Harare, Cairo.

Personally I don’t mind Benidorm (possibly because I’ve only been out of season). It’s really rather lovely in February.

mummythedoctor · 06/10/2019 17:36

Best - Norwegian cruise
Worst - Tenerife (but that may have been our fault for picking the wrong hotel!)

WelcomeToShootingStars · 06/10/2019 17:40

Favourite is probably a road trip we took around southern states of USA, not planned or anything.

Least favourite is absolutely definitely Turkey. I couldn't be paid to go back there.

wingsandstrings · 06/10/2019 17:42

Best: Kenya - the coast, Nairobi and national parks all amazing in their own way. Easy to get around, no hassle, super friendly people, stunning and fascinating countryside, wildlife and culture.
Worst: Morocco - you couldn't pay me to return. Hassle hassle hassle, often very aggressive. Hassle because we were tourists and they wanted money from us, hassle because we are English and they dislike the English, hassle because I am female and white and therefore fair game.

kitk · 06/10/2019 17:43

Best Sorrento

Worst Bugibba in Malta. Not all of Malta is shit but I didn't like it there!

WelcomeToShootingStars · 06/10/2019 17:48

Oh I also absolutely love Munich. Its my favourite place in the world. We've also had absolutely amazing trips to Devon.

I hated Egypt because I was followed to my room by a hotel worker who tried to force himself on me. And I hated New York because its a shitehole, the rudeness is breathtaking and there's just far too many people and its full of shitty tourist traps.

wingsandstrings · 06/10/2019 17:51

And for more local destinations:
Best: Donegal and Wicklow mountains. Both stunning, and lots of fun outdoors stuff to do like climbing and riding. Brittany, as if not more beautiful than Cornwall but better food and cheaper.
Worst: I do find Devon and Cornwall over-rated, well certainly overpriced.

Weymo · 06/10/2019 17:53

Best:
Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Beautiful wilderness scenery
Ibiza 🇪🇸 Secret rocky coves and 1990s club atmosphere
Tunisia🇹🇳 Hospitable, contrasting, culture shock

Worst: France 🇫🇷 Dull scenery, dismissive people, flat ambience

Venger · 06/10/2019 17:53

I've enjoyed every holiday destination we've ever been to except for one and that was Tunisia. I dont know if it was the time of year or the resort or what but I hated it and couldn't wait to get home. Hotel staff were rude, if we went out of the hotel the locals were friendly when trying to sell us stuff and then openly hostile if we didn't want to buy anything. Several times I was physically grabbed and pulled into shops as I passed by the doorway and then before I could say anything I would have bracelets fastened to my wrists/handbags hung on me/perfume sprayed over me so that when DH came into the shop a few seconds later to retrieve me they would be ready to demand a "tip" in exchange for the "gift" they'd given his wife. You couldn't even sit on the private beach for some peace as people would swim/wade up and then start hassling around the sunbeds. Hotel security removed a boy who was selling fruit, he couldn't have been more than 12 or 13, and DH had given him some money for a pot of fruit salad. Security took the money off him, threw him over the fence, and then one of them went round the other side and audibly gave him a kicking. When we told the rep she just shrugged and said "that's Tunisia for you".

It's the one place I'd never go back to.

greenlavender · 06/10/2019 17:56

Best: Thailand, Sri Lanka, New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Lisbon, Paris, Istanbul, Luxor, Cornwall...etc
Worse by quite a way: Hurghada

Fuma · 06/10/2019 18:00

Turkey is probably the worst. Not the place itself which is actually very beautiful but Jesus Christ the men! Fucking menaces, all of them. Just a pain in the fucking arse.

For best, all my favourite holidays have been in Spain, I think. Especially Seville. Seville is my happy place. So beautiful that you can't quite believe what you're seeing, loads of interesting things to look at, the music is great, the food is great although it does get really fucking hot. But it is amazing.

Zenithbear · 06/10/2019 18:01

Worst: Blackpool nothing nice about the place whatsoever.

Best: Cruises anywhere been on loads to so many different places and tbh each one has been brilliant, also Budapest, Dorset, Peak District, Chicago.

Roselilly36 · 06/10/2019 18:07

Best, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Lanzarote, Florida, Isle of Wight.

Worst, Menorca, to be fair we went in Aug and way too hot for us, Hastings, Bognor Regis, Tenerife.

RainbowAlicorn · 06/10/2019 18:08

Best - Scotland

Worst - Ibiza

Svolvaer · 06/10/2019 18:11

Best - cruise up the Norwegian coast on the "post boat" - the most beautiful, breathtaking scenery. Costa Rica - someone upthread said the most beautiful pace on earth, she's not far wrong! The people are so lovely and friendly, the wildlife amazing and they are very environment conscious. Cape Cod is also very lovely.

Worst - Rhodes - the main town has a beautiful, mediaeval district but the rest of the island is not really very attractive and, strangely, has more fur coat showrooms than I've ever seen anywhere, literally dozens of the along the main highways. The beaches aren't up to much either. It's not a terrible place, just disappointing.

Fedupofballs · 06/10/2019 18:11

Best - Northumberland, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Greek islands, Maldives, Spain (near Granada)
Worst - sharm el sheikh, we were going to snorkel but then the shark attacks happened and you couldn’t go in the water. The food was pretty awful, we got sick and we didn’t feel safe at all.

palahvah · 06/10/2019 18:11

@stompythedinosaur and @chemenger @jarviscockatiel Any tips for Costa Rica? Looking at it for a last minute 10-14 days with a girlfriend at the end of the month

Whatsername7 · 06/10/2019 18:12

Best: road trip across America, Mexico
Worst: Polperro

lifeforus · 06/10/2019 18:14

Best: safari in Kenya
Worst: hen weekend in Fuengirola. It hammered down all weekend and half of the tacky bars were closed

Bloodybridget · 06/10/2019 18:19

Have had wonderful holidays in Wales, Scotland (west coast, east coast, Borders), Paris, Brittany, other areas of rural France, Catalonia and Andalusia, Cornwall, Devon, Derbyshire, Northumberland, Lake District, Adriatic coast of Italy, the Marche, New York, New England.

Marrakech was fascinating but DP hated it and I wouldn't go again. Ghastly guest house made IoW very grim. Terrible weather and very weird hotel - and pretty awful food - in IoM ditto, although I enjoyed the different modes of transport, and met some lovely people.

We have a friend who is a travel journalist, who says he has never been anywhere he didn't enjoy - I love that!

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 06/10/2019 18:20

I want to know why people had Ireland and Scotland as their worst
And St Bees. Disclaimer, I've never been but thought it looked a nice place to visit

Kahlua4me · 06/10/2019 18:23

Best- Perth, Australia. Lovely relaxing holiday and saw lots in the time we were there.

Worst- Marmaris, Turkey. Went with a friend and got hacked off with being permanently harassed by the men there. Plus we both had d&v whilst there. Never again!

chemenger · 06/10/2019 18:36

When we went to St Bees (a good few years ago) it was definitely in the running for dullest place on Earth, no cafes for a coffee and cake, one mediocre restaurant, nothing to do. Miles from anywhere. We stayed in a really disappointing holiday house as well, which didn’t help.

MaryShelley1818 · 06/10/2019 18:43

@Venger I completely agree!
I’ve pretty much loved every single holiday I’ve ever been on but Tunisia was an absolute hell hole. I’d never go back.

Top of the places I’ve been are: Orlando, Reykjavik, New York, Vegas, Maldives, Austria and Australia.
