Love travelling and always looking for recommendations. Where has been your favourite and least favourite holiday you have ever visited and why?
So far my favourite has been the Canadian Rockies - amazing scenery.
Least favourite has been Benidorm - got terrible food poisoning and was a bit too “Brits abroad”

Tobebythesea · 08/10/2019 20:16

Best: New Zealand, Maldives, The Galápagos Islands, Iceland, Seville, Krakow, Edinburgh, Lake District, Pembrokeshire

Worst: Sri Lanka, Naples

Looobyloo · 08/10/2019 20:25

Best: Australia
Worst: probably Cambodia because it's so blinking sad what they went through, lovely people though.

Benidorm has some lovely places to visit. You have Altea, Guadalest, Algar Waterfalls (do not go in high season) Finestrat and lots of beautiful mountain walks and hidden beaches. A walk up to the cross is worthwhile for the amazing views. I love Benidorm.

I’ve been to Paris about four times and have never found anyone to be rude. At worst professionally civil, at best genuinely friendly and helpful.
French people living in London are the true rudes, IME.

I like loads of the ‘worst’ places here, including NYC, Berlin, Scotland, Tokyo/Japan, India, Madrid, Barcelona,, Portugal...

Can’t think of anywhere I hated, but found Marrakech a bit boring. Essaouira is delightful though.

holidays987 · 08/10/2019 20:59

BEST: Greek Islands and Florida

WORST: India, without a shadow of a doubt

YesHeIsMyFirstBaby · 08/10/2019 21:10

Best - Iceland, just loved the combination of the natural wonders and the hipster restaurants! Australia, particularly the Blue Mountains, amazing scenery, and the Ayers Rock resort, great experiences. UK-wise, Loch Ness is beautiful and so peaceful.

Worst - India, mainly because I got food poisoning, but also I didn't feel very safe in the towns and especially on the roads. Also found Madeira a bit dull, but that's probably our fault for not doing our research!

CherylStreep · 08/10/2019 21:31

The Republic of Ireland can sometimes be a bit time warp-y to be fair, N.I. is usually not.

I would have said the opposite

DarlingNikita · 08/10/2019 21:45

I didn’t get food poisoning in India and never felt hassled. Maybe because I was in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, whereas most people I hear India horror stories from seem to have been in the north and/or the biggest cities.

DarlingBuds19 · 08/10/2019 22:24

I would have said the opposite

Do you mean politics, culture etc.?

I meant shops, facilities etc.

DarlingBuds19 · 08/10/2019 22:25

(that was in response to Republic of Ireland & Northern Ireland).

DarlingBuds19 · 08/10/2019 22:33

Incidentally, I'm from Northern Ireland not the Republic and have no personal/professional interest in why many posters rate Dublin badly; but I'm interested to know why?

(When I was at uni in the late 90s I met a couple of Dubliners and visited there with them, it was charming and I was quite taken with it. Returning in the early 00s and later I found it had grown a lot/fast, the demographic had changed, and it was just a much bigger, harder, more impersonal, fast moving place with less charm but I'm wondering if that why it's rated poorly or other things?)

discusstin · 08/10/2019 22:40

Best - California
Worst - Wales in the rain, Lake District in the rain.

honeyrider · 08/10/2019 23:00

Worst: New York and Rome - shit holes, felt very unsafe in Rome.

Best: Florida, various Mediterranean cruises, Philadelphia and Washington.

Meh: Paris.

TheGoogleMum · 08/10/2019 23:06

Best: Japan
Worst: North France? I was still a child so not sure where exactly but it was boring and just as cold as UK. I remember wishing we had stayed home for that one!

caperplips · 09/10/2019 13:46

These threads always amuse me no end!
People writing off places like Rome as 'shitholes' Grin
Dublin and Ireland in general also suffer badly, which is interesting Hmm

My worst was England - utter shithole filthy, boring, expensive, unfriendly people who are stuck in a time warp.

Best - anywhere not England

caperplips · 09/10/2019 13:48

In reality, I have never been anywhere I did not enjoy. Or find something to enjoy. I love to travel and have been lucky enough to be able to do so over the years. It is definitely a priority for us.

derxa · 09/10/2019 13:58

I find it ridiculous when people their best or worst place is 'Scotland'
Did you mean Wishaw or Edinburgh?

jenthelibrarian · 09/10/2019 14:02

Best: Chicago, Stockholm
Worst: Scotland. Edinburgh [twice, it was a unpleasant as I recalled] and all the rest. Either dull and rainy or dull and infested with biting flies.

DarlingNikita · 09/10/2019 15:44

I'm hoping you're deliberately deploying irony here?

Skysblue · 09/10/2019 20:26

Best: Dolomite mountains in Italy. Stunning.
Worst: Turkey.

BlueJava · 09/10/2019 21:33

Best: Japan and Thailand for culture and diving respectively
Worst; Egypt (one and only package holiday and every time we left the hotel men wouldn't leave women alone)

HyperHippo · 19/12/2019 17:18

Best - Komodo Islands, Indonesia; Mauritius; Japan; The Body Holiday, St Lucia

Worst - Cruises used to love them but they've changed these days and are overcrowded and I can't stand them; Tenerife; Dominian Republic (one of those gaint american-style all-inclusives with pumping music in the pool and swim up bar... big error!)

stargazer2030 · 19/12/2019 18:15

I loved NY, also Turkey - beautiful country with lovely people. The Greek islands are my favourite holiday destination. Love Italy. It’s interesting how different we all are.
The only place I hated was Blackpool. What a shit hole and so expensive. Dh hates the canaries - landscape, Brits abroad feel but I don’t mind.

BlaueLagune · 19/12/2019 18:22

Absolutely yes, so it is. Despite having an incredibly diverse population and landscapes, it's a shithole. If you say so. Where are you from by the way?

BlaueLagune · 19/12/2019 18:23

Never been to Blackpool, but I was reading an article about living there just a couple of weeks ago and it said it was very deprived and you have to choose your location carefully to live. With that in mind, I find it difficult to believe it's expensive, compared with, say York or London.

zonkin · 19/12/2019 18:25

Best: Bolivia, Galapagos
Worst (by a long way): Tunisia
