Love travelling and always looking for recommendations. Where has been your favourite and least favourite holiday you have ever visited and why?
So far my favourite has been the Canadian Rockies - amazing scenery.
Least favourite has been Benidorm - got terrible food poisoning and was a bit too “Brits abroad”

You said it was “too funny” that people who go to Egypt / North Africa complain when they get sexually harassed. It is implied it is their fault in the same way it is the fault of those that complain when they go to Spain in August thats it’s too hot. I think that’s quite a shitty thing to say actually

MaxNormal · 07/10/2019 11:26

UK best - Bath, Yorkshire Dales
UK worst - I'm tempted to say Blackpool but it had a certain energy and friendliness, and was so awful it was actually spectacular.

Cities abroad best - Granada, Cape Town, Seville, Cordoba
Cities abroad worst - Pisa. Dirty, run-down shithole with nothing to do apart from the obvious.
Dublin. Crap weather, unattractive, dull, unfriendly, dirty.

Scenery best - the Little Karoo in South Africa, the Wild Coast in South Africa, the Dordogne, the Spanish Pyrenees
Scenery worst - I hated the Netherlands Sad I really wanted to like it too as I love Amsterdam. It was flat, which I expected, but also really dull and dreary.

Wizzbangpop · 07/10/2019 11:40

Worst: Cornwall. Run down, tacky and vastly overrated*

Which part of Cornwall did you find Tacky? I live here and ok parts are run down. Find a county in the Uk where a part of it isn't. And I can use other adjectives some nice some not so nice. But tacky really?

Ellabella989 · 07/10/2019 11:58

Here are a few more of my love/hates:

Loved abroad - The Black Forest, Gdańsk Bruges, Vancouver, Yosemite, Thailand.

Loved UK - Cornwall, Dorset, Devon, Lake District, East Sussex, Peak District, Edinburgh and Perthshire.

Hated abroad - Gran Canaria, Dublin

Yes! Also love Cornwall .
Going back later in the month for a few days.
The coastline is just beautiful

MAFIL · 07/10/2019 18:11

My best holiday overall was probably Belgium (Flanders to be more specific). Excellent cycling, history and chocolate. I also like Northern Italy. Excellent cycling, history and food in general.
Worst holiday overall without doubt the French Riviera. It was very expensive and I didn't find there was much to do. My single biggest travel disappointment was definitely Niagara Falls. Yes, the falls themselves were impressive but the surroundings reminded me of Blackpool, just a bit less tasteful. I'm told the Canadian side is better but I didn't get to see that aspect. That trip was part of a long holiday that was otherwise excellent, but the day itself was one of those "is that it?" moments and I wouldn't go back.

Sarcelle · 07/10/2019 18:24

Best - New England, New York, Scotland, St Ives (Cornwall), Amalfi Coast

Worse - Malia (Crete), Sharm El Sheik, Turkey, Tenerife

Not bad but boring: Mauritius, Cephalonia

tequilasunrises · 07/10/2019 18:29

Best - Turkey (Kalkan absolutely stunning), Florida, Riviera Maya, Croatia.

Worst - I didn’t really enjoy Goa, but I had just been dumped so wasn’t in the best headspace! Been to Spain where it just rained for a week which was pretty miserable, but we normally have a fab time when the suns out so that’s not Spain’s fault!

I think the weather and who you go with have the biggest impact.

dayslikethese1 · 07/10/2019 18:52

OK so to balance out all the exotic locations I love Cornwall, Lake District and Dorset. New Forrest also very lovely.

Wasn't a big fan of Weymouth but it may not have been Weymouths fault as it was a grim day.

JasBBGG · 07/10/2019 19:40

Best - Garda, Barbados, Jamaica.

To be fair I've had some great times in Tenerife and Lanzarote despite the bashing they are getting here and having avoided them myself for years. When you've got toddlers as long as you get a nice hotel you can't beat it for a bit of sun!

Worst - Egypt, Fueterventura.

Delatron · 07/10/2019 19:50

Best: Oman, Berlin, Yorkshire Dales, Southern Germany (Black Forest)
Worst: Fueterventura, New York ( for far too long with kids, liked it as a couple),Egypt.
Blackpool for UK

Delatron · 07/10/2019 19:58

And I didn’t miss anything in New York. I just got so sick of the rudeness of people and agree with the poster who said it’s basically a shit hole when you get to know it properly. I was so happy to come home.

Wereonabearhunt · 07/10/2019 20:04

Best - Iceland
Worst - New York

Parttimewasteoftime · 07/10/2019 20:05

Egypt is amazing I mean like Wow although the poverty will break your heart and everyone smokes.
We liked Tunisia but it was a long time ago not sure if its changed.
Cornwall is the most beautiful place on earth hands down not well travelled 😂
Turkey is awful scamming and the men are awful. Spent the whole holiday trying to explain to the waiter we didn't want to talk to him for hours everyday just did not feel safe there at all and hate bartering (my issue)

DarlingBuds19 · 07/10/2019 21:39

Worst. Ireland. Awful place. Expensive dirty beaches. Worst wasps ever. Stuck in the 50s

Shock

You clearly didn't visit Northern Ireland or County Donegal. Blue flag all the way up here Wink.

DarlingBuds19 · 07/10/2019 21:43

Camped near this one recently (Ballymastocker bay/Port Salon in Co. Donegal).

Favourite and least favourite holiday you have visited?
DarlingBuds19 · 07/10/2019 21:46

(And they're all free - unless your post was meant to read ".. expensive. Dirty beaches.."..).

The Republic of Ireland can sometimes be a bit time warp-y to be fair, N.I. is usually not.

runninguphills · 07/10/2019 21:54

Best
UK - Snowdon/Beddgelert North Wales
Europe - Chamonix French Alps, Europa Park Germany
Worldwide - N Zealand, Bermuda

Worst
UK - Blackpool
Europe - Benidorm (like Blackpool in Spain)
Worldwide - Thailand (travelled through and felt unsafe here)

user1471462209 · 07/10/2019 21:56

Only place I can think of that I really didn't like is Magaluf. Not massively impressed with NYC either but still enjoyed it.

Pre-kids I loved Thailand (especially Koh Tao), sailing in Greece or BVI although locals are a bit miserable in BVI!

Post kids we have quite enjoyed Lanzarote and Tenerife! any Greek island. I think with those kind of places you just need to be careful where you stay. North Yorkshire coast, Wales or southwest camping all good too. Anywhere really!

LittleSweet · 07/10/2019 22:03

Worst: Greece. I got bitten by every insect and I do not get on with the dirty toilet paper bins.
Best: New York. Amazing food, nice people and loads to see. Loved the architecture.

CakeNinja · 07/10/2019 22:29

Ahh some of you have confirmed my thoughts on the Maldives - definitely not for me as I don’t really enjoy the sea at all, am terrified of sharks and generally the open water fill stop!!
Dp and I were talking about it as a potential destination for my birthday but I had ruled it out after seeing yet another friends pictures of them sitting around for 2 weeks - they said they had a lovely time but I could travel elsewhere and get a whole lot more in the way of experiences alongside a lovely view.
Glad that those of you who have been enjoyed it though, it’s a long way to go to be disappointed!!

Wavyheaded · 07/10/2019 22:32

Best: Split, Croatia, Sitges and Barcelona, New York, Cuba, Cinque Terre, Sorrento & Amalfi, Marrakech, Darjeeling. Also Bath was fabulous!

Worst: Magaluf and Tenerife.

LadyAllegraImelda · 08/10/2019 06:10

Dublin was my most disappointing and Switzerland in the summer was my best (for scenery but the prices meant we had to budget too much).

LadyAllegraImelda · 08/10/2019 06:12

Also the Krka National Park and Plitvice lakes in Northern Croatia were stunning.

ComeOnGordon · 08/10/2019 20:05

I agree about the Plitvice lakes even tho we went on a day where it rained all day. It just made them more dramatic but it took us a while to dry out again 😂 and there are some beautiful towns in Croatia.

But something about Croatia is missing - I think it’s the lack of their own food style. I felt the food was either very touristy or very expensive (for fish that they can catch on their doorstep). I just didn’t get a feel for Croatian food culture and that was even while staying in a less touristy part. Much preferred southern Italy.

Also didn’t love it with small kids - the rocky beaches just werent any fun for them
