it’s one of the poorest regions in Europe.- not just in the Uk. It has received millions in investment, it will be fucked (like the NE and Cornwall) after brexit.
Just had a weekend in Cardiff, where I witnessed Brexit party supporters intimidating a polish couple on the street. I won’t be going again in a hurry. !! I know it was one incident, but i’m Shocked and dismayed 😨.

That's good enough

Abraid2 · 06/10/2019 10:55

Cornwall also voted Brexit as well, I believe.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 06/10/2019 11:02

A lot of people in Wales are very parochial and nationalistic (I am welsh). They have quite a small view of the world. It doesn't surprise me at all. They don't like outsiders.

horse4course · 06/10/2019 11:11

English retirees swung it

Not that much of a mystery tho - Wales has areas of impoverishment and all the papers were blaming the Eu

SuitedandBooted · 06/10/2019 11:51

This is why:

www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/wales-most-pro-brexit-town-15767233

Money not spent in productive, long term projects.

Vanity projects, that are foisted on an area.

Little or no communication with the local community

Look at those unemployment figures, and try telling those people how good the EU has been for them. As a PP said, it's primarly the middle classes who benefit the most from travel, plentiful employees etc.

And yes, people ARE worried about immigration, particularly when there are few jobs to be had. A sudden influx of people is hard to absorb, especially in smaller, more homogeneous communities. And (unpleasant though it may be for some to admit) they are not all hard working, solid EU citizens. I have a relative who lives in a small Valley town. There has been a large increase in Eastern Europeans housed there - shipped out by Councils as rent is cheaper . They don't seem to have found much proper work and in my relative's words, spend their time "Fighting, drinking and pissing in the street".

And no, saying that does not make him a racist. I wouldn't like to see that happen in my area, - would you? But then, like so many of the "shocked" Remainers, I live in a very "naice" South East village, where the ladies-who-lunch like having all the cheap cleaners/plumbers etc.

The Eu experience is not universal.

ExecutiveFiat · 06/10/2019 12:17

Wow Suites. Quite the racist little rant there!! . I was shocked at what I saw in Cardiff.
Seems like perhaps I shouldn’t have been.😕wales has hardly any immigration, particularly rural areas. What a lot of nonsense.

Are you excusing people being abused in the streets because of a misplaced perception that their jobs are being stolen?

OP posts:
Ratcatcher9 · 06/10/2019 12:25

The truth is, I don't think they really knew what they were voting for. They just didn't like johnny foreigner and thought voting leave was the answer.

Butchyrestingface · 06/10/2019 12:28

Did I dream it or was Michael Sheen not threatening to return from Hollywood at the time and run as an MP to sort them all out? Confused

ElizaDee · 06/10/2019 12:29

I witnessed Brexit party supporters intimidating a polish couple on the street

How do you know they were brexit supporters?

Or has brexit supporter become the new term for rascist now?

ExecutiveFiat · 06/10/2019 12:32

Read the thread and you’ll get your answer Eliza.

OP posts:
ExecutiveFiat · 06/10/2019 12:36

Sadly ratcatcher that’s seems to be about the size of it.

OP posts:
upatthesky · 06/10/2019 12:36

I see you didn’t want a genuine answer, OP.

longwayoff · 06/10/2019 12:40

Other way round, Eliza dee

Paintedmaypole · 06/10/2019 12:41

I am astonished that Wales marginally voted leave. Wales had a lot back from the EU, new roads like A55 made a tremendous difference. Objective one money to help with social deprivation, help for farming. West Wales was very much remain. Anglesey is the only area I can think of where English retirees may have had an influence. Many English people who have chosen to live in Wales are in favour of remaining. I think the same factors are at play as in England, people in deprived areas blaming the deprivation on immigration and manipulation by the leave campaign. Sadly it suits the narrative of some Welsh people to blame the English.

Hagbeth · 06/10/2019 12:47

Maybe they voted leave because of the derivation? We’ve been in the EU and what good has it done?

Hagbeth · 06/10/2019 12:48

**depravation

SuitedandBooted · 06/10/2019 12:49

Wow Suites. Quite the racist little rant there!!

How is it racist to point out that not all immigration is positive for the communities that have to absorb it?

Biker47 · 06/10/2019 12:53

It has received millions in investment,

If I demand £14 from you and give you back £7, and tell you how you have to spend it, is that a great deal?

ExecutiveFiat · 06/10/2019 12:54

Hag, how do you think leaving the EU will help with deprivation?

OP posts:
dirtyrottenscoundrel · 06/10/2019 12:55

How is it racist to point out that not all immigration is positive for the communities that have to absorb it?

I’d like to know that too.
The op will have the answer I’m sure.

upatthesky · 06/10/2019 12:55

Op, it has been explained to you.

Suited actually linked to an extremely informative article which didn’t ask people to take one side or the other, it just explained people’s thought processes.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 06/10/2019 12:57

I don't know about wales, but Cornwall (I knkw because my brother lives there) has been pretty much dependent on EU money to regenerate deprived areas for years now. The govt here have never and will never stump up the cash (and spoil their pretty scenery on holiday?) but the EU have consistently supported them.

And they voted leave. It's astonishing.

ExecutiveFiat · 06/10/2019 12:58

Wales is a net beneficiary from EU finding. Do people really think that Westminster is going to plug that gap. That’s incredibly naive!
Same for other poorer parts if the UK.
