Unspeakable

So DS (8) loves this YouTuber.

His friends at school say their parents won't let them watch him. They've also been banned from saying 'flippin' which apparantly is a bad word.

I have watched quite a few unspeakable videos with DS and honestly can't see what's wrong with them. He's obviously older than DS, but he doesn't swear, doesn't break the law, doesn't condone drink or drugs etc..

What's your view? Can I let him watch this guy? And what's wrong with saying 'flippin' ?

(Ps. DS is a really good kid. Well behaved at school, fun, polite. So I don't think he's picked up any bad habbits etc..??)

I think we'd need to see the video before we could comment.

My DS is the same age and LOOOOOOOVES Unspeakable -- they've been fans for over a year now (we had to buy "merch" for Christmas last year!) and I have yet to come across something objectionable.

My other DS's reception teacher mentioned her son watches as well.

That's reassuring gwenneh!! Yes my DS has some merch! Which I thought was fine but now I know some parents disapprove, I'm a bit worries that DS wearing the cap is a walking advert that I'm a crap mum!!!

Smiley but DS doesn't even know and has never heard the word f*!k! Is 'flippin' always a substitute for that anyway? I personally think saying it is fine. But maybe your comments explain why some of the mum's don't like it!

Eh, if allowing the kids to have limited, supervised viewing of an extraordinarily tame Minecraft fan YouTuber makes me a crap mum then so be it, I'll join that parade. :D

My DS of a similar age watches him as well and like your DS doesn't seem to have picked up any bad habits. He is one of the YTers I least like him watching (prefer DanTDM, annoying as he is he's very child-friendly, and there are a couple of other English ones who are a bit lower energy/less annoying) but he's not banned.

Oh you want a link to a video! ...mmmm....am I allowed to do that? I've had a few run-ins with the mumsnet team recently and don't want to do anything wrong. If someone can reassure me, I'll post a link to a clip or two (warning, they are a bit long and a bit dull if you are not 8 years old!!!)

My Dc both love Unspeakable, DanTDM and Preston. I’ve not seen anything inappropriate for an eight year old in any of their videos.

Good grief if some parents have time or energy to have issues with the word flippin then good for them. Moreover good luck to them when their kids become adults. I'm glad to not be a parent like them. I'd be traumatised. And so would my kids.

My 8yo watches Unspeakable a lot too (Minecraft Youtuber). He often puts it on the main TV and I haven't noticed anything I'd find amiss.

He has drifted onto other videos where the more dubious word pops up occasionally. He knows swearing exists. He knows it's strong language that should not be used regularly, and it's not our regular vocabulary, nor his. Our influence is stronger at this stage than the odd slip on a youtube video.

Flippin' wouldn't bother me!

The thing I would worry about is where the clicks will lead him. My dd is 8 and I don't let her watch youtube. She wanted a Chromebook for her birthday to do her homework on. We bought it and dh showed her the 'mentos in diet coke' reaction on youtube. She clicked similar videos and initially we thought nothing of it. Then she took her Chromebook upstairs and shut the lid down really quickly when I went in. She'd found a video called 'how to sneak make up into class' and was watching it secretively as she knew I'd disapprove. What scared me was how quickly she went from watching things her dad had shown her to things I didn't know existed. No more YouTube.

My eldest loves Unspeakable, I've watched videos with him and it's been basically harmless and he's even learned a bit about coding and designing stuff on minecraft. There's far worse out there.

Thank you for not saying that!!! I thought unspeakable was fine and genuinely couldn't see anything wrong with it! But thought maybe I'd missed something! Still not sure why there's a group of disapproving mum's!

We started with Stampy, then graduated to Dan TDM (who seems to have had a bit of a resurgence these days) and for the last year or so they've been glued to Unspeakable. The channel I like the least are the Sharers, they're a bit unusual and not really game related.

I'm currently being subjected to an unspeakable video, he's building a boat of lego and jumping around with his mates shouting flip! My ds is obsessed and I've spent a fortune on "merch", I see nothing inappropriate for children there, he's basically an overgrown child himself! If that makes me a shit parent so be it.

There ought to be "merch" for the mums who have to endure the videos.

Nah, my 9 year old and 11 year old watch Unspeakable and it seems fine.

My 7 year old watches Preston plays and un speakable. I don't let him say what the flip or flippin as he thinks that's the f word kids at school say they know about so he says what the pump (I don't let him say fart at home, so he can say it elsewhere and think he's being rebellious )

My dc watch Unspeakable sometimes and also Collins Key. I do limit their time and supervise as much as possible. I do see anything wrong with Unspeakable.

I stopped my DC9 watching unspeakable after a while. Episode where they did a gift gamble did it for me...he wrapped two gifts and his GF had to choose one to keep and one to smash with a hammer.
Ended up smashing a TV, an iPhone, etc.

What on earth is wrong with 'flippin' - much better than that other disgusting word beginning with 'f'.

My 6 year old says flippin' never seen it as a problem at all!
