Argument with DH over oats

SummerInSun · 03/10/2019 23:01

To save time (maybe 30 seconds?!) tomorrow morning, I've just measured out the oats for tomorrow's porridge into a saucepan and left them ready on the stove. In the morning I'll get the milk out of the fridge, add it, and cook the porridge.

DH has just come into the kitchen and said that the oats will go stale overnight and put a lid on the saucepan. I think he is insane and oats can't possibly go stale in ten hours. He thinks it's obvious that oats left not in an airtight container will suffer a major quality deterioration and doesn't see why I wouldn't have automatically put a lid on.

What's the Mumsnet verdict?!

I'd have put a lid on too. (Sorry!) Grin

DracarysThis · 03/10/2019 23:04

I do stuff like this, usually I put my cereal in a bowl, tea in the pot and have all my utensils set out the night before.

nocoolnamesleft · 03/10/2019 23:04

That's a relief. Not wild oats you're quarrelling over.

Veterinari · 03/10/2019 23:05

He’s bonkers

RoLaren · 03/10/2019 23:05

I would cover it due to beasties running over it in the night. Just a plate or something.

enjoyingscience · 03/10/2019 23:05

They won’t go stale, but there’s so many spiders on the loose in my house I’d probably put a lid on just to keep the protein content down.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 03/10/2019 23:05

I'd also be putting a lid on them.

MsVestibule · 03/10/2019 23:05

I'd have put a lid on it too!

EskewedBeef · 03/10/2019 23:05

I'd have put the lid on too. I wouldn't leave any food uncovered.

Newmumma83 · 03/10/2019 23:06

No idea but would prob put a lid on to make him happy and think he was nuts on the end inside

SamBeckett · 03/10/2019 23:06

They will not go stale IMO but with the size of the spiders ( which I like ) in my house ATM I think all the oats would be eaten by the morning

MRS2004 · 03/10/2019 23:06

No way, they do not go stale, I do this all the time!

CassandraCross · 03/10/2019 23:07

I'd have put a lid on not because I think they'll go stale but just to prevent any flies or other creepy crawly things deciding to bed down in the oats for the night.

It's not something I would start or have an argument about though.

Iggi999 · 03/10/2019 23:07

As the song says - If you like it you shoulda put a lid on it

Plexie · 03/10/2019 23:07

No idea but I think it's hilarious! As the oats are to be cooked I don't think it will affect the quality. In fact, if they absorb some moisture from the air overnight it might take slightly less energy to cook them.

Actually, isn't the traditional Scottish way of cooking porridge to leave the oats soaking in salted water overnight?

22Giraffes · 03/10/2019 23:08

I would put a lid on too, sorry op!

SamBeckett · 03/10/2019 23:11

LOL it seems that lots of us have spiders charging around at the minuet.
I like raisins in my porridge, a boiled spider would not be a nice surprise

LellyMcKelly · 03/10/2019 23:11

Yeah, I’d put a lid on too. It’s spider season.

SilverChime · 03/10/2019 23:13

I’d put the milk in and leave it to soak overnight.

WineIsMyCarb · 03/10/2019 23:16

Arguing about oats isn't too serious, but once you're bickering about boats, coats and moats then you're in LTB territory.
Enjoy your porridge!

Teddybear45 · 03/10/2019 23:17

I would never leave anything out overnight uncovered.

CassandraCross · 03/10/2019 23:18

SilverChime I would too makes cooking it even quicker in the morning.

TottieandMarchpane · 03/10/2019 23:18

Never mind stale. Worry about insects.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 03/10/2019 23:19

I'd cover it too, but that's because of the crazy fruit fly infestation we have at the moment (query: why aren't the equally huge numbers of spiders eating them?)

But I don't think the oats will dry out overnight, no. And we don't keep ours in an airtight container come to that, they just stay in the box with the wee cardboard flap open.

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 03/10/2019 23:21

Mine proceed at a stately gavotte.
