Argument with DH over oats

SummerInSun · 03/10/2019 23:01

To save time (maybe 30 seconds?!) tomorrow morning, I've just measured out the oats for tomorrow's porridge into a saucepan and left them ready on the stove. In the morning I'll get the milk out of the fridge, add it, and cook the porridge.

DH has just come into the kitchen and said that the oats will go stale overnight and put a lid on the saucepan. I think he is insane and oats can't possibly go stale in ten hours. He thinks it's obvious that oats left not in an airtight container will suffer a major quality deterioration and doesn't see why I wouldn't have automatically put a lid on.

What's the Mumsnet verdict?!

Were you really bored this evening? I can understand soaking oats overnight to save time, but putting oats in a pan Hmm

Ladiva1971 · 04/10/2019 03:38

Wow some people cant even afford oats...…………….to save time buy the oats in pots 1 min in microwave

Ladiva1971 · 04/10/2019 03:41

Or get up 30 seconds earlier :D

IncrediblySadToo · 04/10/2019 04:11

I I’m eating Keto, I’d love oats, I would wouldnt even mind if the spiders had rubbed their willies on them, as long as they d got out of the pan & back in their hidey hole again

I’d have put a lid on, not for staleness, but in case of creepy visitors.

Esspee · 04/10/2019 04:20

In this house the oats are soaked in milk overnight in an open bowl on the worktop, so not refrigerated. Shock horror! (So far my OH has survived.)
I prefer muesli and mine is soaked in milk/yoghurt and left overnight in the fridge. (Because I wouldn't be able to spot the spiders among the delicious fruit and nuts)

cantfindname · 04/10/2019 04:25

I soak mine in plain water overnight so they cook a bit faster. No problem at all and they never taste 'stale'

Using a lid due to the infestation of bloody crane flies because daughter left bathroom light on and window open! Aaargh.

Aprillygirl · 04/10/2019 04:30

They won’t go stale, but it’s basic hygiene to cover left out food, especially in spider/fly season.

YobaOljazUwaque · 04/10/2019 05:00

Yes to lid - basic hygiene not to leave food out uncovered.

Now I want porridge for breakfast.

LaganBubbleCruises · 04/10/2019 06:04

Should you keep the kitchen light on all night to stop them being darked on?

TheRattleBag · 04/10/2019 06:10

This thread definitely needs a trigger warning for spiders!

FreshwaterBay · 04/10/2019 06:15

DH could have his porridge before going to bed, that would solve the problem. In the morning he could have a bowl of cereal or something.

SunshineCake · 04/10/2019 06:48

The lid would go on so flies, cats, etc can't stick their faces in it. Plus, I think they would go stale. Just measure a small amount in a pot and leave out to test the theory. Obviously.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 04/10/2019 06:51

Unless you like your oats seasoned with spiders rather than raisins I'd cover them.

daisypond · 04/10/2019 06:52

I’d put a lid on. You don’t want a mice infestation.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 04/10/2019 06:55

I would probably cover not have thought to cover it (no, they wont go stake lol!) But would have realised my mistake when I found cat fluff/spiders in it

MerryMarigold · 04/10/2019 06:59

Grin at the spider Willie's. Yes, I agree with putting a lid on it, but this is nectar I cook them with a lid on too (cook quicker and on lower heat).

What is your issue with lids? Maybe this is the heart of the argument.

SummerInSun · 04/10/2019 07:00

Thanks all! Will report to DH (over our breakfast of spider-free and fly-free porridge) that he had the right idea for the wrong reason! Pleased to report that the lid is still on, so no giant spiders staged an attack on the pan in the night...

Onemorecrisp · 04/10/2019 07:01

YABU not soaking in milk hardly a time saver just measuring out!

MerryMarigold · 04/10/2019 07:02

Ps. I don't cook spider willies, which it does look like above (bad grammar and phone spelling). I do cook oats about every 3 days. I recommend cooking them in Koko milk. Delish.

henchmen33 · 04/10/2019 07:04

@IGGI999 Exactly how the song should go 😂

AgentJohnson · 04/10/2019 07:10

Why don’t you leave a cup in the oats container so you can measure the amount quickly. Leaving it in a saucepan uncovered isn’t the smartest plan. However, I don’t think it will effect the taste or quality of the end product but cornflakes or any other item where you’d wish to retain crispness, would be effected.

beela · 04/10/2019 07:10

I really want porridge now but I don't think I've got time to measure out the oats.

HearMeSnore · 04/10/2019 07:16

This made me smile because it's the kind of thing DH and I squabble over. We never argue about "big" things. Like money or how to raise DD. It's stuff like whether you should fill the kettle by opening the lid, or through the spout.

Afterwards I always wonder where we find the energy to disagree over these things...

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/10/2019 07:23

To the pp who put the spider pic on I hope to God that wasnt a door frame it was on.Bloody huge!

Loveislandaddict · 04/10/2019 07:30

My cereal packet isn’t sealed, so I don’t think they will go off.
Also microwave oats.
