Argument with DH over oats

To save time (maybe 30 seconds?!) tomorrow morning, I've just measured out the oats for tomorrow's porridge into a saucepan and left them ready on the stove. In the morning I'll get the milk out of the fridge, add it, and cook the porridge.

DH has just come into the kitchen and said that the oats will go stale overnight and put a lid on the saucepan. I think he is insane and oats can't possibly go stale in ten hours. He thinks it's obvious that oats left not in an airtight container will suffer a major quality deterioration and doesn't see why I wouldn't have automatically put a lid on.

What's the Mumsnet verdict?!

Two words: RICE WEEVILS

I recommend the lid

cakeandchampagne · 04/10/2019 00:03

Lid- but because of spiders/insects/mice.

Rachelover60 · 04/10/2019 00:06

I would have put a lid on too. However (having broken my reading glasses), I originally thought the title of this thread was:
Argument with DH over cats !

Then reading the opening post I was wondering how cats can go stale overnight. After that I got it. Was funny though. At the time, not so funny me re-telling.

Yes, lid on is a good idea - not just to stop porridge drying out but to keep any insects at bay, It's amazing how often little fruit flies buzz around the kitchen, virtually unseen. In addition, having the lid on will protect it from the cats.......

After all this I fancy some porridge right now.

GabsAlot · 04/10/2019 00:06

ive got a fruit fly aswell is it the season?

Dedinnitely a lid just for insects

SaskiaRembrandt · 04/10/2019 00:09

tunnocksreturns2019 that spider looks remarkably like our Tarquin - he disappeared from here two days ago, has he taken up residence with you?

OP, definitely put a lid on your oats, you don't want to eat breakfast that has had beasties hiking through it.

SamBeckett · 04/10/2019 00:14

@RightYesButNo Woah there ! you mean things can get darked on when they are in the house ? does this mean I have to leave all my lights on all the time now ? ( its like Blackpool illuminations round here ( thank you DM )

TheSilveryPussycat · 04/10/2019 00:15

IME porridge pans are one of the easiest to clean. Put cold water in, as high as the stuck on porridge in the pan. Leave for a while. Porridge should then be easy to scoop out in a more or less solid lump. Then pan is almost clean, though will still need to be washed.

TheSilveryPussycat · 04/10/2019 00:17

Leave for a while. Drain.*

pigsDOfly · 04/10/2019 00:27

I'd definitely put a lid on.

We seem to be in the throes of a daddy long legs plague at the moment where I live and sometimes they get into the house. I'd hate to think of those skinny little feet crawling all over my oats all night.

RightYesButNo · 04/10/2019 00:29

I believe the rule of thumb is that the only things that can be darked on, in or out doors, are things about which someone says, “Are you leaving that/those out?” incredulously. Apparently, oats are one of those things in OP’s household, so they’re getting darked on. I don’t think they’d be darked on in my house, due to the law I’ve just stated, as no one would say shite about them. Grin

Monday55 · 04/10/2019 00:31

Put the lid on! & microwaving oats will save you more time.

notangelinajolie · 04/10/2019 00:36

I'd have put a lid on but that's because we have a cat.

kateandme · 04/10/2019 00:44

i love the forward planning feeelig when you come in and save so much time(seconds)having laid things out the night before. there is too much satisfaction that

Seeingadistance · 04/10/2019 00:54

Lid in case of creepy crawlies or mice.

SamBeckett · 04/10/2019 00:59

@RightYesButNo Phew than goodness for that , I would rather not have fruit flies wandering on my food but spiders meh not that worried about TBH

Wingedharpy · 04/10/2019 01:06

Another one here who makes porridge in the microwave in the bowl that I eat it from.
Cooks quicker and no gloopy pan to wash.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 04/10/2019 01:12

I’ve read oats so many times, I now want a bowl. But I don’t even like oats! Confused

Mummaofmytribe · 04/10/2019 01:35

Lid! Spider poo!

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 04/10/2019 01:36

Lid! Spider poo!

Nope! It’s ok! I’m back to not liking oats! 🕷🥣🤢

BrendasUmbrella · 04/10/2019 01:56

I either put the milk and oats in a bowl overnight and zap it in the microwave in the morning, or do I cold overnight oats - so same thing but just add other toppings in the morning and eat cold.

I don't really see how setting out dry oats is going to save you any more then 5 seconds in the morning though. Plus the spider thing. Don't risk it!

flyingspaghettimonster · 04/10/2019 02:03

I wouldn't eat anything left uncovered overnight.

DustyMaiden · 04/10/2019 02:19

Put the milk in as well and put it in the fridge.

BobbyGentry · 04/10/2019 02:43

Lid on

You’re in danger of having the oats mumsnettedly darked on and spiders willied 🕷 🕷 🌑 🕷🕷 do it if you dare! Store oats in microwave then cook first thing.

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 04/10/2019 02:47

Good grief, I hope you are charging that large cohabiting spider bloody rent, it's the size of a donkey!

Topseyt · 04/10/2019 03:02

Lid on. To keep insects off.
