DP putting cheese on every single meal I make!

Chembe · 03/10/2019 17:47

I really like to cook. I spend probably at least an hour every night making something for tea.

Maybe I'm just over reacting, but my dp puts grated cheddar or double gloucester (depending what's in the house) on every single meal I make. The only exception is curry...

Now I understand that a bit of grated cheese is nice on some things, fajitas, spag bol maybe but I've made two cheesy pasta dishes this week and he's put cheese on them too and it's just really got on my nerves! First was macaroni then tonight I made a tomato and mascarpone sauce, which he said tasted lovely, then takes a couple handfuls of cheese to put on top. Every dinner time he stands and grates cheese to put on the table. ! We've been together 7.5 years so this isn't new but I just want to know if I'm being unreasonable in finding it so frustrating. I find it quite offensive to be honest that none of my meals are palatable without a handful of grated cheese! Sad This turned into a bit of a womble Blush

That’s not weird at all. I always put cheese in pasta. Doesn’t matter what the sauce is.

AloeVeraLynn · 03/10/2019 17:57

It's his food for heavens sake. He obviously likes cheese so just let him crack on. My dad puts hot pepper sauce on everything and I mean everything. He's perfectly entitled to adjust it to his taste.

chipsandpeas · 03/10/2019 17:57

theres never such a thing as too much cheese

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 03/10/2019 17:58

What’s the issue?

His an adult, if he likes cheese, wants to put cheese on his meal why can’t he? It’s his food he can add what the hell he likes to it

Also you can never have too much cheese 🧀

You really don’t need a mumsnet post with your sad face about this

LolaSmiles · 03/10/2019 17:58

Why wouldn't meals have cheese added to them? Many things are great with cheese.

Does he do it for Sunday lunch/ Chinese / foods that don't logically go with cheese?

I think you're making the mistake of taking it as a personal criticism

AngusThermopyle · 03/10/2019 17:59

Sorry but yep I'm with dp, you can never have enough cheese.

YouLikeTheBadOnesToo · 03/10/2019 18:00

There’s no such thing as too much cheese Grin
I really wouldn’t get upset about this. It’s not a comment on your cooking, it’s just his personal preference, like adding sugar to your coffee or salt on your chips.

For what it’s worth, macaroni cheese with grated cheddar on top is my ultimate comfort food.

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 03/10/2019 18:00

Yabu you can never have enough cheese

LaurieMarlow · 03/10/2019 18:00

Totally legit to put cheese on the dishes You mentioned.

YABU.

Totally.

Sorry.

justjuggling · 03/10/2019 18:01

Everything is better topped with grated cheese, especially any kind of pasta dish!! Haven't tried it on curry but am now definitely going to!!

Nottheduchess · 03/10/2019 18:02

Hi, my name is Nottheduchess and I too am a cheesaholic. It is no criticism of your food but just the need for a cheese dish with a side of extra cheese. Is it the cost of the cheese? Or is he very obese? If no then you should just let him be and gorge himself on the delicious milky cheesy cheseness that is cheese, all hail cheese

WhatTiggersDoBest · 03/10/2019 18:02

YABU. He's not trying to say he doesn't like your food.
Would you be this upset if he put black pepper on everything?? Confused

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 03/10/2019 18:07

Well now I want cheese...

Wombleish · 03/10/2019 18:08

'A bit of a womble'? Are you taking my name in vain OP? Grin

Redglitter · 03/10/2019 18:10

I dont understand the concept of too much cheese. It's up there with left over wine

Chembe · 03/10/2019 18:11

Okay, I'm totally unreasonable! Point taken Grin I showed DP the post and he is feeling quite chuffed. For the record I've never stopped him having cheese and I don't moan about it.. to his face anyway. I shall stop taking offence!

InsertFunnyUsername · 03/10/2019 18:12

My GD used to smother all his food cooked by GM in Brown sauce because she was an awful cook...

So I can see why you think that Grin

Stayinin · 03/10/2019 18:18

Is the issue that you have spent time and effort creating the perfect dish and then he 'adds' to it without realising you had the flavours already perfectly balanced? If so my DH does this. We've had words. He also adds bread and butter to EVERY meal whether it goes or not. I feel your pain OP.

SherbetSaucer · 03/10/2019 18:19

It’s loaded with saturated fat and hormones, not good to OD on the stuff!!

MrsTWH · 03/10/2019 18:21

Sorry but YABU. Cheese is delicious and he is an adult. I’m sure it’s no reflection on your cooking.

Plus, he should try adding it to curry as it’s a revelation!

Jaliqop · 03/10/2019 18:25

He is bu for not putting cheese on curry, so good! Grin

FineWordsForAPorcupine · 03/10/2019 18:27

I know what you mean OP - it's the thoughtless habit of it that would make me feel annoyed.

It really bothers me when people add salt without tasting their food - how do they know how much to add?

I suppose I associate it with school dinners - there seemed to be a phase where everyone started adding salt and pepper to seem "grown up". As a result I always find it a bit childish :)

ImportantWater · 03/10/2019 18:29

Does he put cheese on a roast dinner? A casserole? Toad in the hole? I would find cheese on those kind of dinners pretty weird.

inthekitchensink · 03/10/2019 18:29

I love to cook too, and spend a lot of time & thought & effort on our meals. If he grated some cheese to smother on any meal I made (other than spaghetti or jacket potato) I would not cook for him again. It’s rude, changes the tone of the dish & is so childish. Much like adding ketchup or smothering in hot sauce or seasoning. But I am part French and we take our meals seriously!

MagdalenNoName · 03/10/2019 18:33

Mainly I think it's a daft thing to do - a way of making everything taste the same.

If someone is underweight and trying to gain a few pounds, then it makes sense. Or if somebody has been doing hard manual work so needs more calories than the cook who's been doing something sedentary.

Cheese tastes better at the end of a meal - with crackers, grapes, celery. Then you can enjoy it properly.
