It seems very out of character for Harry? Confused I wonder if he misinterpreted and thought she was asking about the lawsuit...

Yes the hair thing Meghan and Kate do is incredibly annoying.

LaurieMarlow · 04/10/2019 12:12

The real problems in South Africa weren’t even touched on, by either of them

Well of course they weren’t. They never are on royal visits. There would be outrage if she’d done anything differently.

The royals are always bland as fuck in these situations. Causing controversy is the last thing they want.

morningcoffee22 · 04/10/2019 12:17

In S Africa she identified as a woman of colour, in the US and the U.K. as white Caucasian.

BertrandRussell · 04/10/2019 12:21

“in the US and the U.K. as white Caucasian”
No she doesn’t.

I’m looking forward to William and Kate addressing the real issues in Pakistan, India and Kashmir next week.

Pitterpatterpettysteps · 04/10/2019 12:24

Didn’t she describe herself as Caucasian in her resume?

BertrandRussell · 04/10/2019 12:26

No. She said she could play Caucasian. Rather a different thing.

LaurieMarlow · 04/10/2019 12:27

She may have stayed her suitability for playing Caucasian roles on her resume, but that is absolutely, categorically not the same as identifying as Caucasian.

The barrel scraping on here Confused

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 04/10/2019 12:36

Who really knows how she identifies in her heart of hearts? She's saying the right things, and actively promoting the interests of black women which can only be a good thing.

My impression is that she might be a lot nicer as a patron than an employer but even that is speculation.

BubblesBuddy · 04/10/2019 12:38

The Government of the UK paid for their trip to SA. The last couple of days were clouded by their court action and Harry's statement. They are not the first Royals to bring a court action and it will probably succeed as its about copyright. Her letter belonged to her as she wrote it; in copyright terms.

The wider problem they have is not accepting any criticism. Some of it is way over the top but they have accepted public money to renovate their house (£2.5 million), they fly in private jets whilst saying they care for the planet and warning others, and they cannot open car doors! No info about Archie's god parents and various other press bans have put the press into attack mode because We Are Paying For Them! It all seems very entitled without understanding the public will want certain information about them, and have a view on their habits, if they pay out money for them.

She is no Michelle Obama. She wants to be. She is wanting a Royal platform for what she wants to say. Hardly any celeb says anything worthwhile. It's generally scripted and bland and hand wringing (Charles has this off to a tee). It should be more about actions but she won't do much. The second son of the royal family always has problems. Look at Andrew. What has he achieved?

This published statement from Harry was posted without any input from his advisers. They have made that clear. The Palace is angry it was posted before the end of the tour with no consultation. No one was involved with this. They have moved from the normal Royal Solicitiors who handle court cases on newspaper complaints, eg Kate in South of France topless pix etc. to their own solicitors. This is H&M striking out on their own. She does keep losing staff and is probably difficult to handle in a Royal way. We will see how long the latest appointment lasts regarding their PR. Not long if she is not consulted I guess.

LaurieMarlow · 04/10/2019 12:46

Apart from Archie’s godparents, which was probably at the request of the individuals concerned, that is all perfectly standard royal behaviour.

You don’t think you’d get annoyed at constant criticism directed at you, but not other royals?

BertrandRussell · 04/10/2019 12:56

Someone explained about he car doors on another thread- apparently it’s something to do with security- that’s why Meghan was asked not to do it. And the house renovation was a drop in the ocean compared to the Cambridges. And did not involve repainting 3 times to get the colour right and moving the tennis court a foot to the left.....!

BubblesBuddy · 04/10/2019 13:04

It might be a drop in the ocean, but it wasn't their money. This is why it sits badly with some sections of the press. It was a huge amount of money for renovations. No, it is not standard Royal behaviour for someone of Harry's rank regarding God Parents. It was unusal.

Like many Royals, they want to be royal when it suits them and private when they feel like it but using arbitrary occasions to demonstrate that. If you take money, you have to play by certain rules. Or maybe the press should not cover them at all? That is probably the best solution. I rarely read about them: I don't buy the Mail on Sunday or other rubbish newspapers. Clearly, many on the royal threads here do. So stop buying them.

LaurieMarlow · 04/10/2019 13:06

Compared to the 4 mill spent by the Cambridge’s?

BertrandRussell · 04/10/2019 13:07

“It might be a drop in the ocean, but it wasn't their money. This is why it sits badly with some sections of the press. It was a huge amount of money for renovations.“
I agree. But much much less than the Cambridges spent. And nobody’s pillorying them.
And yes it is standard to reveal the names of the godparents- but what if the godparents didn’t want to be made public?

BertrandRussell · 04/10/2019 13:09

“Like many Royals, they want to be royal when it suits them and private when they feel like it but using arbitrary occasions to demonstrate that.”
It’s not arbitrary. It has solely been around their child. Surely that’s OK?

CarolDanvers · 04/10/2019 13:18

I think the reporter was being quite sneery actually, kind of scoffing at what was THAT convo going to achieve here and was looking for a reaction. I think Harry is used to being popular and despite claiming he has huge experience with the horrible press I don't think he actually does, not directly anyway. I wasn't keen on Meghan to begin with but I think she's been attacked so viciously and so repeatedly yet still stayed so smiley and gracious that I now feel really sorry for her and have grown rather fond of her. I think this legal action is a mistake and will make things much worse sadly.

angell84 · 04/10/2019 13:31

@morningcoffee22 when has she ever described herself as Caucasian?

I have always heard her referring to herself as "mixed race", or a woman of colour.

I have to say, I thank God that I am not black sometimes. I really would not be able for the amount of abuse and harassment aimed at me.

angell84 · 04/10/2019 13:34

Lets just say it-

The public prefer Kate because she is white and English.

Pitterpatterpettysteps · 04/10/2019 13:34

But much much less than the Cambridges spent.

As a future king, William is in a completely different category.

LaurieMarlow · 04/10/2019 13:38

As a future king, William is in a completely different category.

And H&M are working royals. A small select group with a specific role to support the monarch. As such, they’re on the payroll too.

And they didn’t spend anywhere near as much as the Cambridge’s.

Pitterpatterpettysteps · 04/10/2019 13:39

Harry is like Andrew to William’s Charles. People would never expect Andrew to spend as much from the public purse as Charles, so why draw such comparisons between Harry and William?

LaurieMarlow · 04/10/2019 13:40

Also, there’s none if this ‘Wills is in a completely different category’ when it comes to access to, photographs of and behaviour around the children.

God help H&M if they don’t do exactly the same as the Cambridge’s.

No degrees then.

Funny.

LaurieMarlow · 04/10/2019 13:40

LaurieMarlow · 04/10/2019 13:42

The sussexes spent 62% of what the Cambridge’s spend on renovations. For clarity.

MissEliza · 04/10/2019 13:43

Harry's not the first royal to have got ratty with the press. Does anyone remember the press conference on the ski slopes when Charles got annoyed at a question about Camilla? But he just muttered under his breath and the subject was quite sensitive at that point. Harry was condescending and rude about what seems to me a valid question. That particular report usually covers him and Meghan in a positive light so I can't imagine why he'd be so ratty with her.
Even before he got married, his changed demeanour with the media was noted by those used to covering the royal family, like Arthur Edwards.
