It seems very out of character for Harry? Confused I wonder if he misinterpreted and thought she was asking about the lawsuit...

I really wasn't inferring anything

Or implying Wink

VladmirsPoutine · 08/10/2019 13:23

Perhaps a question better suited to Pedant's corner, but now we're here... what's the difference between 'inferring' and 'implying'? I use the terms interchangeably but there must be some nuance behind the terms which isn't very obvious to me.

Imply = speaker's intention
Infer = listener's interpretation

BertrandRussell · 08/10/2019 13:27

The person saying it implies. The person listening infers.
When my ds was younger he accused me of something- I can’t remember what - and I shouted “That’s NOT what I said!!” and he shouted back “Well it’s what I inferred!”

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 08/10/2019 13:27

Well, imply is what you do when you are saying something indirectly.

Inferring is what the other person picks up from what you say.

Someone else will definitely explain it better!Grin

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 08/10/2019 13:33

As an example I might say we are all spending too much time on this thread.

You might say, "are you implying we have better things to do?"

I might reply "I infer from what you say that you don't agree!"

VladmirsPoutine · 08/10/2019 14:04

@Myimaginarycathasfleas Grin, forgive my inference in that case. I think I gather it now. Every day is a school day and all that...

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 08/10/2019 23:39

Please don't say I killed the thread on a grammatical point!

Dongdingdong · 09/10/2019 00:06

“Camilla is fairly well connected. I just googled her, and she is the daughter of a Major and granddaughter of a Baronet, as well as being a great granddaughter of a former mistress of King Edward VII

Runs in the family then.

RueCambon · 09/10/2019 00:12

Camilla's surname before she married Andrew PB was Shand Kydd and Diana's mother's surname before she married was also Shand Confused

RueCambon · 09/10/2019 00:13

No, not shand kydd, just Shand.

Rhubarbisevil · 09/10/2019 06:34

Princess Diana’s mother married Peter Shand Kydd. He was half-brother to champion amateur jockey William Shand Kydd who was the husband of Christina Muriel Duncan, sister of Veronica Bingham, Countess of Lucan. They (Bill and Chris) looked after the children after Lord Lucan disappeared.

RueCambon · 09/10/2019 08:52

Was he any relation to Bruce Shand though!? (Camilla's father)

BertrandRussell · 09/10/2019 09:20

Bruce Shand sounds like the leader of a 1970s ceilidh band.....

Pitterpatterpettysteps · 10/10/2019 19:37

Could Tatler be implying that MM is new non-U?

www.tatler.com/article/nancy-mitford-u-and-non-u-language

TottieandMarchpane · 10/10/2019 19:52

Because they deem Soho Farmhouse and talking about yourself to be “non-U”? Oh and “make up outside of London”? Confused

Quite honestly if that bilge is a pop at MM, I’m going to have to pick a side and it will have to be Meghan’s.

So let’s hope not Grin

QualCheckBot · 10/10/2019 20:09

Has there every been anything less U than wearing stiletto heels to a polo match?

RueCambon · 10/10/2019 20:22

Nobody sane is claiming to be "U" 🤣
Meghan not living in fear of being unmasked as non-U rooney vardy style

RueCambon · 10/10/2019 20:24

I realise now that when i say "just give me a normal glass" when i order a g&t, i was confusing tatler with my U behavior. I had make-up on though so phew. Plus and a minus = nonU

Pitterpatterpettysteps · 10/10/2019 20:27

Because they deem Soho Farmhouse and talking about yourself to be “non-U”? Oh and “make up outside of London”?

Hmm... there's also Windsor, Air fresheners and ahem...social climbing...

derxa · 10/10/2019 20:32

Bruce Shand sounds like the leader of a 1970s ceilidh band....

That would be Jimmy Shand

I'm old enough to remember The White Heather Club Grin
TottieandMarchpane · 10/10/2019 20:37

Oh. I missed “air fresheners”. Hmm. I really am conflicted now Sad

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/10/2019 22:04

I can't get past Astrology being 'U'.

QualCheckBot · 10/10/2019 22:56

I can't get past Astrology being 'U'.

Times have changed. No longer do our aristos get muddy in the countryside, they hang around the streets and occupy their time appropriately.

cf Prince Harry's "caring, sharing" jumping on the bandwagon. He's got MH concerns (I don't mock those), he can't get out of bed sometimes, he's ginger, his wife gets bullied, he gets bullied by the Press - he's a walking, talking contradictory victim.

RoseQuartzGlow · 10/10/2019 23:00

The trouble is I don’t think poor Harry really knows who he is or what he’s supposed to be doing. I wonder how much Charles tries to guide him. I suspect Charles is too busy being self obsessed to think about his sons much. Harry needs guidance although he probably wouldn’t accept it anyway. I feel sad for him.
