To mourn MN as it was in the Moulden Days

GregoriaTheGreat · 02/10/2019 21:59

Admittedly, it was not perfect (full of quiches and Queen Bees). So much so that I gave it a rest for a considerable while. I may even have Flounced at some point (though was not a Mouldie. I would never have been cool enough).

But I now mourn the Olden Days when nobody had to bother with "lighthearted" when a thread was evidently lighthearted. Nobody took everything quite so seriously, even when they would have good reason to.

Posters generally had a decent command of spelling and grammar, too.

Maybe I'm just old and need to take up knitting or something.

It feels odd that there are so many MNHQ people now, it's different names all the time. I'm sure all the new ones are very nice, but you knew where you were with Olivia and Helen!

mathanxiety · 04/10/2019 03:43

Stratters is another one who I liked and maryz. Think people nc more often now.

They were booted out Sad.

Lovely posters both. Huge loss.

gingersausage · 04/10/2019 05:41

@BIWI, no I’m not from “The Other Place” as you so euphemistically put it, although I’m reasonably active on makeup and unexplained mystery subs. There is more to Reddit you know 🙄.

TheCanterburyWhales · 04/10/2019 06:28

As far as I know (though my trolls of ye olden days mental list might not be completely correct) Zombie went to "save" TDWP not WWC. Whilst Rhubarb and some character called Bob? Nob? manned the phones and negotiated with HQ.
Probably the weirdest night ever on here, not least because of HQ getting involved and the subterfuge and hoodwinking going on behind the scenes.

bengalcat · 04/10/2019 06:35

Many threads used to be full of wit and humour which is less evident now .

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 04/10/2019 06:40

I think you sum it up beautifully bengalcat.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/10/2019 06:42

It's the poor SPAG, the text speak and the "hun"/"babe" that puts me off now.

And not just the poor SPAG but the fact that everyone defends it. When did poor literacy become a protected characteristic?

LumpySpacedPrincess · 04/10/2019 06:50

Came for the babies stayed for the feminism.

Name changed many, many times. The site has changed but it's still wonderful, I'm thinking feminism and pokemon threads but may be a tad biased.

Everything changes, tis life.

TheCanterburyWhales · 04/10/2019 06:57

Nobody defends poor SPaG.
We defend the right of posters whose SPaG might not be perfect to be able to post on a mammy forum (they aren't, after all, submitting a doctoral thesis for our perusal) without some smug twats pointing out their errors and then going over to PC and copying and pasting it for them to all laugh at.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 04/10/2019 07:02

When did poor literacy become a protected characteristic?

If you don't see the correlation between literacy levels and some things that are protected characteristics then you're not as bright as you evidently think you are.

NoSauce · 04/10/2019 07:06

One thing I have noticed is that posters don’t mind those correcting poor SPAG if the poster is a bit of a twat. Nothing gets said about it. Which I always find hypocritical.

You either don’t agree with correcting people or you do.

NoSauce · 04/10/2019 07:10

It must be boring for MNHQ too now. Years ago the many Helen’s and Olivia were always chatting and popping in on threads, now it’s very rare you see a mod apart from when they’re saying that the “OP has been here for years and isn’t a troll or such”

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 04/10/2019 07:11

I miss the good old days, but in truth, when I joined at the end of 2005 there were under 50k mners, and people were already regularly bemoaning the loss of the good old days.

I still feel like a newbie 14 years later. I’ve never been in any cliques and I’m too intermittent a poster. People make assumptions about longevity over how well they recognise the name.

I wish I hadn’t had to lose the old one when I got divorced; it’s the one thing I really regret having to let go! Not that anyone has mentioned it here, but it always appeared in the A-Zs of mners as it covered an awkward letter Grin

I really hate having to use lighthearted in titles. I watched one of my threads implode because a few missed the humour. It’s really irritating.

I think we are just all getting older. I joined as an incredibly naive 20-something, and MN supported me through growing up and leaving an abusive relationship. I will always love this place, but I do miss seeing dittany around. I like the few who carry on in their old names, it’s comforting.

And @GregoriaTheGreat I’ve also been wondering and hoping that SGB is back. I saw the name and hoped it was so.

I like posts like this to remind me just how many of us are still here.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/10/2019 07:11

Nobody defends poor SPaG.

You might not, but that is categorically not true across the board as a whole.

If you don't see the correlation between literacy levels and some things that are protected characteristics then you're not as bright as you evidently think you are.

Ah, the poster bright enough to make a snarky comment but not bright enough to develop an actual point. How we've missed you.

TheCanterburyWhales · 04/10/2019 07:12

I correct the posters doing the correcting.
The irony of it all is that the smug correctors always make mistakes themselves. Then it becomes fun.

Maltybiscuit · 04/10/2019 07:13

On listening to Madonna's hit song Like a Prayer the line
'Let the choir sing' I always thought it was
'Level Crossing'
Confused

BertrandRussell · 04/10/2019 07:15

The real knobbers are the people who pretend they don’t understand when a poster gets a word slightly wrong. Correcting’s bad enough, but the faux naive “I don’t understand - what are reigns and why would you put your baby in them?” comments really piss me off.

TheCanterburyWhales · 04/10/2019 07:15

NoSauce- I think, despite the poor kneejerk "deleted for privacy" rubbish etc, I prefer the faceless moderation.
The thing got a bit silly. Not nearly as silly as the toy throwing over Milton the cockroach though. I was on a long coach journey that day and it kept me agog for hours.

NoSauce · 04/10/2019 07:22

TheCanterburyWhales I don’t prefer the faceless mod, it feels like nobody is actually reading what you’re saying ( when you email or report ) and you’re just getting a pat on the head and “thanks for your report we will take a look blah blah” I often wonder if they really do.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 04/10/2019 07:26

It's sodding "lighthearted" in the OPs that kills it for me now.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 04/10/2019 07:27

But I love your "new" name FuckYouChris. Always makes me Grin.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 04/10/2019 07:27

If someone misses the humour then it's often not them, it's you.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 04/10/2019 07:30

But "lighthearted" is, sadly, necessary now. Poor old StealthPolarBear started a chatty thread about a slightly surreal experience on the tube yesterday and got a load of sneery snippy replies from a bunch of humourless twats for her efforts.

ShowOfHands · 04/10/2019 07:33

I blame aibu and penis beaker equally. If you build it (todger vessels and sparring arenas for cunts), they will come.

NoSauce · 04/10/2019 07:36

Nextphonewontbesamsung I can’t find Stealths thread, was it deleted?
