To mourn MN as it was in the Moulden Days

Admittedly, it was not perfect (full of quiches and Queen Bees). So much so that I gave it a rest for a considerable while. I may even have Flounced at some point (though was not a Mouldie. I would never have been cool enough).

But I now mourn the Olden Days when nobody had to bother with "lighthearted" when a thread was evidently lighthearted. Nobody took everything quite so seriously, even when they would have good reason to.

Posters generally had a decent command of spelling and grammar, too.

Maybe I'm just old and need to take up knitting or something.

Another rose tinted specs thread? Really?!

GregoriaTheGreat · 02/10/2019 22:45

Stealth, I think you've been around here a while too... Silly threads are fun. I just get fed up when someone pops up with something deadly serious which makes you feel that you can't say anything lighthearted for fear of someone thinking you're a heartless bitch.

Coffee, I was absolutely not a Moldie, and the whole business reminded me of schoolgirl cliques (which I was not part of, because I was not a Cool Girl). I had a few years away at that point, because I didn't like the cliquey-ness. But now I miss the wit and acerbic nature that characterised MN, even when I was on the receiving end of it (which I was, sometimes).

I'd rather have that than all the hun-stuff, and the feeling that I might accidentally offend someone who's just waiting to be offended.

I agree it's changed recently, and not for the better. I've not been here as long as some of you, only about 7 or 8 years, but the style is noticeably different than it was back then. And really funny threads are few & far between now.

Sparklingbrook · 02/10/2019 22:47

Nothing wrong with a bit of reminiscing.

Dljlr · 02/10/2019 22:47

chaos with the crazy phone

Yes!

There was some awful poster who was vair vair posh and patronising and I used to simultaneously hate her yet be compelled to respond to everything she wrote. It's driving me nuts trying to think of her username. She'd been here for years.

I got into a massive row with ShellyBoobs (?) once. MASSIVE. I was much too over-invested. Wonder if she's still about.

Apolloanddaphne · 02/10/2019 22:47

I was talking about Preggers and peng recently. I miss the olden MN days too.

JellyBook · 02/10/2019 22:48

The big hacking thing a few years back made many flee the site, or at least abandon their usual names.

To be clear I do t miss the mouldies occurrence per se, just that time or the time either side of it. Yes, some posters were a bit on the in yer face side, but you did know where you were with most.

Now I just read some responses and my eyes roll away, and I just think ffs calm the fuck down, nobody cares.

AnyFucker · 02/10/2019 22:49

@Dljlr do you mean LeQueen ?

multivac · 02/10/2019 22:49

And I know people hate this being pointed out, but it's true to say that there are a lot more posts with really poor SPAG. Which is very different from how it used to be

Nope. This is simply not true. The poster upthread has it nailed, when s/he talks about how this nostalgia is more about posters' own lives than some mythical MN Golden Age.

And yes, I was here.

multivac · 02/10/2019 22:50

In three years' time, current posters will be mourning this era. Truesay.

Sparklingbrook · 02/10/2019 22:50

Moldies was before my time.

StealthPolarBear · 02/10/2019 22:51

No I like silly threads. But whenever I start one now I end up getting a ticking off in the first few posts which just takes the shine off and makes me wish id not bothered.
It might be me but I never used to have this problem.

GregoriaTheGreat · 02/10/2019 22:51

Shirley, absolutely not rose-tinted. As I said, I Flounced. Possibly more than once. And I was absolutely not one of the Cool Gang. But I did like the cleverness, and the fact that most people (even if I didn't agree with anything they said, which I often didn't) were articulate and erudite.

I was torn to shreds on a couple of threads about SAHMS and independent schools (I was a SAHM with DC at independent schools). I am not rose-tinted about that, as it was horrible. However, it was better than the snowflakey stuff that goes on now. Now, debate would be shut down.

(i)Cod was a particular offender from my point of view, as I don't thikn I erve argrede whti a wrod seh sadi. But I miss that kind of humour.

AnyFucker YES! Thank you!! Pahaha love that my description was so apt you got her straight away Grin

GregoriaTheGreat · 02/10/2019 22:55

LeQueen. Yes. And Bonsoir, who became BonsoirAnna (I think). Think Xenia is still around (can't imagine she'd have joined a quiche, as she would have been too busy tending to her island).

MustardScreams · 02/10/2019 22:56

I miss proper belly laughing at multiple thread throughout the week. I can’t remember the last time I actually laughed at a thread.

Being able to tell someone to fuck off and not being reported 8000 times, comment deleted and suspended for ages.

The lack of SPaG now is utterly ridiculous. And if one more person calls me hun, or writes could of I’m going to go completely crackers.

xxx

ShirleyPhallus · 02/10/2019 22:56

Hmmm. One poster on this thread who is posting about their rose tinted experience was absolutely awful to me when I first joined, to the point of other posters telling her to pack it in. She thought she was being hilarious but was just being a bitch.

I’m glad the forum has changed and that kind of behaviour is stamped out now. The oldies may think it’s more boring now but being on the end of that clique mentality can be very unpleasant.

Katisha · 02/10/2019 22:56

I miss ye olde days too.

Andysbestadventure · 02/10/2019 22:56

I think what you mean, OP, is the current new 'yu ok hun?' demographic are more about sipping Zoflora from plastic champagne glasses, than being concerned about their 5yr olds entrance interview to Oxford in a few years.

It's all becoming a bit grim, tbh.

funinthesun19 · 02/10/2019 22:57

Out of interest, when did MN actually start? I’ve been here since 2012 so not that long really.

StealthPolarBear · 02/10/2019 22:58

Xenia is still around. Not seen many other old timers apart from Erm the one on this thread that begins with s, sparkling? And any fucker of course.
Has expat gone?

Pinkarsedfly · 02/10/2019 22:58

I think poor Bonsoir became quite ill.

I used to like LadyTophamHatt I’ve been here forever, and the main differences I’ve noticed are humourlessness and cynicism. I’ve been accused of working for M and S before for posting about some clothes I liked Hmm

AnyFucker · 02/10/2019 22:58

Erk, was it me @ShirleyPhallus ?

Sparklingbrook · 02/10/2019 22:58

I think it was 2000 funinthesun

ShirleyPhallus · 02/10/2019 22:58

It actually wasn’t @anyfucker!
