To mourn MN as it was in the Moulden Days

Admittedly, it was not perfect (full of quiches and Queen Bees). So much so that I gave it a rest for a considerable while. I may even have Flounced at some point (though was not a Mouldie. I would never have been cool enough).

But I now mourn the Olden Days when nobody had to bother with "lighthearted" when a thread was evidently lighthearted. Nobody took everything quite so seriously, even when they would have good reason to.

Posters generally had a decent command of spelling and grammar, too.

Maybe I'm just old and need to take up knitting or something.

Do you really think those relatively interesting former posters have decamped to the ghastly Reddit? Surely not. It sounds as if they would find themselves at an intellectual loose end over there. 🤣

Fizzypoo · 03/10/2019 18:09

I miss usual and mrsD Sad

I was on here years ago, we used to have lovely conversations about your cat @Sparklingbrook when I had a different name.

I'm not sure why I've been sucked back in, I got out for years and I'm now addicted again.

Scottish mum was funny. Who was that poster who pretended her life was amazing, queen something? She made me laugh.

I also miss the person who told me about changing her bed everyday as a treat, i still think of her when I change my bed more than weekly.

And yes MN was slightly clicky, posters would post funny threads and unless you were their friend they would ignore you. When I was lonely it was quite disheartening.

NoTheresa · 03/10/2019 18:10

I mean really, those creatures on that forum clearly do not have a decaying brain cell between them.

Sparklingbrook · 03/10/2019 18:11

She's not in the best of health now Fizzy, she's getting old but she's still a great cat. Smile

and threads which I suspect have been started by a political party/organised interest, but pretending not to be

I agree with you and for me its what's ruined the forum.

Hullygully · 03/10/2019 18:18

Oh lawks, TWC.

I miss the funny 1000 post threads too.

BIWI, you thought there were prefect groups and cliques??

WHO WERE THEY?

BIWI · 03/10/2019 18:19

@Coconutty - expat is fine! I have her on my FB and she posts regularly

@NoTheresa please don't start a thing on this thread between MN and Reddit. It's bad enough as it is over there without stirring things Sad.

hazeyjane · 03/10/2019 18:19

....just leaving this here for coconutty.

TheCanterburyWhales · 03/10/2019 18:19

I think it was Getorf with the sheets And she changed her jeans every day

Hullygully · 03/10/2019 18:20

My favourite post on MN ever was when Xenia, who flatly refused to ever respond personally to another poster ever and I imagine still does, posted that she always imagined Bonsoir's husband as a short man with a small pot belly in a red sweater.

It was just so perfect.

Hullygully · 03/10/2019 18:21

Is there a thing on reddit? Hmmm

Hullygully · 03/10/2019 18:21

Lovely old getorf. She was great, and in RL too.

hazeyjane · 03/10/2019 18:23

my image of Bonsoir was destroyed when she posted that she mumsnetted on her iPad whilst on the toilet.....but thinking about it maybe that was some booze and late night mumsnet fuelled fever dream.

Musmerian · 03/10/2019 18:25

I’m with you about the SPAG. It feels to me like a playground full of dim girls getting their knickers in a twist about nothing.

IfNot · 03/10/2019 18:26

In answer to all the "really??" Regarding Now there are lots of "big" characters but a lot of them are pretty horrible as a rule.
Yes really
There are a lot of regular posters who just seem to wait for an OP to say something they can pick holes in and they do all this fake "I'm afraid I just don't understand what you mean..? I hate it.
But whatever. I'm not ever going to start a thread in AIBU!
I forgot about Usual. I feel like I would notice her even under a name change.

Hullygully · 03/10/2019 18:26

Hazeyjane - Nooooooooooooo

I could never work out quite how many astonishingly gifted dc and dsc she had. Seemed like about 30

Hullygully · 03/10/2019 18:28

IfNot

Fair enough. Im never here any more so I haven't noticed. Don't people just tell them to fuck off?

BIWI · 03/10/2019 18:29

Oooh no! Instant ban for that @Hullygully!

BIWI · 03/10/2019 18:29

... well, a deletion anyway

NoTheresa · 03/10/2019 18:33

BIWI
I hear you. 🙂

keiratwiceknightly · 03/10/2019 18:35

Well, I quite liked the cliquiness- and o wasn't a cool kid by any means though I was probably reasonably well known by my original name. Mn in its earliest incarnation could be harsh, though I think rarely spiteful(Mouldies excepted.). Some of the posters named as nasty on this thread were unfailingly kind, if kindness was warranted. It was hilariously witty - I give you the Mumsnet Rhapsody, horses at the Olympic Games, etc... not dramas but just funny silliness unfolding over a period of hours. There was a pride in doing a spoof thread that sucked people in - and then revealing yourself at the end for a round of "cheeky! Well done though!"- such threads are deleted for trolling these days. Posters were largely more homogeneous- educated, reasonably well off etc; but not exclusively; eg there was a v young poster who was the single mum to a British-Asian dd, whose partner was expected to undertake an arranged marriage and ignore his first family.

I agree with those who have said Mn these days is not better or worse but different. But nostalgia is ok!

keiratwiceknightly · 03/10/2019 18:36

Oh and the swearing was great. One of my favourite ever titles was

CUNTING SAINSBURYS

SlightlyWizened · 03/10/2019 18:42

BIWI · 03/10/2019 18:47

TBF we can still swear! (Despite all the * * being used by some!)
