And about time, too. They never stop castigating her.

Prince Harry has said that he's worried that she'll end up being the same kind of victim that his mother was with regard to the Press.

I hope she wins her case.

Regarding the newspaper article which published the letter: might it be questioned as to why it has been left so long before bringing this action? The article was published in February. That's 8 or 9 months ago.

AlexaAmbidextra · 02/10/2019 02:43

The paparazzi press absolutely did kill Harry's mother.

No they didn’t. Her decision to not wear a seatbelt and a drunk driver killed her.

7salmonswimming · 02/10/2019 02:47

Presumably they got William’s and Charles’s approval before starting the action and making the statement. Their mother/ex-wife too.

PPs saying this could backfire: aren’t you missing the whole point? You’re believing the story spun, that Papa Markle and Meghan have had a huge falling out and aren’t talking blah blah. Doesn’t the statement say the leaked letter deliberately misleads? Meaning, that’s not necessarily the case? At the very least, you’d think Meghan has been advised that she needs to be sure of her dad’s response to the litigation, or alternately not care even if it’s the worst imaginable.

The DM are a shitrag of the highest order, but it’s good to have boundaries tested every so often. Today, it’s Meghan Markle and her dad. Tomorrow, it could be BoJo and Cummings. We, the paying public, need to know how low journalistic standards are allowed to go.

AlexaAmbidextra · 02/10/2019 02:47

Her life was made unbearable by the intrusion of the Press into her daily life.

It’s a matter of record that she regularly invited the press into her life when it suited her purpose.

Winterlife · 02/10/2019 03:13

@7salmonswimming No, I’m not missing the point. Going to war with the press never works out well.

7salmonswimming · 02/10/2019 03:23

@winterlife

Neither does not standing up to bullies.

For me, the bullying isn’t what the DM have said about Meghan Markle (I’ve actually no idea what the letter saga is). It’s corporates and people with deep pockets using their money as a shield to get away with whatever wrong doing they’re up to.

I suspect, as ever with the RF, they’ll settle. It’ll be some sort of gentleman’s (gentleman my arse) agreement not to do this again in return for a hefty contribution to such and such anti-bullying charity. Which sucks for everyone but the charity, as the law doesn’t get tested.

MoonageDaydreamz · 02/10/2019 03:43

I think they are shooting themselves in the foot with this, as they're biting the hand that feeds them.

There may be an expert to correct me here I don't think that a letter is protected by copyright laws, so assuming the letter was passed to Mail journalists by her father (not illegally obtained) then I can't see how they have a leg to stand on. My personal opinion is that the letter was sent by her knowing that her father would leak it, so I'm very suspicious of all of this.

As for the rest of the negative press, I don't read the Mail so it's possible they have said nasty unsubstantiated stuff about her. If so then fair enough to sue.

But generally what i have read is reports of demanding diva like behaviour from staff and negative commentary about the private jets, the renovation etc, which I think is all fair play to be in the public domain, especially their tax payer funded escapades.

Harriedharriet · 02/10/2019 03:43

I am stunned that the newspaper in question is allowed to pursue them in such a manner, and it does seem to be trolling and harassment. The racism is nothing short of mind-blowing. Shocking in this day and age.
All the ingredients are there for something very bad to happen.
Why the hell is no one standing up for them? Seems like everyone with position is awfully quiet.

Tellmetruth4 · 02/10/2019 03:47

About time she sued. Unfortunately she can’t sue over most of the malicious stories but she has a smoking gun with the private letters.

She’s a real person and the way she’s been treated just because she married a man who happens to be a prince has been unprecedented in its viciousness.

It reflects badly on the nation that the DM is Britain’s biggest selling paper. There are a lot of bad minded and insecure people out there.

RainbowsAndGlitterAndUnicorns · 02/10/2019 03:51

I hope she wins. She has been treated horribly and disrespectfully by the media. As others have said much of that is unethical but not illegal. So I think it's only fair they are suing on the basis of the letter being published.

I hope this reduces the media hate

recrudescence · 02/10/2019 06:09

I hope this puts a stop to the vile rag and it's (sic) sanctimonious muck raking and lies.

You have precisely identified what won’t happen as a result of this legal action.

ThebishopofBanterbury · 02/10/2019 06:22

Its not just Meghan suing, it's Harry too. About time too! I for one think it's fantastic. The daily mail/mail on Sunday is the most revolting, bullying, lying source of media around. They've got away with too much lately, it's time someone took them down. Their content poisons people's minds.

Dongdingdong · 02/10/2019 06:23

Unfortunately she can’t sue over most of the malicious stories

Why not, out of interest?

missfliss · 02/10/2019 06:28

YADNBU

Daily Fail is a disgusting piece of shittrature

Monestasi · 02/10/2019 06:28

My personal opinion is that the letter was sent by her knowing that her father would leak it, so I'm very suspicious of all of this.

A hand written letter, sent to Mexico by snail mail.. Of course she knew he would leak it.

Trewser · 02/10/2019 06:32

I hope she wins. Hopefully it will make my sister think twice before posting bitchy things about her on FB.

Limpshade · 02/10/2019 06:43

I'm glad they are now legally able to make a stand against the DM. It's one thing to manufacture bullshit conjectural stories but quite another to publish someone's personal letters. Hopefully suing against one will deter the other.

recrudescence · 02/10/2019 06:46

... it's time someone took them down.

You are being ridiculous. In what sense do you think The MOS will be ‘taken down’ by this legal action?

LongTimeSinceSingle · 02/10/2019 06:51

They are bullying her about her dad and family and a couple of other things.

However, both her and Harry are a pair of champagne swigging, unnecessary private jet using, multiple holidaying pair of virtue signallers who think they are saving the world but probably adding more CO2 levels to the atmosphere in the process.

I don't agree with the paper and I think Harry is right and if I were him I'd move to the US where they can be unbothered and happy and she the planet there whilst being on the LA circuit and thoroughly adored.

If Andrew could move away that would be great too.

milveycrohn · 02/10/2019 06:54

I think there was a case similar to this in the past. Ie maybe letters written by Diana.
I am very sure that the ruling was that the copyright remained with the writer, (Meghan) not the recipient.
Frankly, I admire Meghan. At least she has had a job and worked for a living. I admit acting is not a regular 9 to 5 job, but it is highly competitive. So, although I had not seen the program she was in, I guess it was a job that loads of other aspiring actresses would like to have had.

NoSauce · 02/10/2019 06:57

Yanbu. I hope she wins too.

coconuttelegraph · 02/10/2019 06:59

Her life was made unbearable by the intrusion of the Press into her daily life. The D of S is undergoing even worse intrusion into hers

Are you old enough to have been fully aware of the level of media scrutiny of Princess Diana? There's really no comparison with anyone nowadays.

I have no idea what any letter said and I wonder if this isn't going to make more people aware of whatever the objectionable content is. Don't large newspaper organisations have teams of legal advisors, if it's so clear cut on whether a private letter can be published they must have made a spectacular error.

MsTSwift · 02/10/2019 07:09

It feels like it was spiralling like it did with Diana before she died. I think he had to take a stand.

BalloonSlayer · 02/10/2019 07:14

The paparazzi press absolutely did kill Harry's mother.

No they didn’t. Her decision to not wear a seatbelt and a drunk driver killed her.

Diana was forced to rely on someone else's driver and security, with the driver unbeknownst to her turning out not to be up to the job, BECAUSE she was continually harassed by paparazzi. Not just that day, that evening . . . EVERY day. She could never just hop in a taxi like I imagine Sarah Ferguson could do, because of the harrassment.

The paparazzi meant Diana's lifestyle, post-divorce, was that she had to rely on drivers and security. And that led to her death because Fayed's ones failed her.

EleanorReally · 02/10/2019 07:15

Isnt it PRince Harry that is taking them to court though?
