www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/jeremy-corbyn-brexit-eu-lisbon-treaty-europe-empire-military-video-a8766421.html

Mass immigration from the European Union has been used to “destroy” the conditions of British workers, Jeremy Corbyn said today.

The Labour leader was pressed on his party's attitude to immigration on the Andrew Marr programme. He reiterated his belief that Britain should leave the Single Market, claiming that "the single market is dependent on membership of the EU . . . the two things are inextricably linked."

Laying out the case for leaving the single market, Corbyn used language we have rarely heard from him - blaming immigration for harming the lives of British workers.

The Labour leader said that after leaving the EU, there would still be European workers in Britain and vice versa. He added: “What there wouldn’t be is the wholesale importation of underpaid workers from central Europe in order to destroy conditions, particularly in the construction industry.”

Imnotthrowingawaymyshot · 27/09/2019 18:00

Do you defend his constant crying of the "elite" when describing the people on the benches opp him in HOC?

Or do you feel that the Etonians can hardly be blamed for where they were sent to school either? And yet all he does is constantly bang on about the elite.

leckford · 27/09/2019 18:00

Oh but I thought EU immigration was ‘beneficial’ and they paid more in than they took out (unless using the NHS to have babies and getting social housing)

Graphista · 27/09/2019 18:05

"This is what we should be aiming for, not looking at what we can provide for the lowest cost possible." Absolutely! We need to VALUE education for ALL.

"Local Authorities already have powers to bring into use unoccupied properties and rent them out to people who need homes" powers maybe but NOT the funding!

"If I've worked for something, I should be able to keep it, not have it confiscated because some people don't have it." The wealthier people haven't earned that wealth alone! They have employees who have done the graft yet they won't even pay them a living wage, instead the low wages are subsidised as tax credits and that's spun as a "welfare benefit" and the employees in receipt (who have FUCK ALL power to change things) are portrayed as lazy benefit scroungers! While the CEO's of ftse 100 companies get millions in salary and bonuses "earned" by not paying their employees a living wage.

What suggested, to me at least, that you may not be from the UK was your reference to "public schools" to mean what we would call "state schools". In the UK, a "Public School" is a very elite, private school. Eton and Harrow are "Public Schools". (I believe that, in the US, "public school" = our "state school". Are you from the US?)

I would not vote for the current Labour Party for many of the reasons raised above. In particular, I find their stance on education to be in line with the lowering of standards, "had-enough-of-experts", lowest common denominator mentality that currently predomnates. The Shadow Education Secretary is somebody who did not complete her education. That she should have influence on the future of our world-leading universities does not strike me as admirably democratic, but as horrendously anti-intellectual.

(Additionally, I am not, and do not pretend to be, a socialist; I am probably a Classical Liberal. The Liberal Democrats are my party of choice, though they are to the left of Classical Liberalism. I fully support the European project, which is undeniably (neo)liberal. Corbyn, as a hard-leftist, unsurprisingly does not.)

oliversmumsarmy

I strongly agree with every word you’ve said

CasperGutman · 27/09/2019 18:09

I think of myself as a natural Labour supporter, and even a month ago I'd have struggled to come up with a good answer to the question in the OP. The recent policy announcers on abolishing private schools, giving private tenants a "right to buy" and somehow enforcing a four-day week make it look like some in Labour are setting out to convince centrists the party is unelectable.

I would probably still vote Labour as I have enormous respect for my local MP, but it looks depressingly unlikely they can achieve a majority with policies like these.

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 27/09/2019 18:09

@justonecottonpickingminute from Germany actually but was lucky to go to an international school which has allowed me to be fluent in English.

Adoptthisdogornot · 27/09/2019 18:13

Most of my family are military or ministry of defence. I believe that Corbyn has no interest in maintaining any semblence of a functional military and i think it would be very unwise to cut funding further than it already has been. Corbyn is strongly against the nuclear deterrent which scares me.

BertrandRussell · 27/09/2019 18:42

“Corbyn is strongly against the nuclear deterrent which scares me.”

Now that’s a logical reason not to vote for him. I don’t agree with you- but it’s logical!

Graphista · 27/09/2019 18:52

I too am from a military family.

The tories have cut defence to the bone! Shooting themselves in the foot in my opinion as traditionally military tend to vote Tory!

On the nuclear option, trident is outdated and an expensive toy left over from the Cold War.

Warfare has moved on, nuclear capability provides a little deterrent but quite honestly the part of our military that protects us best is intelligence! Prevention being better than cure.

In terms of threat, bio weapons are far more likely to be used in a large scale attack, but the greater threat is cyber warfare, with everything computerised/automated now attacking our economy and utilities is more likely.

There's a reason the twin towers rather than say a military dock was targeted on 9/11.

Graphista · 27/09/2019 18:53

You also might like to look at just how many tories voted NOT to strengthen the military covenant - and lib dems for that matter

chomalungma · 27/09/2019 19:01

What's curious about the nuclear deterrent is how many countries don't have it.

Why do we need it when most countries don't have it....or is it just to keep us at the top table.

Jillyhilly · 27/09/2019 19:01

And yet all he does is constantly bang on about the elite.

Hatred and envy of the rich is a hallmark of the left, it seems. George Orwell wrote about it in the brilliant book The Road To Wigan Pier.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 27/09/2019 19:05

I look at the attack on a women's meeting on Monday, the perpetrators including a Labour MP's staffer, the lies being posted on social media by actual Labour officers and the absolute silence from Labour. And I think of Corbyn himself being held back from what looks like a violent lunge at a woman journo with his fists clenched. And I think of the abuse of female MPs by Labour supporters and members. And I think FUCK NO!

That's not even going into the disgusting racism, including that of Corbyn himself, or the policies designed to benefit the rich at the direct expense of the poorest, or things like actually faking the result of a vote shown on live TV.

Namenic · 27/09/2019 19:22

I think he has principles unlike boris... but I don’t agree with him. His plans would cost a lot of money and would not make UK competitive. But One silver lining is that the parties are actually discernible now - you have momentum on the left, Lib Dem’s centre and tories shifted right. New labour people and ‘one nation’ tories should leave their parties because realistically there is little difference between Both of these and the Lib Dem’s...

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 27/09/2019 19:56

It's extraordinary how much bullshit people believe. It's like the daily express campaign on inheritance tax all over again. Only 7% of people in this country go to private schools. I can't believe that all of mumenet are in that bracket.
The top earners don't pay any tax at all. They've got all their money in the Virgin islands or similar. Labour want to stop that.
None of these policies are particularly radical. We used to have free University, national post office and trains etc. and really not very long ago. We didn't live in a communist state. These things are quite normal. There should be rules about owning property and not using it. Again, this isn't radical: there are already rules about this sort of thing.
Stop believing the smears and learn some history.
Also, to those who say that corbyn isn't an effective opposition. The Tories under Theresa may and Johnson have lost an unprecedented number of votes in parliament. The opposition have stopped no deal. What is it that you want? Upper class smoothness and to be told what to do by "your betters", I suspect.

HermioneWeasley · 27/09/2019 20:01

John McDonnell as chancellor is a terrifying prospect - I don’t want a Marxist running the economy

Corbyn hates women and thinks we should have no spaces away from men

He is funded by the hard left unions. Unions running the country hadn’t gone well historically. Colleagues in some industries have reported that unions are so confident he’ll get in and back them that they are literally turning their backs on management in meetings and going back to work to rule

I’m in the “anyone by corbyn” camp.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 27/09/2019 20:12

anti-Semitism... If he wins I'm packing my bags to Israel.

MrsWicket · 27/09/2019 23:25

It must be hard work for him getting on and off that fence. Agree with Saucery, he’s a hypocritical twat. Don’t preach to me about ‘the greater good’ when you’re earning £80 grand a year and live in a million pound house.

Nomorechickens · 28/09/2019 00:27

The bastard!

EmeraldShamrock · 28/09/2019 00:38

From reading threads, it seems both sides are so far apart in their views. Is there no middle ground.
Labour making promising to increase benefits, get rid of private schools.
The Tories cutting benefits, making changes to keep the working class in their place.
If either party tried to appeal to all voters, fairness across the board they might get somewhere instead of playing jekyll and hyde between social status.
It would be hard to support either party.

Do you think he can deliver those things. Changing all the above would cost lots of money, I thought there was no money. The set up with UC and PIP is horrific.
Is he lying? Or have the Tories been cutting back on emergency and health services risking life to save some money they could afford to spend.
Unfortunately some people are happy with the changes made by the Tories Sad

Crimson72 · 28/09/2019 04:41

I run a small limited company with no staff - it’s just me. I make about £27K a year, live in London and can afford to pay my bills and have a little bit left over each month. It’s enough to cover all the essentials, but I haven’t had a decent holiday in years for example. I’m concerned that any rise in corporation tax will make life even tighter for me financially, and that is why I won’t be voting Corbyn - unless he guarantees that the higher corporation tax rates only apply to big businesses. Although even if he did guarantee that, I’m not sure I’d trust him.

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 28/09/2019 05:31

I'd be overjoyed. I don't think it will happen though, and in my area I'll be voting Lib Dem as more likely to topple the current Tory seat.
