How bad is 16.8mmol

3hrs after eating blueberries?

I bought a new BG meter as I lost my last one - which I bought when I was told I was prediabetic. It arrived today so I tested when I got in. The reading was 16.8mmol.

I'm going to see what my morning readings are but it doesn't look good does it? ☹️

No, she shouldn't go on any course until a qualified professional has ruled out type one diabetes which needs to happen as a matter of urgency. If she has ketones and hyperglycaemia she may be at risk of diabetic ketoacidosis. She'll need to rule out type one before going on the waiting list for a course, or worrying about whether she's had a 20g carb banana or an 8g carb bowl of berries (which are low GI by the way).

SabineUndine · 26/09/2019 20:20

You can only get on the course I'm talking about through a GP referral, worried so wind your neck in.

ElizaDee · 26/09/2019 20:24

Blood ketones were 0.7. The dangerous level is 3 so mine are well under.

All my other bloods were fine. They just said go to the GP tomorrow. The Dr said it can be diet controlled or by pills but see the GP about it.

Good that you are seeing someone tomorrow.

The way this thread is going is similar to my real life experiences with diabetes with lots of conflicting advice. Even within the same diabetic team, the HCPs couldn't agree on what was wrong with me or what was the best course of action.

OP, if you feel uneasy with what the GP told you, get a second opinion.

I've got an appointment with my GP later today.

Fbg this morning was 14.9

Glad you are taking these steps. I hope that they can bring your levels down quickly, you'll feel better after that.

salmonrose · 27/09/2019 10:46

Fbg this morning was 14.9

I'm not in/from the UK but in my country prediabetes would be a morning glucose of up to 7, above that they call it diabetes. Make sure the GP takes it seriously.

worriedaboutmygirl · 27/09/2019 12:47

In the UK a random glucose (rather than fasting which is normally lower) which is over 11 mmol is diagnostic. The real concern I have for the OP is that GPs are so immersed in messages about type two diabetes that they may miss other kinds (type one, LADA, MODY for example). Depending on the type and how it is progressing in the individual, this can lead to life threatening mistakes.

OP, I hope you get on ok at the GP. Please do update us - we are thinking of you.

ElizaDee · 27/09/2019 18:27

The GP did my bg, it was 12.8, and other tests - blood pressure etc. He was going to send me to the hospital as my urine test turned purple really quickly. He rang them though and they said I don't need to go. He gave me metformin but didn't discuss diet or exercise. I have to go back on tuesday for more blood tests and friday for the results.

I hope the metformin helps.

worriedaboutmygirl · 28/09/2019 17:51

I hope the metformin helps. Was the urine test the ketone one? I'm still concerned for you that you have ketones. What level were they? Please do explicitly ask them to rule out type one diabetes, LADA or MODY and insist that they give you a definitive answer. Don't be afraid to call an ambulance if feel you are experiencing signs of DKA www.nhs.uk/conditions/diabetic-ketoacidosis/

I hope you feel well over the weekend and that your BG starts coming down. Good luck for Tuesday.

betternamepending · 30/09/2019 17:09

How are you feeling now?

ElizaDee · 01/10/2019 15:32

I feel fine thank you, I didn't particularly feel bad last week. I do feel slightly more 'well' though.

That sounds encouraging
