How bad is 16.8mmol

ElizaDee · 25/09/2019 22:56

3hrs after eating blueberries?

I bought a new BG meter as I lost my last one - which I bought when I was told I was prediabetic. It arrived today so I tested when I got in. The reading was 16.8mmol.

I'm going to see what my morning readings are but it doesn't look good does it? ☹️

There's some very wrong advice here about both diagnosis & diet (I work in diabetes care).

https://www.diabetes.org.uk/professionals/position-statements-reports/diagnosis-ongoing-management-monitoring/newdiagnosticccriteriaforrdiabetes?amp

Have a read through these OP.

keo8260 · 26/09/2019 07:24

That is a high reading but you need more to get a true idea of what is going on. I also agree with a pp and recommended you look at Dr Jason fung. Amazing results using diet. He really cares about helping people regain control of their lives. Also Tim noakes.

Link about low carb diets (from a sensible website)

Diabetes.co.uk. Is a FAR better site than the .org site.

ElizaDee · 26/09/2019 08:58

Fasting bg this morning was 16.8 again. I just tested again as I just got to work and am about to have breakfast and it was 19.1.

I've got a fucking afternoon tea booked for saturday ffs Sad.

If it’s rising you need to go and get a GP appointment. Don’t leave this.

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 09:02

Get an urgent appointment. Not a three weeks away one. If you get an infection that won’t budge, or worse, it’ll be miserable. In my area they insist on two A1Cs, a couple of weeks apart to diagnose and in your shoes I’d be keen to get a prescription for metformin ASAP.

ElizaDee · 26/09/2019 09:09

Once you start medication can you ever come off it?

I'd rather do a vlcd and see if that makes any difference first if possible.

You need to be seen urgently. Unless your machine is malfunctioning badly you're diabetic. Untreated it's dangeous.

MissSmiley · 26/09/2019 09:18

It's rubbish that once you start on insulin you can never come off it unless you get diagnosed with type 1
Take a look at DietDoctor.com lots of people have reversed their type 2 with diet alone

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 09:22

Yes people do reverse their type 2 diabetes and come off medication. I’ve known three that have. Not me sadly.

ElizaDee · 26/09/2019 09:24

I'll get an appointment for tomorrow then. They are pretty good at seeing you same day if you go in there in the morning.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 26/09/2019 09:30

Get to a doctor. I know you’re thinking about Type 2, but you could also have Type 1. As many adults get diagnosed with T1 each year as children - its not a childhood illness. It can get very dangerous very fast.

If it is Type 2 (and you definitely have one or the other!) you can get your blood sugars down with knowledge, diet and a lot of testing (7x a day). Consider getting a Libre.

But start with the doctor, best to stay alive if you can.

Proseccoinamug · 26/09/2019 09:36

You need an urgent appointment today, OP, not tomorrow.

MoreProseccoNow · 26/09/2019 09:55

Can you get to a Lloyd's chemist today, OP? If not your GP?

www.lloydspharmacy.com/en/info/type-2-diabetes-testing

I really would not be relying on random, untrained posters on the internet - you need to see a properly trained HCP.

PeppermintPatty10 · 26/09/2019 10:00

Sorry I know it has been said already, but the slightest trace of sugar on your hands can wildly swing the reading! Scrub clean and then test again?

MoreProseccoNow · 26/09/2019 10:12

And making sure Meter strips are in date......

ElizaDee · 26/09/2019 10:12

I had just washed my hands when I tested both times this morning.

OP posts:
ElizaDee · 26/09/2019 10:13

The strips expire in June 2020.

Please go get some medical advice you sound like you are diabetic now , left untreated it can give you nerve damage or you can end up with DKA diabetic keto- acidosis it’s life threatening so don’t waste anytime .

SchrodingersMeowth · 26/09/2019 10:27

I think you should try and see someone today, to continue to eat through the day when your sugar levels are already above 19 seems pretty dangerous.

ElizaDee · 26/09/2019 11:35

18.0 2hrs after breakfast. I just found out my boss is diabetic so he will be ok with me leaving. I'm going to wait for him to get out of his meeting and then see about going to the drs.

OP posts:
Lougle · 26/09/2019 11:52

I'm glad you'll be seen today.

KiaraN83 · 26/09/2019 12:05

@MoreProseccoNow we aren’t untrained people giving out information, I can’t speak for everyone else but I have lived with diabetes for years so I do know what I’m talking about. People who are “trained” in a diabetes will never be as knowledgable as the people who live with it everyday

SilverDragonfly1 · 26/09/2019 12:10

One thing I will say is that when you have the medication sorted out, it will feel amazing! You realise how tired, thirsty etc you actually were, because it sneaks up gradually so doesn't seem unusual right now.
