To ask if a Rosaline is a terrible name?

DH and I had settled for Rosaline with nickname Rosie for bump and I know that everyone says to keep the baby’s name secret until it’s here (oh how I wish I’d listened) but I mistakenly gave into my mum’s pestering and gave her the name to which she made a face which led to me making more mistakes and asking some friends what they thought and had various negative responses with old cat lady being one of them. We thought Rosaline was a pretty, uncommon but not unknown name- are we wrong?

I like it.

AdoreTheBeach · 26/09/2019 07:17

Lovely name and she can choose her nickname if she wants or not. Tell your mother it’s rude to make negative comments on your choice of name, especially as it’s a normal, traditional name.

I too spoke to my bump by name (second and third bump too), as did my DH and subsequent children. We thought This particularly helped with bonding and lack of baby jealousy with siblings. They used to think baby (ies) moved because of gearing their name. (I have three DC with varying years in between)

malificent7 · 26/09/2019 07:19

Its lovely...go for it!

malificent7 · 26/09/2019 07:21

How is rosalin pretentious? Better than nauseating cutsie names.

DorisDances · 26/09/2019 07:21

How are you pronouncing it OP? I immediately thought roz-o-line but wondered if roz-a-leen. Then I'd could be either of these but with rose at the front

BlueMoonRising · 26/09/2019 07:27

@100PercentThatBitch you have no idea how glad I am that someone else gets my reference Grin

dobbys · 26/09/2019 07:29

dorisdances to be honest we’re stuck between pronouncing it Roz-a-line or Rose-a-line. I’ve been scouring the internet trying to find out which more pronunciation is the more common one so we can choose it but haven’t found an answer yet Blush

Lovely Shakespearean name

(and the Shakespearean pronunciation is roz-a-line, don't like -leen. And -lin is a separate name Rosalyn, which always seems like Rosalind with a bit missing)

Pharlapwasthebest · 26/09/2019 07:37

It’s lovely.

OMGshefoundmeout · 26/09/2019 07:40

I can see that for older people it will seem old fashioned but for the younger generation (by which I mean under 35) it probably sounds very fresh. If you like it use it, don’t name your child to please someone else.

BykerBykerOoh · 26/09/2019 07:43

I think it’s really pretty. I like Rosaleen and Rosalie too though.

Oysterbabe · 26/09/2019 07:45

I would assume Roz-a-line if I saw it written and I prefer that.

Nousernameforme · 26/09/2019 07:49

I think it's lovely and Rosie for short is so cute. If you love it stick with it op

BeanBag7 · 26/09/2019 07:53

I think Rosaline is really pretty and unusual. I like Rosalie as well, which is a bit more common and people are more likely to be able to pronounce it.
Your mum will soon get over it once baby arrives, or at least will learn to hold her tongue.

ForkHandlesplease · 26/09/2019 08:05

It's a nice underused name. I would pronounce Rose leen. (Irish )

Blakes77 · 26/09/2019 08:08

I read it as Rosa-leen and was going to say it's great if she is going to be a country singer. (I like country singers). It's a Loretta kind of name. Barely anyone is going to know it's from Shakespeare and therefore posh Grin

Alexandrite · 26/09/2019 10:58

Lovely name. I'm not keen on Rosamund or Rosalind though.

Alexandrite · 26/09/2019 10:58

Oh and Rosie is lovely

StroppyWoman · 26/09/2019 11:06

It’s a lovely name.
(I pronounce it Roz-a-line, like in R&J)

snowball28 · 26/09/2019 11:09

I really like it, I like Rosalie too.

Also really like Rosie and Rosa but probably prefer Rosa as NN.

snowball28 · 26/09/2019 11:10

Also I would pronounce it Roz-a-lin if that helps.

thecatsthecats · 26/09/2019 11:15

Friar Lawrence to Romeo. Splendid name and more original than Juliet, even of Rosaline got the push.

Rosaline had a lucky escape if you ask me.

I think the whole thing was Shakespeare poking fun at moron teenagers thinking they're in luuuuurve every five minutes and acting like it's the end of the world.

Librocubicularist · 26/09/2019 11:18

Your choice is neither ridiculous nor offensive. There will always be somebody that doesn't like your name choice whatever it is. Go for it and ignore your mum.

HeyGepetto · 26/09/2019 11:22

I think it’s a lovely name, I read it as Roz a line... I love Rosie too. If you like it, go for it.
I wouldn’t trust the internet for common pronunciation though, I did this as a guide for my daughter Naomi and no one pronounces it our way 😔 (short O like in Briony)

Putoutmoreflags · 26/09/2019 11:50

It’s lovely OP. I read it to rhyme with Caroline. Also reminds me of Shakespeare, as the lucky one who got away from that little twerp Romeo.
Ignore the naysayers, a plague on all their houses!
