To ask if a Rosaline is a terrible name?

DH and I had settled for Rosaline with nickname Rosie for bump and I know that everyone says to keep the baby’s name secret until it’s here (oh how I wish I’d listened) but I mistakenly gave into my mum’s pestering and gave her the name to which she made a face which led to me making more mistakes and asking some friends what they thought and had various negative responses with old cat lady being one of them. We thought Rosaline was a pretty, uncommon but not unknown name- are we wrong?

Not my choice but it is a perfectly normal name I wouldn't bat an eyelid. Rosie is especially normal!

Writersblock2 · 25/09/2019 22:19

I think it’s beautiful.

Rubyupbeat · 25/09/2019 22:20

Beautiful name

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 25/09/2019 22:20

I love it, beautiful and classic. Not too keen on Rosie as a NN tbh, it's ok, but not as unique as Rosaline, what about Rosa?

MuddlingMackem · 25/09/2019 22:21

Never heard of a Rosaline, and only know of one Rosalind. Just beware, you may be at the start of a new fashion though. Grin

SachaStark · 25/09/2019 22:21

No, it’s a beautiful name. Classic, but not too far removed from the 21st century. Shakespearean connotations.

And it’s got decent shortenings. Rosie for a small child, Rose or Ros for when she’s older.

PierreBezukov · 25/09/2019 22:22

It's not nice. But what about Rosina? Rosina is nice.

SunnivaGunne · 25/09/2019 22:23

Rosaleen is common among older women in Ireland.

I prefer Rosalie though.

TitchyP · 25/09/2019 22:23

I think it's lovely, I also like Rosalie. I would agree you might be at the start of a trend though.

I gave my son a relatively uncommon name 16 years ago. They're everywhere now Grin

Stompythedinosaur · 25/09/2019 22:24

It reminds me of Romeo and Juliet. I think it is quite a nice name.

Bodicea · 25/09/2019 22:25

It’s lovely but perhaps a touch pretentious, though which would put me off.
Prefer Rosalind, or Rosamund.

NaToth · 25/09/2019 22:25

I know this spelt Rosaline, but with the final 'e' pronounced, so Rosalina. Lovely name.

BR540 · 25/09/2019 22:25

It’s not my favourite Rose name by a long shot. Prefer:

Rose
Rosa
Rosanna
Rosalie
Roisin if you’re Irish

(Really don’t like fusty old Rosemary, Rosalind or variants!).

However...it is a lovely name! And the midwife who delivered DC2 was an angelic Northern Irish woman called Rosaline. So I vote for it if you love it Grin.

Claphands · 25/09/2019 22:26

The more I hear it the more I like it, Rosalind is lovely too

Maseandmum · 25/09/2019 22:26

It’s beautiful

sendinallthesheep · 25/09/2019 22:27

It's a beautiful name, unusual and sort of ethereal sounding.

If you love it, stick with it. People should keep their faces and mean comments to themselves. And if they can't, no baby cuddles once she's here. That'll learn 'em.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 25/09/2019 22:28

The trouble with any name that ends in “ine” is that half the world pronounces it “een” and the other half “ine”. Which can get very annoying. (My mum has one such name.)

I really love Rosamund and Rosalind though and everyone can pronounce them correctly.

Idontwanttotalk · 25/09/2019 22:30

I had a cousin named Rosalyn whose name was abbreviated to Ros.

Not a name I'd choose but it's okay. Not common, not unknown. The spelling is a bit different to the norm so your DD will spend her lifetime correcting people.

Drogosnextwife · 25/09/2019 22:32

I think it's a lovely name if you are pronouncing it Rosalyn. I don't like it with a D on the end. I agree that having "ine" at the end may have some people pronouncing it Rosaleen.

100PercentThatBitch · 25/09/2019 22:35

Rosaline and Rosalind were used in separate Shakespeare plays

Romeo is head over heels for Rosaline before he meets Juliet

"The all seeing sun, never saw her match since the world first begun"

Quite an auspicious quote

Sciurus83 · 25/09/2019 22:37

One of my best friends is called Rosaline, it's a lovely name. Feminine without being too girly girl, she went by Ros for a while but now the full name, both lovely.

Likethebattle · 25/09/2019 22:38

@Mumoftwoyoungkids you are right my mum Is called Georgina and she pronounces it ‘eena’ but many say ‘ina’ (rhyme with miner). She barely uses it and has been called her middle name her whole life (why my grandmother didn’t put her middle name first if that’s what she was going to known as is a mystery). Aye also goes by Mum.

NearlyGranny · 25/09/2019 22:41

" ...what a deal of brine
Hath washed thy sallow cheeks for Rosaline!"

Friar Lawrence to Romeo. Splendid name and more original than Juliet, even of Rosaline got the push.

Ignore, ignore, ignore the negative Nellies. They named you; you get to name your baby. End of.

It's s name with many versions do she can choose her own variant when she grows up. We have a less common Shakespearean daughter, too. It's classy.

MatchaMuffin · 25/09/2019 22:41

I prefer Rosalind or Rosalie but yes, it's nice.

Never share baby names with family before. Someone will always pull a face. Often the same people later exclaim how perfect it is.

Mumofboth · 25/09/2019 22:41

I really don’t like it but no one apart from you and your husband need to like it. My dad asked me if I was sure about my DDs name plenty of times. I laughed. The name was unusual and I didn’t and unique (two names double barrelled that I’ve not heard together). Fast-forward ten years and three of her friends have variations on her name.
I think it’s hilarious and I still love the name.
