To ask if a Rosaline is a terrible name?

DH and I had settled for Rosaline with nickname Rosie for bump and I know that everyone says to keep the baby’s name secret until it’s here (oh how I wish I’d listened) but I mistakenly gave into my mum’s pestering and gave her the name to which she made a face which led to me making more mistakes and asking some friends what they thought and had various negative responses with old cat lady being one of them. We thought Rosaline was a pretty, uncommon but not unknown name- are we wrong?

Brings Romeo & Juliet to mind. I think Rosalie is prettier.

MillicentMartha · 25/09/2019 23:12

As jam says, how would you pronounce it? I like Rozza Lyn, (or Rozza Lind) but not so keen on Rozza line or Rozza leen tbh, they both sound a bit dated. I don’t like the Rosa pronunciation at all. Maybe with a different spelling to clarify the pronunciation you prefer?

SunshineAngel · 25/09/2019 23:16

I think it's a lovely name, and the option of shortening it to Rosie (or, I suppose, Rose) is great too.

100PercentThatBitch · 25/09/2019 23:16

@BlueMoonRising

Also, average cellist Grin

EMacCoffee · 25/09/2019 23:36

@taytosandwich that's what I thought, I had been reading it like Rosa-Lee but wasn't sure.

@Jamhandprints it's interesting how there are so many pronunciations of the same name. I never thought it could be pronounced like the tea.

Thank you both. Sorry if anyone else has responded and I haven't seen it - thank you too!!

Wehttam · 25/09/2019 23:39

Not a fan, it sounds old, baby Karen or baby Ethel and baby Rosaline. 🤮

DramaAlpaca · 25/09/2019 23:43

I like it pronounced so the final syllable is like that of Caroline - Rose-a-line. Like in Shakespeare.

Gingerbreadsonme · 25/09/2019 23:47

What beautiful names Northernlurker if only I hadn’t had so many sons...Grin

Ellmau · 26/09/2019 00:21

It's lovely!

littlehappyhippo · 26/09/2019 00:44

Not a fan either @dobbys

Rose is OK, but I am not keen on Rosie or Rosemary or Rosamund, and Rosaline is a bit blehhh...

Rose though? Nice.

Countryescape · 26/09/2019 00:48

I really don’t like it but if you like it then go with it.

Katzia · 26/09/2019 00:54

I think it's has gypsy or country connotations. Wouldn't call my child Rosaline, Rosalind more preferable, if you must have a variant of Rose.

painauchocolat84 · 26/09/2019 05:37

It’s okay with ‘line’ sound at the end - I really don’t like it with ‘lyn’ sound.

NearlyGranny · 26/09/2019 06:04

Side issue, but how rude of your DM to pull a face when she heard your choice! Poker face and "Oh, how lovely!" are the compulsory responses if you are privileged enough to be confided in. Likewise the rude friend.

When DC were born (twins) back in the day before everyone had mobiles, DH was in the waiting room where the payphone was and overheard half another new dad's phonecall to his mum and dad, thus:
It's a girl!
Nikita.
No, she's a girl.
(Long silence....)
Well, WE like it!

There was a song around at the time, so I always know a female Nikita is going to be roughly the same age as the twins. Grandparents would have been old enough to remember Nikita Kruschev, of course.

cantfindname · 26/09/2019 06:07

Biased because I know the loveliest young girl with the name Rosaline. I think it is lovely, very feminine and can be shortened attractively.

Dongdingdong · 26/09/2019 06:21

Is it pronounced Rozzaline, Rozzaleen, Rowsaline or Rowsaleen?

It’s not my cup of tea personally OP but if you like it, go for it!

Blondebakingmumma · 26/09/2019 06:25

I also like Rosalie

Doodledoom · 26/09/2019 06:42

It's a nice name. My friend has just called her baby Rosealynne, bit of a mouthful with the way it spelt, but the name definitely suits, they also call her Rosie for short.

myself2020 · 26/09/2019 06:47

Its a very popular name for goats where i come from. but that highly regional i would assume

MotherFuckingLanguages · 26/09/2019 06:49

Don’t really like it tbh reminds me of that character from Romeo and Juliet

Ponoka7 · 26/09/2019 06:51

I know two Carolines that i hate and because it Rhymes with that, it puts me off.

Coronation Street put me off Rosie. It's a bit too cutesy for my liking.

In Fasier, Roz's name was Roslinda. Rosaline has NNs to go with different personalities, which is always good.

My three DDs have less used names and so do my Grandchildren and they grow into their name. It becomes them.

So choise what you like. In regards to NNs, I'd allow family members to choose their own.

NoSauce · 26/09/2019 06:52

I don’t like it. I find it old fashioned, Rose is lovely though. She will get called Roz which I think is awful.

doublesheesh · 26/09/2019 06:54

OP don't be swayed by others. They all get used to a name and move on and then deny that they ever hated it!!

Ponoka7 · 26/09/2019 06:56

Rosalinda, that should have been.

Mookie81 · 26/09/2019 07:13

It’s lovely but perhaps a touch pretentious, though which would put me off.
Prefer Rosalind, or Rosamund

Like Rosamund isn't pretentious! Grin
