I suppose AIBU to put this here...but it IS the busiest area. I just thought...I'd see if there were any other MNrs in Oz who'd like a little chat thread together?

I’m also Irish. We are here on career breaks working agency nursing contracts (DH) which provide accommodation and relief teaching (me). We move around the country in rural/remote areas doing 4-12 week contracts and have been here 18 months so far which have been working mostly in Queensland and NSW thoughtravelling in between. We will be moving to WA in January when we come back from a Christmas visit to home.

Our career breaks are a maximum of 5 years so we plan to settle somewhere for year 4 before we decide to stay for good or move home. Currently I’m edging towards staying. And the lack of grey days is a huge part of that.

soft rain:o this made me think of a similar description of rain in the north of England, by Peter Tinniswood (of blessed memory) I think: "a soft mithering rain." Mithering, a word from my childhood, i.e. "stop mithering me" completely sums up the relentless, nagging quality of such rains.

There's nothing quite like it, at least not in Melbourne. I miss rain for my garden, but love not having endless leaden skies. Another aspect of having more sun is that so often when it rains you get rainbows, far more than in the UK.

bluetongue · 05/10/2019 05:44

Soft rain sounds delightful right now Smile

I’m hibernating inside today with my dog and watching rubbish TV because it’s 34 degrees in Adelaide and I don’t do hot weather. Sunday and a Monday are looking much nicer.

Despite all my whinging about Australia I’m well aware that financially, as a single person I’m better off here than in the UK. The thread about minimum wage jobs is pretty eye opening.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 05/10/2019 06:01

I'm also Irish and the 'soft rain' was half the reason we moved here! I was so bloody sick of relentless grey skies! I know its un Australian to complain about the rain here, and yes I know we need it, but I still hate rain, I had enough of it in Ireland to last me a lifetime!

Rowgtfc72 · 05/10/2019 06:21

My aussie relatives landed at heathrow ten minutes ago. Temperature in Perth on Wednesday was 22.
They're going to be so cold here aren't they?!
They've flown the non stop for the first time. Does anyone know if this will make a difference to jetlag?

SnowsInWater · 05/10/2019 06:28

Yes @Rowgtfc72 they will probably be cold, be nice to them if they are staying with you and make sure their bedding is warm. I went back to the UK one English "Summer" and was in Covent Garden with a friend who insisted we sat outside because it was such a lovely evening. I was genuinely freezing and kept my jacket on and she had the hump and kept talking about me overreacting!

Rowgtfc72 · 05/10/2019 06:35

Staying with the in laws.(who have dragged winter quilts out of the loft)Grin
We hosted them one May and were gobsmacked when they sat in their coats with the heating full on.
Sil said you can tell the new Brits in Perth because theyre happy to be on the beach when its 15 degrees!

StartupRepair · 05/10/2019 21:57

Don't know if jetlag is better or worse with the non-stop flights. I usually find it is worse coming from Europe back to Australia. But that may be because I'm coming back to work.

echt · 06/10/2019 00:51

I usually find it is worse coming from Europe back to Australia. But that may be because I'm coming back to work Apparently this is a thing, not imagined.

So daylight savings started to day, in Victoria at least. In addition to adjusting clocks, the day to check the smoke alarm batteries. In my case also the day to change the ceiling fans from winter to summer setting, and wipe off the accumulated dust while I'm up there.

CrazylazyJane · 06/10/2019 06:29

I'm really loving this thread thanks for starting it @HennyPennyHorror It's giving me such an insight into life in Oz.

I emailed some people we know in Australia to let them know that we'd booked our one way flights. We got lots of emails back saying how excited people were about our new 'adventure'. I may be getting a bit excited myself Grin

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 06/10/2019 07:00

Waves hello from rural western Victoria! (Moved from UK recently)

echt · 07/10/2019 08:25

Hello, Degustibus, welcome on board. If it's not too outing, which bit? Not stalking you or owt. Honest.:o As an example I'm happy to say I live in Bayside. Victoria is beautiful, isn't it?

I'm back at work after the school holidays, and as usual, after any break it's like being hit with a piece of 2 by 4, even when objectively it's been perfectly good. I could feel my voice going by the end of the day, but will be back at full screech soon.

beanaseireann · 07/10/2019 08:51

Scottish Mumsnetters have a section on Mumsnet called Scotsnet.
The Irish Mumsnetters have a section called Craicnet.

StartupRepair · 07/10/2019 09:22

Yes I was wondering where degustibus is located. I'm in the NW of Melbourne. DD back to school today with 2 week s to go before getting ready for final exams.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 07/10/2019 09:33

Not too far from Ararat (my parents have kindly given us a cottage on their farm). It's looking so beautiful at the moment, everything is so green and lush. (I know that won't last!). We have the most amazing view of the Grampians and some of the best sunsets in the world... have to admit though.... after 12 years in the UK I've become exceptionally fuss when it comes to sausages (still haven't found decent ones here...)

StartupRepair · 07/10/2019 10:17

I have driven from Melbourne to Adelaide every year for the last 23 years. The Grampians are a beautiful part of the world.

echt · 07/10/2019 10:30

You will have a long wait. While you can get a very good pack of bangers in any UK supermarket (top brand, not bargain), it is not the same here. The same goes for hams. I read a review of Christmas hams where all the Aussie top chefs said they were shite compared with a good range in the supermarket in the UK.

Inexplicable.

I've never been to the Grampians, indeed my furthest west was to buy my dog at Warnambool. I hear Robe is a really good place by the sea. This making me plan for my next year's travel.

BillHadersNewWife · 07/10/2019 10:36

I find bacon problematic here in Australia. It's just not the same. Totally given up on sausages...just never eat them any more!

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 07/10/2019 10:49

Must admit I'm tempted to buy some pigs and make my own (we have the space attached to the cottage which would be ideal...). Apparently there's a place out in the Dandenongs that sells good stuff...

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 07/10/2019 10:56

Warrnambool and Port Fairy are lovely - been going there since I was tiny! I have been to Robe on a family holiday around 1990ish, would love to go again.

PomPomtheGreat · 08/10/2019 03:22

Just to add to the MN Aussie map, I've been in the ACT for six years and absolutely love it. We became citizens after the first four years and don't expect to leave again if we can help it. Daughter at Uni Melb and sons went through the ANU. It's a dream come true for us.

Perfect weather here. Four real seasons and as many sunshine hours a year as Perth. Supposedly we have a winter, and everyone except us complains and puts on coats, but that's because the nights are very cold and often go to minus six or seven. However, the days are bright and sunny and it even feels warm enough to sit outside in ten degrees winter days because there's no humidity. I never wear a coat and rarely a sweater in the winter. It's similar to the Moroccan climate here for comparison. Likewise, 40 degrees in summer is quite bearable as it's bone dry. I've been far colder and hotter in QLD, VIC and NSQ than I've ever been in the ACT. It suits us perfectly.

Great state high schools and we're five minutes drive from all facilities, but also ten minutes from absolutely nothing at all and total silence. We live three houses away from the bush and can walk for miles over our mountain without meeting anyone while still enjoying all the amenities of a capital city.

I read so many threads on MN where Oz is slagged off relentlessly, but we've lived all around the world and Oz and NZ beat everywhere else hands down for us.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 08/10/2019 03:56

Hi Pompom! Yes the OZ/NZ slagging off posts really get to me; of course all countries aren't without their problems but some on here seem to have a real hate/disdain for either place 😑. Must admit though I'm enjoying living in a decent sized house again!

Canters15 · 08/10/2019 04:47

Can I join? I'm in Sydney, been here 9 months now and had my daughter here. Absolutely loving it so far and don't see us going back!

EagleSqueak · 08/10/2019 07:09

I’ve found edible sausages at South Melbourne Market. I don’t go often, but I buy 2kg every time just to stock the freezer! I can’t remember what the store is called, but it’s the deli at the bottom of the food court. They’re not as good as the ones my mum gets from her butcher in the UK, but they’re not bad!
I’m not enjoying the return to winter today ❄️❄️❄️

BaruFisher · 08/10/2019 08:05

I got brilliant Irish sausages when living in a tiny town called Babinda just south of Cairns. I miss them now!
The bacon leaves a lot to be desired too!
Looking forward to a full Irish breakfast in December when visiting home.
40 degrees here today. Sweltering!
