I suppose AIBU to put this here...but it IS the busiest area. I just thought...I'd see if there were any other MNrs in Oz who'd like a little chat thread together?

Bumping this one.

How we doing today?

aussieaussieaussieoioioi · 24/03/2020 04:52

Hi @echt

Things are a bit weird atm aren't they! Watching what's happening to the UK mnetters and wondering if we're following. My son's school is being shut.

Glitterbaby17 · 24/03/2020 04:56

In Melbourne! Still on a bridging visa while we wait for my partner visa (Husband is Aussie) so a bit nervous. Should be fine as we have been married for 6 years and have a 2 year old and another little one due in July but makes me very nervous in the current situation.

echt · 24/03/2020 04:57

I'm a teacher WTH to set up online teaching. I wonder too about if we follow the UK. VIC schools have the same responsibilities about vulnerable pupils in term-time as in the UK, though not to open during holidays.

As for policing social distance - can't remember when I last saw a police car that wasn't highway patrol, and never police officers outside the CBD. Not blaming them, by the way.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 24/03/2020 04:58

Totally weird.
Dd was upset that her school was closing but understand (as much as a 6 year old truely can)
We started some “school at home” today.
Dh is now working from home 3 days a week as they are rotating through the office so they can social distance.

Morrison is a smug prick who needs to let the states lead since he clearly can’t.

Morrison is a smug prick who needs to let the states lead since he clearly can’t

So true. He's dawdled and havered, while the states have plainly been champing at the bit to be more forward in action.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 24/03/2020 05:03

I saw the 1st advert for any social distance/hygiene or anything last night which is so far behind where is actually needs to be.
DH’s family live in Italy so we have been getting stories or intense boredom and fear.

Patsnpons · 24/03/2020 05:06

In WA, very strange times, schools here still open but choosing to keep mine home,

Mypathtriedtokillme · 24/03/2020 05:09

It’s the bushfire level incompetence all over again with more countrywide ramifications.
Nsw and Vic premiers are side stepping federal and trying to do the best for their states so it must be concerning and frustrating.
NSW needs much stronger measures. (I’m in Sydney)

LangSpartacusCleg · 24/03/2020 05:36

I was in my local Coles today and the toilet paper aisle was fully stocked...with nappies. And not a brand that they usually sell. Are they trying to tell us something?

That said, I’m getting almost daily emails from Coles, so their communication skills are a lot better that state or federal government.

groovergirl · 24/03/2020 05:37

Greetings from Melbourne on day one of the brought-forward school hols. My suburb has a lot of schools, and today it's eerily quiet; hardly anyone in the main street, and only a couple of runners on the oval when normally there are at least 100 kids hanging out after school. The local cinema has closed indefinitely.

I feel so sorry for the all tourist-town hoteliers who were hoping for a busy Easter to make up for the income nixed by the bushfires. Now they won't have it.

SD1978 · 24/03/2020 05:41

Melbourne too. I have been out the house today- just about to as I need to go to Nandos (50% off for health care workers) been on nights so not seen if people are listening- they weren't at the weekend and shopping centre was still pretty full.

SD1978 · 24/03/2020 05:41

Haven't been out I mean.

StartupRepair · 24/03/2020 05:44

I have a lot of time for the Victorian premier, Dan Andrew's. He is both decisive and compassionate.

StartupRepair · 24/03/2020 05:45

Hate that stray apostrophe.

groovergirl · 24/03/2020 06:04

@StartupRepair, I love Dan the Man in cool headmaster mode. Last night, telling us all Vic pubs would be shut: "That doesn't mean you invite all yer mates around to your place and get on the beers." I shouldn't laugh, I know this is serious, but that did put a smile on my dial. Wink

echt · 24/03/2020 06:15

I had to laugh at the anticipation that grog shops would not be on the non-essential shops left open. Mad rush at Dan Murphy's, apparently. And breathe. Apparently we can drink this one out. It would be un-Australian to do otherwise. Smile

groovergirl · 24/03/2020 06:30

Well, my trusty local BWS was definitely open an hour ago when I went looking (in vain) for TP at the Woolies next door. We can't wipe our bums, but we can toast to the good health and survival of Australia with whatever tipple we fancy! Wine

groovergirl · 24/03/2020 06:38

@SD1978 Good to know Nando's is looking after our precious health care workers with a big discount. I hope you and your colleagues stay happy and well nourished. Star

mychickensnameiscamilla · 24/03/2020 06:46

South Aussies here. I can not fathom why Morrison has dug in on the schools. Surely he can look at the trajectory of the virus and decisions being made in the UK and think we can learn and jump ahead a little here.

Most schools in my area are running at less than 50 % attendance anyway but all the oldies are out and about at the shopping centre in higher numbers than normal. I'm really hoping not but it could be ripping though this area in the next couple of weeks.

Cordial11 · 24/03/2020 07:01

Perth here!

I have the option now to WFH or choose to continue in work, should I stay home because I can? I think it seems silly to expose myself for no reason but alot of people don't seem worried! I don't want to be tarred as over reacting but I know i'm not! Sad

groovergirl · 24/03/2020 07:13

@Cordial11, If you can work from home, I suggest you do. I've been WFH for seven years and can't remember when I last had a cold or flu -- maybe a decade ago? I don't think we can over-react in this situation; the sooner Covid 19 loses traction, the sooner we all get back to normal. Mind you, it seems WA has not been hit as badly as the eastern states.

StartupRepair · 24/03/2020 07:44

We've just permission to work from home. I was out the door in a flash today with my arms full of files.

echt · 24/03/2020 09:16

Scroll down on this link to see how many people who have so far been linked to/infected/by the 2700 passengers who were let off the Ruby Princess last week in Sydney:

Not scaremongering but scared.

aussieaussieaussieoioioi · 24/03/2020 09:25

Yep can't understand Morrison. Useless dickhead. Would love NZ's prime minister.

Weeks ago they were telling us to stop worrying there was plenty of toilet paper to go around, we aren't going to run out. Haven't seen my local shops stocked with even one packet since. Meat is always cleared too, no rice, no pasta. Better get to the bottle shop before that's cleared too!
