AIBU over car DP got us?

Hi, all

I need to know how U you think I am over this.

So this Saturday my DP went to get us a new car (secondhand), I did not go with him as I had plans and was not that interested tbh. He sorted our last one out, which we scrapped last week as was too much to repair (head gasket)... It was a fiesta 54 plate.

So Saturday I went shopping with my friend, which was lovely! Had such a nice day as I had not seen her for awhile. Anyway half way through the day (about 1pm) I get a text from DP. "Got us a car sorted". I texted back without a thought to ask which one. I said "fab babe, we were just talking about you lol". That was it.

I get home about 8pm, feeling v relaxed and happy. So there I am telling DP about my day and he tells me about his. Yes the car I say let's see it!!

I go outside with DP and he points to it! I laughed my head off thinking he was taking the piss. He wasn't.

It's a blue 1989 escort, with one wheel trim and cassette radio. Why?! Just why?!

I don't like it, don't want it. It's my own fault for being so relaxed about buying a car and leaving it up to him, I know that but AIBU to be annoyed?

I have not said anything to him, because I don't know what to say. It's bought, taxed, insured. WWUD? Do I throw a fit and say take it back? Do I yell at him for not first asking to buy such a old car? Do I just live with it and get over it. It's been two days and I still feel so pissed off at him!! And myself.

We share one car, paid for out a joint account. We agreed on a budget, and yes he stuck to it. I really am not a car snob, I really did not think I cared as long as it got me from a-b but clearly I do. I just don't understand why that one. It's a tatty mess. How is it even still running!!!

It will also say the model type on the logbook and in the service book if it came with the car. People are interested because if it's something like an XR3i it's way more desirable, and hence more valuable, than a basic non sporty model.

If you put the registration number into the DVLA website, you can get the complete mileage at MOT history for the last few years at least, a car that age, the earlier MOTs will predate computerisation. Mileage is also interesting, because on rare occasions, cars like this have been lightly used, and might have a really low mileage, adding to the value.

I understand why you don't want the car, which is why people are suggesting that you sell it and buy something more suitable. And if was worth more than £800, it would be easy to sell at a profit which would mean either a bigger budget for a different car, or a replacement car, plus a treat, or money to put into savings.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/09/2019 16:26

Of course, it's unlikely to be an XR3i due to non alloy wheels, but sometimes they get swapped, if someone wanted to sell the wheels or run the car with cheaper tyres.

But there's a few of us still itching to know what car it is.

NemoIsLost · 23/09/2019 16:36

Oh @DrivingTat I'm sorry but this has made me chuckle.
It remind me of My dear dad, he once bought a really old mini, which had a boot so small we couldn't fit any shopping in it. The car almost did a wheelie when we went to Tesco!
But his piece de la resistance was going to auction and buying a combine harvester!!! We lived in a terraced house ffs GrinGrin

Mooncupblues · 23/09/2019 16:39

Can’t believe some of you are still asking her the model after all the stropping she’s done about being asked exactly that Blush

BiBiBirdie · 23/09/2019 16:42

1989 Escorts in good nick can, although I've no idea why, go for silly money on ebay.

Blue, 1990, basic spec (wheel trims etc) £3000

Chances are you could turn it over and buy something much your your taste with A budget 3 times what you had before he went shopping.

Anyway, people keep trying to help and being told to go away, just thought it was worth one more punt and making you see this could actually be a really positive outcome for you.

DrivingTat · 23/09/2019 17:00

@BarbaraofSevile I made this thread to vent and have done so. I feel better. I have also taken the advice on board. I will be getting a aux tape and bloody fluffy dice to piss DP off lol. I have also loved all the jokes, they have really made me smile.

As for the stupid model, I have already said I don't know but it's poverty. I would have to go out and look at mileage and reg, as I don't know them off by heart. It's been two day.

Yes it probably did come with a logbook. It came with a lot of shit. I told DP to put it in the cupboard, I have not looked at any of it! It would take time as there is a lot of paper work, also old tax disks. I will go through it all at a later date an bin the shit that's not needed. I mean really old tatty tax disks, why? I can't stand clutter. Same with the tatty parts it came with, they are in the shed now but will be being took to the tip. I am sure DP will object but I am not having my lovely shed filled with old tatty car bits if they are not needed.

I really don't like the car, can't stand it right now. I am not going to look up crap on it because if I find something I don't like, I am going to blow. And yes on a serious note, I will smash it with a hammer. I really don't think just how angry I am over the whole thing is coming through on this thread. I am so angry at myself, at him, at the car. I just fucking know the shit box is going to break down at somepoint. I feel stuck because I am right now, yes we can sell it later on but not right now as I need the car.

Hilarious.. just think how many people were conceived on the backseat of it! Majority of whom are now old enough to vote!

DrivingTat · 23/09/2019 17:13

Thank you @Newsheet it's nice to hear that maybe DP did not get ripped off after all. I will look at the model and the like at a later date. But I did say up thread that it is indeed basic.

I am just so angry inside about it all. I know from the outside looking in it's hard to see the "problem" because I can just bin it off. But it's the whole thing not just the car itself. I am so angry at myself for being so stupid as to think it would not be a old car we were getting. I should have made him tell me. I should have picked with him. But I have made my bed now. It will be sold on at somepoint or scrapped. But for now we are stuck and I think that's just adding to it all. If I could get away with not using it I would.

I keep telling myself all the goodpoints about it to try and make it seem not too bad but then I know when I start it up it will fuckin fume me out with the stink. I will get the aux tape, the dice, and new wheel trims. But it's still going to be a tat box.

Again thank you. It's nice to see it will all being well sell on without to much of a problem when the time is right. Smile

Why would your DP do this? It makes no sense at all. You have children and need something safe and economical for driving them around and popping to the shops so why would he buy this gas guzzling deathtrap?! Has he recently taken out a big life insurance policy on you OP?

It's so ridiculous; he might as well have come home with a motorbike and sidecar.

italianfiat · 23/09/2019 17:31

Get a Bluetooth speaker and connect it to your phone for music.

ForalltheSaints · 23/09/2019 17:34

Has anyone asked if you have got the furry dice with it?

AdobeWanKenobi · 23/09/2019 17:35

@DrivingTat

I will go through it all at a later date an bin the shit that's not needed. I mean really old tatty tax disks, why? I can't stand clutter

That 'clutter' is the history of the vehicle and adds value to the car.

NewPapaGuinea · 23/09/2019 17:39

It's not a cosworth is it? They are pretty expensive, hold value well and and are good runners.

An Escort Cosworth would not have wheel trims and would be AT LEAST £50k

Bluntness100 · 23/09/2019 17:40

A thirty year old car as the main family car isn't a wise decision, especially if money is tight. Plus I also get not wanting to drive about in it.

To be fair for eight hundred quid you weren't getting anything good, and maybe it was the best he could find within a reasonable distance, within budget. Ie mileage, documentation etc.

Zampa · 23/09/2019 18:07

These could be decent spare parts which will cost money to buy again. If you can spare the space, do keep them.

pooopypants · 23/09/2019 18:37

You're being superficial and pathetic OP. Its just a car, not a fashion statement. Grow up.

rebbonk · 23/09/2019 19:00

Please do not throw any paperwork away. That is the provenance of the car and adds to its value. Yes, even old tax discs!

Unicornsbumhole · 23/09/2019 19:20

What's with all the old car bashing? My old 1969 morris minor ran better and had fewer issues than nearly all of the 'modern' crap that I had since

LemonGingerCakes · 23/09/2019 20:00

What's with all the old car bashing?

My modern car has a reinforced cage, which is shaped for maximum impact protection. I have passenger and driver airbags, plus side curtain airbags. It is low tax due to low emissions. There are seatbelts all round - new, wider than older and no stretched by age. It has anti-submarine seats. The air-con makes summer driving pleasant etc etc.

LemonGingerCakes · 23/09/2019 20:00

Not to mention abs breaks.

Blueoasis · 23/09/2019 20:05

The chances of it actually being worth anything aren't good from the way op is describing it.

She's saying it looks like crap, smells bad, had tons of clutter in it, probably not been cared for in the slightest, might even be covered in rust.

A classic car is only worth something if its in basically mint original condition. And since op only had £800 to spend, what on earth makes you think she can afford to spend thousands bringing it up to spec? Grin Or even has the time?

The car is worth what they paid, unless they did buy it off a complete idiot which is unlikely these days thanks to the Internet. Can fully get why she is pissed off, it's not like in its condition that it will be reliable.

Well - I guess that depends how you read the posts.

The “clutter” is because someone has kept all the replaces parts, paperwork and old tax discs.

To me, that suggests a previous owner who cared for the car.

People on here are so negative. I reckon it’s worth way more than 800 with a tiny bit of effort put into putting it in front of the right potential buyers.

AdobeWanKenobi · 23/09/2019 20:25

Not even slightly true. People pay thousands for a chassis.
Over time cars have alloys changed out, resprays, badges are lost. You have no more idea what this car is and its value than I do.

You see this picture? Its a mini. It sold for £20k in that condition. Classic cars can be valuable in all conditions.

AIBU over car DP got us?
GabsAlot · 24/09/2019 00:12
