Doctor lecturing me about smoking weed? Feeling judged.

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 16:58

I had an appointment regarding my anxiety and doctor asked if I’d considered any other form of treatment.

I responded that I had considered CBD oil.

I got an extremely dirty look and told it’s not regulated and she would not be giving me a prescription for it.

Then went on about smoking cannabis.

Firstly I never asked or expected a prescription for it.

Also smoking cannabis is nothing like having a few drops of CBD oil - afaik

I felt really and very wrongly judged.

@Catworrier, thanks for your post. I go through stages of mad restless leg and had no idea CBD oil might help. I shall have a gander at what's in Holland and Barrett and maybe give it a go.

The thing with CBT is not only is it not a cure all it's also not a catch all. It really just doesn't work for some people and while I found it helped me a little bit a couple of years ago it was very surface level and the underlying stuff remains. That said it was a million times better than psychotherapy which I had to end when in a moment of silence because I was exhausted from talking about myself , I broke the silence to say "Oh, I see you've taken down the painting you had there" and my therapist actually said "how does that make you feel?" .

@grumiosmum my pleasure, I hope you get some sleep. Insomnia is miserable

MaxNormal · 23/09/2019 08:26

CBT definitely doesn't work for everyone. I tried it, it was a really good way to feel massive amounts of irritation and frustration but that was about it.

C8H10N4O2 · 23/09/2019 10:05

I’d judge anyone using illegal drugs.

That's interesting. Of what possible relevance is it to this thread and the OP?

The GP just went on to talk around a subject

A GP who doesn't know the difference between CBD oil and smoking cannabis is perfectly capable of writing in the notes that the advice given included avoiding cannabis due to patient suggestion.

GPs are human - many are great, most will be at least competent, a percentage will be ill informed and allow their own prejudices/ignorance to influence their advice.

OP: see your regular GP when you can to discuss this rationally.

Frankly I'd be getting pretty snippy with PPs who apparently can't read even the opening post before they jump to ill informed conclusions.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 23/09/2019 10:29

Another issue with CBD oil not being regulated is that it can be sold with homeopathic —useless— quantities of the active ingredient.

If you are considering it OP, check out the strength of what you are buying, or you will end up with a placebo.

longwayoff · 23/09/2019 10:49

She's your Doctor, concerned with your HEALTH and has given advice she believes to be in your best interests. If you dont want a doctor's opinion, pop down to the local pub and ask around there, you'll find things more to your liking.

C8H10N4O2 · 23/09/2019 10:55

She's your Doctor, concerned with your HEALTH

But not enough to listen to the patient in her care. As PP have said - her advice was akin to warning people not to take heroin because they have have opiate based pain relief. At best it was ignorant.

Catshavebellybuttons · 23/09/2019 11:04

@sisforscrabble YANBU - it appears your Dr either misunderstood what you were asking, or more worryingly is actually ignorant about a licensed over the counter supplement that is sold in many pharmacies now. Maybe try and clarify this with them because you don't want it on your medical records that you are using or are considering using illicit drugs.

Please ignore previous posters who either haven't read your original post, or are themselves ignorant about what CBD oil actually is, but just can't pass up an opportunity to put someone down when they are already feeling vulnerable.

I can understand why your GPs response made you feel unfairly judged. Given the reason for your appointment in the first place it was not a helpful, appropriate or proportionate response from them. Some GPs are just shit really and aren't suited to the job.

Hope you find something that works to help manage your anxiety soon Flowers

PuzzledObserver · 23/09/2019 14:51

Everyone has sparkling halos here and it's the only place I've met people who haven't dabbled with anything even in their younger years.

I suppose it depends on your social circle - I’ve never taken an illegal substance (never even been offered one) and I’m not aware that my friends have either. My husband has never smoked a cigarette or drunk alcohol.

QueenofPain · 23/09/2019 14:55

CBD really heightens my anxiety, so it’s not a miracle for everyone. I’ve tried low dose oil and high dose gummies, etc and not of it has helped.

Usernumbers1234 · 23/09/2019 15:03

“I am doing”

You really aren’t OP. And forget the CBD, you need something significantly stronger to chill you out from what I can see

SpamChaudFroid · 23/09/2019 15:11

GPs seem to really have it in for CBD oil. I have had one describe it as "snake oil" when my blood pressure returned to normal after several years of being raised. I told him I'd recently begun to take CBD, and he sneered.

Dutch1e · 23/09/2019 15:50

Usernumbers1234 that was an unkind and pretty sneery thing to say.

JaneJeffer · 23/09/2019 15:56

That doctor is an idiot.

slipperywhensparticus · 23/09/2019 22:24

I feel compelled to point out that drs have to be good at remembering a health of symptoms illnesses medicines etc and maybe there knowledge of otc stuff isnt as comprehensive?

I've had my medical condition for over 20 years drs have asked me for advice on my usual treatment protocols because I live with it and apparently I'm rare in my area

Mxyzptlk · 23/09/2019 22:39

maybe there knowledge of otc stuff isnt as comprehensive?

So maybe they should admit they know nothing about it, instead of talking rubbish?

Babysharkisanearworm · 23/09/2019 23:23

Told mine about cbd and he didn't bat an eyelid.
Anything that helps and doesn't harm is good with me!

PhilCornwall1 · 24/09/2019 04:40

I know how you feel - I always get a lecture about smoking (cigarettes rather than weed) but the doctors are obviously correct to point out that it's bad for me, I don't blame them for it

I got this from my Consultant in hospital, until I saw him outside having a fag and called him a fucking hypocrite. It wasn't ever mentioned again.

CanuckBC · 27/09/2019 02:39

CBD oil can be made from Cannabis or Hemp. Mine is mad from cannabis plant not hemp🤷🏼‍♀️ Then again, it’s legal where I am from.

It has helped my anxiety, depression and PTSD significantly.

I also have dried cannabis and other oils that have THC in it. Both that have high levels of THC and others with equal amount of THC and CBD oil. I haven’t found any that have increased my anxiety.

It is trial and error as any prescription medication. On anti-depressant will help one person and will be another’s worst nightmare.

There are two main different types, satvia and indica. Indica is the one that makes you sleepy, it’s known as in da couch. Satvia is known as the munchy keep you awake one. Both have different qualities that help with different things. Within the two there are different strains grown to help with specific things. Sleep, pain, etc. You can get different strains depending on your needs.

I am attaching photos of what each does from my medical supplier.

HaileySherman · 27/09/2019 03:02

Sounds like your medical doctor is not knowledgeable in holistic approaches. This is not at all unusual. CBD oil is supposed to help anxiety. I know in the US that oils, etc marketed as CBD has to have less than 0.3% THC, and most have none at all. The cannabis plant has at least dozens of different cannabinoids, CBD and THC being 2 of them. THC is the element that gives the high and can be associated with paranoia and anxiety. I know a lot of people know this but clearly a lot of the respondents here don't, which is why I mentioned it. CBD was a godsend when my dog had cancer recently. I don't believe we would have gotten as long of quality time with him without it. Since he passed, I've been using a few dropperfuls at night to help sleep (using the leftover from him) and it helps. I'd say it's worth a try. If you feel judged by your doctor then don't discuss it with them in my opinion.

FunkyKingston · 27/09/2019 03:02

Well done you.

I'm sure this will be a terrific comfort to you as those smoking related illnesses kick in. I'm sure you'll enjoy telling it between gasps on your oxygen mask.

Because he doesn't practice what he preaches, doesn't make the message that you should give up for the good of your health and those around you less valid because a flawed human told you.
