Doctor lecturing me about smoking weed? Feeling judged.

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 16:58

I had an appointment regarding my anxiety and doctor asked if I’d considered any other form of treatment.

I responded that I had considered CBD oil.

I got an extremely dirty look and told it’s not regulated and she would not be giving me a prescription for it.

Then went on about smoking cannabis.

Firstly I never asked or expected a prescription for it.

Also smoking cannabis is nothing like having a few drops of CBD oil - afaik

I felt really and very wrongly judged.

For anyone confused..

Cannabis - smoke it, THC in it makes you high, contains minimal CBD, illegal

CBD Oil - drop some on your tongue, No THC so can't make you high, contains CBD, available in healthfood shops and definitely not illegal.

They come from the same plant. That is the only similarity.

Mabelface · 22/09/2019 17:14

Oh ffs, cbd oil is a derivative of cannabis which has the thc removed. It's high thc which causes cannabis. It's absolutely not the same as having a joint.

Op, I can absolutely understand why you're pissed off. It's not as if you told her you were planning on skinning up a huge bifter in front of her.

Maybe ask for your post to amended op

Mabelface · 22/09/2019 17:16

Anxiety, not cannabis.

Morgan12 · 22/09/2019 17:16

So you don't smoke it?

RainOrSun · 22/09/2019 17:16

I think the answers above probably reflect what the Dr thought they heard - you were off to roll a joint - tho that doesn't make sense with the prescription comment.

However, if it was something you are considering, I'd either go with trying CBD, or with the GPs suggestion. Trying both together wont help you know which (if either) is working.

TeaStory · 22/09/2019 17:16

YANBU. It’s bloody annoying to have someone assume you’re going to do something you’re not and then give you a load of shit for their assumption.

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 17:17

Maybe I did confuse my OP - I should have said

I got an extremely dirty look and told it’s not regulated and she would not be giving me a prescription for it.

Then she (the doctor) went on about smoking cannabis

I never mentioned smoking cannabis.

CBD oil and cannabis is not the same! CBD oil has been life changing for me, I do not need to take huge amount of morphine/opiods when a few drops of CBD oil works wonders. There is a lot of benefit to the oil and shouldn't be automatically dismissed outright

ShitFuckBastardBollocks · 22/09/2019 17:17

The GP was talking shit. CBD is nothing like cannabis.

Cannabis contains THC which is the high.

CBD contains NO THC. There is NO HIGH.

It's 100% legal.

ShitFuckBastardBollocks · 22/09/2019 17:18

People are so thick when it comes to cannabis and its biproducts.

Educate yourselves.

Nikhedonia · 22/09/2019 17:18

YANBU, OP. Weird that the Dr said she wasn't giving you a prescription, as if you can't just purchase CBC oil from a high street shop.

It's THC that gets you high, not CBD. 🙄

Queenoftheashes · 22/09/2019 17:19

Jfc I get why you’re annoyed. People smoking weed are getting high from THC which comes from the same plant as cbd oil but the cbd unlike thc is not psychoactive and not an illegal drug. Not the same thing at all. It would have been more relevant for the doctor to start lecturing you about drinking camomile tea for its calming effects and that not being available on prescription.

Queenoftheashes · 22/09/2019 17:20

I mean you can get hemp milk from Waitrose is anyone shrieking about that?!

AutumnRose1 · 22/09/2019 17:21

I wonder if this GP even knows you can buy CBD.

did she give any help btw?

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 17:21

I’ve seen Hemp Water in Sainsbury’s ... obviously they must be exempt from selling “cannabis” to the public.

CanuckBC · 22/09/2019 17:22

If it helps, I am Canadian where Cannabis is now legal. I take CBD oil with a very very low amount of THC in it. The low amount of THC helps activate the CBD. I forget the amounts but it’s negligible.

I take it for numerous reasons but partly for my Anxiety/PTSD/Depression. It has definitely helped me level out. I would highly recommend giving it a try. It won’t hurt🤷🏼‍♀️

Mine was prescribed by a medical dr, ironic, eh

Tableclothing · 22/09/2019 17:23

CBD oil is not regulated, not safety-tested in the way that any NICE-recommended medication must be... Different brands will contain different substances, not just CBD. It's derived from different sources. The long term effects are not well understood. Some people do experience side effects but we don't have the data to say with confidence what they are. We don't have a thorough understanding of how it may interact with other medications. Dosage is anyone's guess. No doctor who cares about your well-being is going to recommend you experiment with it to treat a MH problem, especially as it sounds like there may be other evidence-based treatments you haven't tried yet.

JasonPollack · 22/09/2019 17:23

I have found CBD very helpful for anxiety. Expensive in Holland and Barrett though, much better strength and value online- message me if you like and I will link you to the website I use.

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 17:24

I wonder if this GP even knows you can buy CBD.

did she give any help btw?

No she just gave me a horrified look and said it’s not regulated and she would not be giving me a prescription for it.

Then said about smoking cannabis.

OP posts:
LittleLongDog · 22/09/2019 17:24

So you said you'd considered taking a cannabis then.

Some of these answers are hilarious.

CBD oil (eg from Holland and Barrett) is not the same a smoking cannabis.

The GP didnt understand and gave OP a lecture about something she’s not even doing.

OP, YANBU.

ilovesooty · 22/09/2019 17:26

So I did misread initially. My apologies.

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 17:26

Which is exactly why I said I am CONSIDERING taking it. As I can and am doing my own research before just taking it.

hopefulhalf · 22/09/2019 17:27

Loads of people use cannabis (the illegal kind) to self medicate- with at best equivicol results. I thought CBD was for chronic pain so unlikely ro be efficacious for anxiety.
