Doctor lecturing me about smoking weed? Feeling judged.

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 16:58

I had an appointment regarding my anxiety and doctor asked if I’d considered any other form of treatment.

I responded that I had considered CBD oil.

I got an extremely dirty look and told it’s not regulated and she would not be giving me a prescription for it.

Then went on about smoking cannabis.

Firstly I never asked or expected a prescription for it.

Also smoking cannabis is nothing like having a few drops of CBD oil - afaik

I felt really and very wrongly judged.

But your GP was correct. CBD oil is unregulated and there is no decent medical evidence for it's use for anxiety. So she couldn't recommend it. And she couldn't prescribe it. Why are you annoyed that she didnt recommend it?

Did you even read the thread?

I never asked for a prescription

You sound SO hostile OP. Not sure why

Not sure hostile is the right word, I've read the comments they're a bit frustrating people don't understand the difference between CBD oil and smoking cannabis. Op isn't a smoker of it.

Op sounds like Dr was a bit confused between the difference, I wouldn't take it personally. You should of really pointed out its a suppliemnt oil you can even get in Holland and Barratt now (my nan buys it for arthritis) and they were incorrect about what you use.

I am actually surprised on the comments on here (and from your Dr), with how many people don't understand it. Especially after all the press it gets after certain states in America making it legal to actually smoke or for the oil with medical cards and Amsterdam TV programmes about it helping conditions too.

Even Dr's in the UK are giving it to chronic chrones disease patients ect, that poor little boy who experienced fits and epilepsy too.

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 19:52

Maybe you do need to smoke a spliff, you're awfully chippy and pissed off and nippy hmm

I know there’s the unwritten rule on AIBU that the poster must never answer back because then they get the usual insults of

  • you sound lovely Hmm
  • do you have anger issues

Or with you chippy, nippy, pissed off

It’s frustrating to write an OP when the first few comments don’t understand the post.

Or then saying well you should have said this because I would have! - well good for you but I don’t have a time machine,

What happened - happened. I can’t change it or change how I reacted to it in that moment.

I do know someone who is prescribed it (the nephew of a friend) and before it he was having fits constantly, in hospital all the time. He’s severely disabled and cannot speak.

Since taking it he has improved massively. It’s not a miracle cure, but it’s lessened his pain which can only be a positive.

Hey OP
Can't be arsed to read all the comments on here for the lack of knowledge of CBD products.
CBD oil is great for your mental health. It's naturally calming, not full of toxins, and NOT weed - it's legal!!!
I take it for my restless legs and it's brilliant!
Speak to another dr. Maybe ask if there's someone with experience of CBD oil.
Wish you the best!!!
P.S it's great for your skin too

Very true. What you can do, however, is stop biting everyone’s head off. You’ve said you were feeling a certain way and everyone has responded to that. Not all of us have misunderstood what you were referring to and some have given you very sensible advice about contacting your gp to amend your records. If you want support on here, you’ll get it every single time. But this is not the way to go about it.

silverystream · 22/09/2019 20:02

With a level head, though, op, things aren't that bad! You stated, clearly you were considering taking CBD oil. The doctor showed disapproval and went onto talk about cannabis. Linked in a tenuous sort of way. But you didn't say you smoke cannabis. Some people do / have in the past and their doctors will know. Doctors see all sorts of people through their doors. You haven't admitted to anything more outrageous than considering buying something from the likes of Holland & Barretts or Boots! Chalk it down to experience and try to see the funny side! GrinHonestly nothing will come of it!

MissPepper8 · 22/09/2019 20:04

@sisforscrabble

Yes this, it doesn't cure, it's more something for pain management.

My DF has really bad chrones and is considering asking for it. He's had operations, steroids and is really struggling eating with the pain. It's been shown in an American study cbd oil can help with pain management.

If it's shown it helps I'm not against it.

silverystream · 22/09/2019 20:05

I honestly think there is no need! Op was quite clear concerning what she said to her GP regarding CBD oil. The GP just went on to talk around a subject.

Tableclothing · 22/09/2019 20:06

Can any of the people arguing that CBD reduces anxiety symptoms link to a double-blind randomised controlled trial? Without proper evidence there is no reason to believe that it is any better than a placebo.

OP, what treatments have you tried for your anxiety so far?

Sn0tnose · 22/09/2019 20:07

I’d agree with you Silvery. I wouldn’t think it was necessary either, but the OP sounded a little concerned about it upthread, so it might put her mind at rest.

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 20:12

Just citalopram

Tableclothing · 22/09/2019 20:15

Try CBT.

pottedshrimps · 22/09/2019 20:24

CBD doesn't contain the THC which cannabis does and the THC is what can cause the anxiety. CBD doesn't cause a high or trigger any mental health disorders.

pottedshrimps · 22/09/2019 20:27

GPs aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer.

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 20:32

Try CBT

No no no and a million more times no.

I had therapy years ago and it didn’t do a single thing for me.

CBT gets pushed on me by every single doctor.

I don’t want to be shoved on a 6 month waiting list for something that will not help.

OP posts:
AliceAbsolum · 22/09/2019 20:33

CBT not CBD 😅 Google iapt.

CorBlimeyGovenor · 22/09/2019 20:39

The Dr was right to lecture you as, although different, the two are connected and some people do use cannabis to relax, although it causes other problems. Yoga and CBT are proven far more effective. And side effect free.

CorBlimeyGovenor · 22/09/2019 20:47

When you had therapy years ago, was it specifically CBT that you had? It didn't work for me first time round. It's not a quick fix. You have to work hard at it in the same way as if you were going to lose weight/get physically fit. You have to keep doing it to maintain it. Third time round and i connected with it. The Calm App is also really good for anxiety and helps. You get out what you put in though. A great book is The Feeling Good Handbook by Dr Burns. CBT based practical book used by NHS/priory etc. If you don't want to wait for apt on NHS (my experience was that it was a three month waiting list) and Don't want to pay privately, then the book is a great alternative for working through things.

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 20:49

CBD oil comes from hemp.

As I said previously I’ve seen Hemp water in Sainsbury’s. Should the shop assistant lecture each customer who buys it?

bbcessex · 22/09/2019 20:59

YANBU, OP.

Your doctor is obviously not very clued up.. do you have other options at the surgery?

My DD, 15, takes CBD as part of a raft of medications for her chronic illness. All her specialists (4 of them) know she takes it - it's on her notes and they approve of it although I buy it myself, not prescribed.

DD uses for pain & muscle relaxation OP but it won't harm you - give it a go for a few weeks and see - DD takes 3 of the Jacob Hooey capsules each night.

On a side note, I've take Citalopram for years for anxiety and I swear by it - maybe try and find another doctor and have a proper chat?

Dixiegirl77 · 22/09/2019 21:05

OP I use cbd oil capsules & I vape it if my anxiety is bad,I found the cbd far better than meds the gp has given me (RRMS) sadly many doctors refuse to see how cbd & cannabis can help, its slowly changing but will take time.

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 21:10

On a side note, I've take Citalopram for years for anxiety and I swear by it - maybe try and find another doctor and have a proper chat?

I was on it a few years ago and it worked great.

Back on it now since January and I’ve just not had that same result. I completely stopped taking it (which I know is wrong) and felt no different.

OP posts:
CorBlimeyGovenor · 22/09/2019 21:16

@sisforscrabble

Yes, I am aware that the two are different. As I have said. But they are connected insofar as both are alternative therapies and I know of people who have tried both. The Dr also clearly knew the distinction between the two, hence by telling you that the oil is unregulated. And she was right to tell you that it wasn't available on prescription/wouldn't be prescribing it, because it would not be an unreasonable assumption to make that, as you had bought it up, you may have hoping to have it prescribed. Drs have to deal with so many patients who will have tried all sorts of things to combat anxiety, so it makes perfect sense for her to say what works/is regulated and prove and what isn't. I think that you have been oversensitive and taken it to heart. It sounds to me like it was a fairly standardized thing for her to trot out.

Goingonagondola · 22/09/2019 21:57

CBT is great and very well proven for anxiety. Again, you’re ever so hostile, even to helpful suggestion.
