Doctor lecturing me about smoking weed? Feeling judged.

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 16:58

I had an appointment regarding my anxiety and doctor asked if I’d considered any other form of treatment.

I responded that I had considered CBD oil.

I got an extremely dirty look and told it’s not regulated and she would not be giving me a prescription for it.

Then went on about smoking cannabis.

Firstly I never asked or expected a prescription for it.

Also smoking cannabis is nothing like having a few drops of CBD oil - afaik

I felt really and very wrongly judged.

Sounds like a bit of confusion on doctors part, not really worth starting a whole thread about ffs

User24689 · 22/09/2019 17:27

I think the reason for some of these responses is that the OP said "judged for smoking cannabis" in the title of the thread. So people are assuming that in addition to the enquiry about CBD oil, she is also smoking cannabis and that is what the doctor has judged. I was confused about this from reading the OP.

Tableclothing · 22/09/2019 17:28

What other treatments have you tried?

GlacindaTheTroll · 22/09/2019 17:28

The doctor will definitely know CBD can be bought. She has only said she cannot prescribe it (correct, because of prescribing guidelines)

Doctor then widens conversation, thinks of other angles, and cautions against cannabis in other forms (as they are known to have significant potential to worsen anxiety)

I think I'd rather have the doctor who thinks round the first issue presented. Indeed, for many things it's best practice, isn't it?

GibbonLover · 22/09/2019 17:30

So you said you'd considered taking a cannabis then

Possibly the funniest thing I've read on the internet in a while Grin Grin

slipperywhensparticus · 22/09/2019 17:30

The dr made leap taking your train of thought further than you had gone but I have to say from personal experience of the people I meet they say they tried the oil it didn't work so they tried weed maybe she has heard it all before

I personally do not need a lecture on drug taking.

I’m an adult that doesn’t live under a rock.

I especially do not need a drug lecture when I’m not even taking any,

as a doctor she was obliged to raise this with you.

As a doctor she should have listened to her patient instead of jumping to conclusions about a completely different product.

Considering the amount of discussion both in and out of the journals on both medicinal cannabis (legal in limited circumstances) and CBD oil (high street remedy) its odd she was unable to distinguish between the two.

There is some evidence CBD oil can help wtih anxiety - the OP was quite right to raise it for discussion before proceeding. Unfortunately her GP didn't listen to her.

MaxNormal · 22/09/2019 17:35

I'd have been annoyed as well. I take CBD and my gp and consultants know I do, they all seem to think it's not a bad idea.

C8H10N4O2 · 22/09/2019 17:38

One other thought OP - you might want to check what was recorded in your notes if the doctor can't tell the difference between a psychoactive drug and a high street remedy

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 17:40

Confused I never even considered that.

So potentially I now have it in my medical notes that I am or considering smoking cannabis? Fab.

justasking111 · 22/09/2019 17:42

Our surgery has an in-house chemist, they are selling CBD oil. I think your GP needs a chat with someone about the difference.

Tweetingmagpie · 22/09/2019 17:42

“Taking cannabis” 🤣🤣🤣

HeavenlyEyes · 22/09/2019 17:43

For what it is worth I think CBD is a great choice for anxiety. Please don't buy from Holland and Barrett though. Try CBD Brothers or Simply CBD.

And I have heard of GPs recommending CBD oil.

Teddybear45 · 22/09/2019 17:47

The CBD you find in the UK (without prescription) is pretty much useless. Not strong enough for anything except a massage oil. You’ll just be wasting your money. Things like rescue remedy etc might be slightly better but to be honest if your anxiety is bad then nothing will work better than meds.

TryingAndFailing39 · 22/09/2019 17:49

There are some complete twats early on this thread OP who seem to be deliberately misunderstanding you, judging you for something you’ve clearly never done and possibly deliberately trying to make you feel worse Sad
Could you go into the health food shop and ask about the products? Or even speak to a pharmacist?
Maybe see a different gp and just check that you haven’t got ‘cannabis user’ incorrectly on your notes!
I have anxiety too and it’s awful. I’ve found beta blockers really useful as well as talking therapy Flowers

Dutch1e · 22/09/2019 17:49

Cannabis is pretty widely used and studied where I live (the username gives it away). Cannabis is a catch-all word for weed, with hemp and marijuana being the two kind of outdated words for "no high" and "high."

CBD oil can be made from any strain. Personally the one that makes you high also makes me anxious and paranoid, and I think that's the one some posters upthread mean when they talk about side-effects.

CBD oil should really either have a 1:1 balance of THC:CBD or go toward the CBD end.

My favourite plant is a Dutch strain called Charlotte's Angel which has almost no THC and a very high concentration of CBD (averages 20%).

I grow it to make oil as buying off-the-shelf is insanely expensive.

Sorry, this is getting too long. YANBU, your doctor clearly hasn't yet taken a close look at CBD and I strongly recommend you try it

Lulualla · 22/09/2019 17:51

I think this is something to discuss with the practice manager.
You wanted to discuss CBD oil. Instead you got a lecture on smoking cannabis. The two are not the same, and instead of getting to discuss the oil (even if that discussion was 'don't take It') you got a lecture about drug use. The doctor wasted the appointment time, potentially recorded untrue statements in your notes and didn't actually give you any relevant information.

Lovemusic33 · 22/09/2019 17:52

I’m shocked how little people on here know about CBD. It is not an illegal drug, it is not the same as smoking a joint and it does help with anxiety (not for everyone).

My local chemist is now selling it. I give it to my 15 year old dd, she has severe anxiety and Aspergers, when taking it she’s a different child, more outgoing, less anxious and it also helps with pain she gets from HMS.

People are too quick to link CBD to weed, maybe go and do some research before judging 🤔

easyandy101 · 22/09/2019 17:52

Well, from my experience, doctors are never going to promote anything like this, just like if you told them how much you drank alcohol of a week and even if it's within the government guideline, would recommend that you cut down.

I sell various cbd products

Alot of my customers are there at their GPs suggestion

WombatChocolate · 22/09/2019 17:53

Did you say you’ve never taken and are not considering taking cannabis? If not, why not?

Considering your thread title led many of us to think you do smoke weed, perhaps your communication wasn’t that clear and that was why Dr was confused. Regardless, if you didn’t put Dr right, they still won’t know you don’t take it. Or perhaps they were just making a general point to say that IF you were considering weed, she wouldn’t recommend, rather than saying you are.

Regardless, get over it and move on. It’s a non-issue and allowing yourself to feel judged isn’t helpful for you. Perhaps it is part of your condition, but is so, recognise that and know you are prone to being hyper sensitive - that means these things are often your issue and not the other persons. Just realising this might help.

MonstranceClock · 22/09/2019 17:59

So you said you'd considered taking a cannabis then

Dying Grin

grumiosmum · 22/09/2019 18:02

I've just started taking CBD oil for mild anxiety & insomnia.

The advice on dosage has been hazy to say the least - and to start low & build up. I'm taking it sublingually. Could I ask others who are using it how much you are taking for similar reasons?

Valanice1989 · 22/09/2019 18:02

(I haven't read the full thread, so this may already have been answered.) Does CBD oil negatively affect mental health in the way that smoking cannabis does?

sisforscrabble · 22/09/2019 18:02

Considering your thread title led many of us to think you do smoke weed, perhaps your communication wasn’t that clear and that was why Dr was confused.

The conversation went like this

Dr - Have you considered any other form of treatments?
Me - I have considered trying CBD oil
*shocked look” from doctor
Dr - it’s not regulated in the UK and I won’t be providing a prescription for you.

She then went on to say studies show it doesn’t work and then went on about smoking cannabis.

Genuinely don’t know how anyone with a medical background would have got from my one comment that I’m going to smoke weed.
