AIBU Greta Thunberg?

onalongsabbatical · 22/09/2019 10:34

AIBU to ask everyone who can to get behind Greta Thunberg, even if only online, as she's now getting a lot a lot a lot of hate. She clearly threatens people - especially her polar opposites, men, rich old men, powerful men (did I mention men?). Let's all give her the lurve and support she needs.
So on FB I challenged one just now - Why are you attacking a young woman? - and he disappeared. Funny, that.

I think Matt Haig’s post about gaslighting is correct.

Tilltheendoftheline · 24/09/2019 18:13

There is no need to pounce on it and belittle her work.

Have people done that?

I didnt I mentioned it that some people would jump on it. Which is why she needs support. Some people will jump on her for anything.

I suggest you watch to documentary Jessie from little mix did and see the profundity impact fame and social media had on her.

Tilltheendoftheline · 24/09/2019 18:18

Always a worry that people would just ignore us and think us pissed as a fart!

My grandad and dds best friend have it. There are those of us that would be concerned.

@Chatt3rb0x why do you keep linking irrelevant posts from Instagram
Piers Morgan is a twat. We know this.

You last one was talking about denying people with mental health issues an opinion. Which we are not doing.

You clearly just dont want to accept that some people are genuinely concerned for her. And some of those people (me) have depression and experience with aspergers.

HeresMe · 24/09/2019 18:23

There is a lot of people who support her, which on a parenting forum is interesting I hope non of the posters who passionately care about the environment have more than 2 children, as one of the biggest impacts you can have to the environment is to have children.

Shenanagins · 24/09/2019 18:23

I do think that it’s great in terms of what she has achieved but I do worry about at what cost it will be to her personally.

At some point the media will move on, it always does and how will she cope with the fact that there is a new cause that isn’t hers.

Now I know that climate change isn’t going to go away but I’m also long enough in the tooth to have seen how this plays out in the media and it will move on as it did from the Syrian refugee crisis a few short years ago.

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 18:25

It must be off her own bat though. Even with a PR team or agency they’ll treat her as they do other talent, as they call it.

When people say exploited how does this work in action. Do you think she doesn’t have presence of mind to fully know what she wants to do?

Or she does but it’s the wrong decision for her health?

Trying to understand how it works - not in an abstract controlled by the media way but in a team at work

Chatt3rb0x · 24/09/2019 18:26

Because Till you are dying to paint a picture.

Apparently a picture of her happily eating her vegan lunch out of a pot of humus with a bread bag next to her indicates she isn’t being looked after. The gleeful proclamation that the fallout will be huge. SeriouslyHmm

Saying she’s straining, looking unwell, you have no basis for this. She made an impassioned speech. No she isn’t beaming from ear to ear a la Instagram covered in make up. We all differ.

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 18:29

She can clearly say no - to meeting Trump

And yes to other stuff

Or is it what will happen when she’s no longer in spotlight

She might be fine

Tilltheendoftheline · 24/09/2019 18:32

Apparently a picture of her happily eating her vegan lunch out of a pot of humus with a bread bag next to her indicates she isn’t being looked after. The gleeful proclamation that the fallout will be huge. Seriously

Its not gleeful. It's the exact opposite of gleeful. Her parents and PR team must know of the backlash over Harry and Megan's private jet. I dont wish a back lash on her.

Saying she’s straining, looking unwell, you have no basis for this. She made an impassioned speech. No she isn’t beaming from ear to ear a la Instagram covered in make up. We all differ.

In my opinion she does look like she is straining. All I have ever said is I am concerned that she is straining.

What are you talking about make up and instagram? I have a 17 year old dd, who doesnr have Instagram or beam in make up. Neither do I.

You dont seem to have a point. Making assumptions about my intention, adding bits into my posts and making assumptions about what I think a teen should be.

Its doesnt even make sense. It clearly suits your agenda, though.

Trewser · 24/09/2019 18:32

Oh fgs. GT has had mental health issues in the past. She looks desperately unhappy. I'm a mum and if GT was my dd I'd be desperately worried for her. Is Matt Haig suggesting thst is gaslighting to obscure the truth about climate change? I think his Twitter post is nasty, i imagine that there's a lot of mums out there pretty worried for her tbh.

Trewser · 24/09/2019 18:34

She made an impassioned speech she was crying. She looked desperately unhappy and uncomfortable. But thats fine, because, you know, climate change

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 18:38

It’s not unknown for people to cry delivering speeches. Wedding ones. Oscars

How she looks well she gets a bad time for that when not crying

Chatt3rb0x · 24/09/2019 18:39

Because a pot of hummus is the same as private jets.Hmm

Chatt3rb0x · 24/09/2019 18:40

She doesn’t look desperately unhappy. She looks like a quiet, shy and reserved teenager passionate about a cause.

Justaboy · 24/09/2019 18:40

Poor girl, does not look well If i were a parent and yes i know shes 17 i'd be diong my best now to get her home and get her well again shes made a start on this perhaps someone else can carry her torch now?..

Tilltheendoftheline · 24/09/2019 18:41

Because a pot of hummus is the same as private jets.

Yep there you go again. I didnt say she deserved a backlash because of a pot of hummus. Or that hummus is the same as a private jet.

I am talking about how horrible people cab be on social media. I donr agree with a backlash against it. But some people are twats that love to label people hypocrites.

For someone who spends so much time on social media, you dont really understand the negative side of it.

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 18:42

Gwynnie looks happy getting her Oscar

AIBU Greta Thunberg?
Tilltheendoftheline · 24/09/2019 18:42

She doesn’t look desperately unhappy. She looks like a quiet, shy and reserved teenager passionate about a cause.

In your opinion.

Other people have different opinions.

conderellainyellakissedafella · 24/09/2019 19:03

She looked like she forgot her speech and was uncomfortable. She has autism and mh issues and her parents still allow her to make a fool of herself in front of the world.

And now that papers are asking 'how will she get home' as the boat she travelled in has left the USA already.

I think people could turn on her quite easily as the media seems to be slowly turning away from her today....

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 19:04

It’s funny how people talk about turning on her then post that she made a fool of herself - adding to that already

Chatt3rb0x · 24/09/2019 19:04

How w did she make a fool of herself?Hmm

Trewser · 24/09/2019 19:04

Huh? I don't think GT was crying because she was happy.

conderellainyellakissedafella · 24/09/2019 19:04

Also she looks so young (maybe 10, certainly not 16) she looks pre pubescent.

FaerieKiss · 24/09/2019 19:05

chatt3 yes I would be concerned about any young person, athlete, musician or artist, whatever, who I could see was visibly distressed. However, I assumed this thread was about Greta? If you want me to incorporate my views on every young struggling, athlete or musician then well, we're gonna need a bigger thread.
