Argument in nail bar

Who is being unreasonable here?
Went to nail bar today looking forward to a pamper as I don't treat myself to such things very often. The guy that did my nails was really rough when filing one of my nails, and cut the side of my middle finger drawing blood. I let out a loud 'Ow!' cos it really hurt. Not being a baby, it really did hurt and is still throbbing now as I type this. The manager was just next to me doing someone else's nails and must have heard me but nothing was said. The guy who did my nails said sorry and carried on. My finger was really sore so I approached the manager and pointed out my finger had been cut. She was apologetic and asked me to wash my hands. Then I asked her if she would give me a discount. She gave me a look and said it was an accident and they don't do discounts. I said that's not v good customer service. She said it's only a small cut. She then very begrudgingly asked me how much discount I wanted. I said I thought 20% off was reasonable. She point-blank refused that, but ended up giving me 10% off which amounted to just £2.90 off the total. I left thinking there was very bad feeling all round and I didn't want to go back ever again. It's been preying on my mind all evening. I really don't think I was unreasonable.

Actually it’s the price here... op has paid what £30 for nails - That’s not a cheapy nail bar - that’s a beauty salon- so would expect a higher level of service. That said - I would ask for a discount - but would expect place Charing that amount to be using the cheap files etc

Pinkyyy · 22/09/2019 17:54

And to repeat myself to other posters, the charges are NOT cheap!

But £40 for a full set IS cheap.

Aridane · 22/09/2019 17:55

I hope the tools were sterile

Sterile really hmm
It’s a nail file not neurosurgery.

Of course they're supposed to be clean and sterilised after use.

What sort of places are you guys going to?

My local (Asian) nail salon sterilises stuff, thought it was standard, especially as they're cheap & cheerful and not particularly high end

Pinkyyy · 22/09/2019 17:55

That should say £30.

Aridane · 22/09/2019 17:56

In NSW nail salons are regulated with cleaning, disinfecting etc mandatory

ILikePaperHats · 22/09/2019 19:10

@Pinkyyy
It was £29 for infills. They charge about £40 for a full set.

I get my nails done regularly and it’s common to get injured

I'd suggest going somewhere else then because it IS NOT common to get injured!

mathanxiety · 23/09/2019 00:13

Nail salons (and spas, masage parlours, and hair salons/barber shops) are regulated where I am too, Ariadne (US).

All the technicians have to be state licensed and the licences displayed, and the municipal business licence has to be displayed too.

Then there are sanitary requirements:

I am gobsmacked that people on this thread wouldn't give the sterilisation of reusable instruments a second thought.

MorganKitten · 23/09/2019 01:14

YABU, accidents happen. They said sorry.

Pinkyyy · 23/09/2019 05:22

@ILikePaperHats that's still cheap. I wouldn't expect to pay less than £50 for a full set, done properly. And I like nowhere near London.

ILikePaperHats · 23/09/2019 08:20

@Pinkyyy
Yes but I suspect you live in the South of England? The price I paid was expensive for the North, certainly not cheap anyway.

OP posts:
Pinkyyy · 23/09/2019 08:32

I don't live in the south. Chinese nail shops charge £20-£40, that's low compared to a skilled salon.

MadameButterface · 23/09/2019 09:21

“I've always been dubious about how they treat their staff and now it seems they have little care for their customers either, I just went because it's local and convenient.”

Maybe you should start giving a shit about the ethical practices of what businesses you give your money to before you’re personally inconvenienced by them next time eh

gingersausage · 23/09/2019 14:55

@MadameButterface that’s what I can’t get over; the number of people who know these places are dodgy as fuck, but go anyway because having “nice” nails is more important.

@ariamontgomery, you said upthread I wouldn’t have asked for a discount or made a fuss personally. I probably wouldn’t even have said a loud ‘ow’ as I’d be reluctant to make the technician feel anxious in front of their manager for an accident. They probably don’t earn much anyway and asking for a discount won’t stop your finger hurting. I feel a bit sorry for the nail technician to be honest Can you honestly not see the irony in this statement? You feel sorry for the underpaid nail tech, but you go to them anyway 🤦‍♀️

MorganKitten · 24/09/2019 10:55

Chinese nail shops

Most are actually Vietnamese, actress Tippi Hedren had a lot to do with that.

EmeraldShamrock · 24/09/2019 11:07

The nail bars don't look very attractive, they are popping up everywhere alongside eyebrow threading, this week I saw some in superdrug I had to scrap DS special buggy past a therapist threading eyebrows at the end of the aisle.
Debenhams, even Penney's/primark has rows of desks filing nails.

I rarely get my nails shellac I mostly do them myself, if I do it is in a salon.
I like the experience not sitting in a retail store or a sweat shop.

colourlessgreenidea · 24/09/2019 11:09

Indeed. Vain, ignorant idiots. Hmm

wishiwasinthesun · 24/09/2019 11:29

Just don't go back!
