Argument in nail bar

ILikePaperHats · 20/09/2019 21:20

Who is being unreasonable here?
Went to nail bar today looking forward to a pamper as I don't treat myself to such things very often. The guy that did my nails was really rough when filing one of my nails, and cut the side of my middle finger drawing blood. I let out a loud 'Ow!' cos it really hurt. Not being a baby, it really did hurt and is still throbbing now as I type this. The manager was just next to me doing someone else's nails and must have heard me but nothing was said. The guy who did my nails said sorry and carried on. My finger was really sore so I approached the manager and pointed out my finger had been cut. She was apologetic and asked me to wash my hands. Then I asked her if she would give me a discount. She gave me a look and said it was an accident and they don't do discounts. I said that's not v good customer service. She said it's only a small cut. She then very begrudgingly asked me how much discount I wanted. I said I thought 20% off was reasonable. She point-blank refused that, but ended up giving me 10% off which amounted to just £2.90 off the total. I left thinking there was very bad feeling all round and I didn't want to go back ever again. It's been preying on my mind all evening. I really don't think I was unreasonable.

I hope the tools were sterile.

QualCheckBot · 20/09/2019 21:45

What is this big thing about asking for discounts? Was £2.90 really worth all that hassle? What about 5.80? At what stage does it become worth arguing for a discount? If you get the service entirely free because they don't want you to come back?

Invariably, the answer is going to be "no", so you're almost guaranteed to not get a decent discount and to piss people off.

Different if its really shoddy service you are paying a lot for, but this isn't in this genre.

Grandadwasthatyou · 20/09/2019 21:45

Nick... my first sentence reads that I stopped going to these nail bars!

Italiangreyhound · 20/09/2019 21:46

I would not go back. They should have given you a proper discount or not charged you, IMHO.

People don't go to have their finger cut. Of course it was an accident, if it had been on purpose you'd have been very angry! But just because it was an accident the should correct it.

Vote with your feet.

Italiangreyhound · 20/09/2019 21:46

YANBU.

Italiangreyhound · 20/09/2019 21:47

The salon offering a discount is to apologise for their mistake. It is a 'service' to the customer.

Nicknacky · 20/09/2019 21:50

grand But you clearly went more than once!

SparklyMagpie · 20/09/2019 21:51

Oh give over !
I've had this happen a couple of times and not once have I thought to ask for a discount especially as I know it's been an accident.
I'd feel abit of a knob kicking up a fuss over that

If it bothered me that much I'd go elsewhere next time

Wanting a 20% discount when it's probably cheaper than most salons? They'd probably be glad of you to go somewhere else

stucknoue · 20/09/2019 21:52

Accidents happen, I've seen how horrible people are to nail techs and are forever trying to get discounts, complain when they break a nail at home and expect it fixed for free, speak really condescendingly etc. I've had my skin caught, it really hurts but never dreamt of asking for a discount

Nicknacky · 20/09/2019 21:53

My nail girl didn’t give me a discount. I still go back to her as it was a mistake and getting £2 back wouldn’t have made it sting less and I wouldn’t ruin our long relationship for a small amount of money. She works hard, took very very little maternity leave so I wouldn’t financially punish her for a minor error.

I don’t get fined at work when I make a mistake.

SparklyMagpie · 20/09/2019 21:54

@Argeles come off it 😂😂😂 how long was you stopped in the car for to witness that happen? 😂

Firecarrier · 20/09/2019 21:54

Yanbu

London91 · 20/09/2019 21:54

It's happened to me before, the person apologised I don't think it's a big deal if they apologise straight away. Accidents happen.

Shoutymomma · 20/09/2019 21:59

“It’s only a small cut” made me giggle. You are a nail tech! 😆😆

SusanJohnson · 20/09/2019 22:00

If its causing psychological issues and you no longer feel you can go ato a nail bar ever again, and this in turn makes you a recluse due to your appearance not being good I think there could be a case for trying one of those no win no fee solicitors you see advertised

cunningartificer · 20/09/2019 22:00

I’m amazed people think it’s ok to get hurt or get ears cut with scissors—I’d really never go back. So no, you’re not unreasonable to ask for a discount, but I wouldn’t return if you felt it hurt and the apology wasn’t enough. Why would you pay for an injury?

SusanJohnson · 20/09/2019 22:00

recluse

MidniteScribbler · 20/09/2019 22:02

I've been getting my nails done (acrylics) for 30 years. I've been cut at times, it's not intentional, it's abrasive tools needing to be used. Accidents happen. Never asked for a discount for it.

DementedO1 · 20/09/2019 22:02

I'm with @makingawish here, these non standard salons are notorious for this. Also they don't tend to conform to standard hygiene practices so I'd make sure you disinfect the wound and keep a close eye on it. Speaking as a trained nail technician by the way. Of course accidents happen, of course good technicians make mistakes. Difference is they aren't done through rough handedness, they usually care, and they are insured so their tools are disinfected to confirm to regulations.

Eleanoryellow89 · 20/09/2019 22:04

I wouldn’t have asked for a discount- I think that was rude.
Having said that, I wouldn’t be going back simply because I’m a baby with these things

Italiangreyhound · 20/09/2019 22:05

If you as an employee make a mistake, you do not normally get fined. But if you as an employee make a mistake, your customer doesn't usually get expected to pay.

Like if they bring you the wrong meal in a restaurant they would replace it. And if that meant you were eating 30 minutes after the rest of your table then the restaurant may not charge you for your meal because they want to retain your future custom.

Italiangreyhound · 20/09/2019 22:06

And the salon were rude to argue down your suggested discount. They were not taking you seriously.

Interestedwoman · 20/09/2019 22:07

I wouldn't think it was ok to be injured, either! Yep, vote with your feet and go elsewhere next time. Sorry you had an unpleasant experience when you were hoping for a treat. xxx

TheRLodger · 20/09/2019 22:08

Yanbu cuts to the nail and finger really hurt. And as a professional I would hope that they wouldn’t cause an injury. It doesn’t matter if it’s in a accident. It could have happened 100 times or you were the first.

As for the manager witnessing the whole thing and not reacting is really bad

SusanJohnson · 20/09/2019 22:08

They by law have to be insured for accidents against their customers. If this now causes you to become a recluse and depressed and alters your life in a dramatic way you could claim against them as they will have to be insured
