Argument in nail bar

Who is being unreasonable here?
Went to nail bar today looking forward to a pamper as I don't treat myself to such things very often. The guy that did my nails was really rough when filing one of my nails, and cut the side of my middle finger drawing blood. I let out a loud 'Ow!' cos it really hurt. Not being a baby, it really did hurt and is still throbbing now as I type this. The manager was just next to me doing someone else's nails and must have heard me but nothing was said. The guy who did my nails said sorry and carried on. My finger was really sore so I approached the manager and pointed out my finger had been cut. She was apologetic and asked me to wash my hands. Then I asked her if she would give me a discount. She gave me a look and said it was an accident and they don't do discounts. I said that's not v good customer service. She said it's only a small cut. She then very begrudgingly asked me how much discount I wanted. I said I thought 20% off was reasonable. She point-blank refused that, but ended up giving me 10% off which amounted to just £2.90 off the total. I left thinking there was very bad feeling all round and I didn't want to go back ever again. It's been preying on my mind all evening. I really don't think I was unreasonable.

Totoroso what about the blood squirting out all the way home and damaging her clothes and also the embarresment of being covered in blood looking like shes dressed for Halloween

Do you always overreact this much? It's not that different to a paper cut, very little blood, and all over within a few seconds.

No wonder we are raising a generation of pampered little snowflakes that come crying to the yard duty teacher if they bump their finger and want a trip to first aid, ice pack, bandaid, and then if we don't immediately call mummy to advise of this horrendous injury, we are told we don't care about them.

chickenyhead · 21/09/2019 00:28

Was that not a joke?

That was a joke, wasn't it?

Frequency · 21/09/2019 00:38

I work in the beauty industry and while I've been fortunate enough to never have to claim on my insurance or have anyone attempt to sue me I have spoken to people who have.

Salon/Beauty insurers now have solicitors on staff and will defend any claim they think is exaggerated/malicious or spurious. The claim culture forced them to.

Of course, OP can try to sue but she should expect to have to explain her "mental anguish" and "loss of earnings" due to a nick on her pinky in front of a small claims court while an experienced solicitor rolls their eyes and tries not to piss themselves laughing questions her and asks for evidence of the mental anguish and loss of earnings.

PickAChew · 21/09/2019 00:39

YABU for paying silly money for keeping your nails yidym

PickAChew · 21/09/2019 00:39

Er, tidy

Argeles · 21/09/2019 01:04

@SparklyMagpie

I’ve explained what I saw twice, and you clearly chose not to believe me. These type of comments from posters are exactly the reason why I go through phases of not bothering to post on here for ages.

Argeles · 21/09/2019 01:10

@ILikePaperHats

You’re welcome. I hope your finger feels better soon.

It’s very true what you said about a lack of compassion on Mumsnet, general rudeness and tedious comments - I have no time for either. I go through long phases of not posting because of it, and have received 2 rude/tedious comments on this thread, so I may not contribute for some time again.

chickenyhead · 21/09/2019 01:15

Seems wise

ILearnedItFromABook · 21/09/2019 01:39

I think the problem is that he and the manager weren't apologetic enough (and that he was being too rough to begin with). When an apology seems sincere, it's easier to let these things go, but it sounds like the apology in this case wasn't especially convincing.

I wouldn't go back there, and I wouldn't hesitate to warn others, if you know anyone else who has their nails done in the area.

Putthekettleonplease · 21/09/2019 02:15

Yanbu.

I would want 50 per cent. They didn’t do their job. Plus you are open to infections now. I hope they clean their equipment before use ?

Plus. The attitude of them. If they were more caring you would be less annoyed. I would never go again and I’d be telling them that.

Nat6999 · 21/09/2019 02:52

Was it a salon in the S8 area? If it was the one I'm thinking of the guy cut me as well. Their nails are fantastic & long lasting but I hate the fact that they yank you about & sit jabbering away to each other in their own language, not giving a flying crap about their clients.

I hope the tools were sterile

THIS ^^

It is really, really worrying that the manager told you to wash your hands.

Contact your local business licensing authority wrt that instruction, and ask the nail bar itself to provide details of their sterilising, sanitising and disinfecting protocols.

If they use reusable tools they should have an autoclave.

The risks include:
Fungal infections
Staph infections
Serious blood borne illnesses like hepatitis.

meccacos2 · 21/09/2019 03:36

I get my nails done regularly and it’s common to get injured.

Which is why you need to be careful and go to a place with good hygiene and sterilisation practices.

I’ve never asked for a discount. No one does that.

I’ve had arguments though, when a place has done a shit job and I had walked in with better nails than when I left.

Don’t feel bad about the argument.

But don’t feel like you’re hard done by with the discount. Wanting 20% off the price is basically their entire profit margin.

Pinkyyy · 21/09/2019 05:14

So you went to an Asian nail bar where it's widely known that proper procedures are not followed, and now you're complaining? You've said yourself they rush to do as many people as they can, why would you expect that to be in anyway pampering?

If you wanted a treat them you should have gone to a place where they don't use electric files and churn people out as fast as is humanly possible. YABU to have expected any different.

Even with all that said, cuts happen. Albeit much less often when care and time is taken, but they happen. I wouldn't expect to be compensated for that.

Pinkyyy · 21/09/2019 05:16

It's quite obvious that their equipment is not sterile, you can see that before you sit down. The OP chose to put costs above hygiene and sadly that was the wrong decision. 50% off is madness.

onioncrumble · 21/09/2019 06:18

Yes get a discount. So the guy who is ilegaly imported from Vietnam on a pound a day can have it deducted from his salary. Nail bars are best avoided, they are cheap for a reason, because they are morally indefensible.

spanglydangly · 21/09/2019 06:36

Well stop going there then! Jabbering in their own language, you sound bloody awful, but hey you've got nice cheap nails!

Maneandfeathers · 21/09/2019 06:41

Sterile really Hmm
It’s a nail file not neurosurgery.

squeakybike · 21/09/2019 06:43

You should contact www.injurylawyers4u.co.uk

Also, is your name Sharon by any chance? 😂

MaybeitsMaybelline · 21/09/2019 07:24

I don’t know how so many of you can knowingly go to one of “those nail bars” OP. Seriously those young men and women look utterly miserable. Every time I see one I hope they get closed down.

Imagine working 12 hours a day in a foreign country, having to do dozens and dozens of sets of nails illegally with no idea when you will see your family again.

You are contributing to modern slavery. These people are trafficked.

AutumnFabreeze · 21/09/2019 07:51

I used to go to nail bars until I started walking in and a man stepped forward to do it. Every time this happened I ended up having a really stressful experience. They are rough. Every time I felt like someone had gone at my cuticles with a cheese grater. A nail appointment is not only about coloured nails. It is a treat to destress and have self care. If you don't get that, change places.

Now I do my own and do a better job of it.

sweepysue · 21/09/2019 08:07

I can't believe people go to these disgusting places. I mean how many people get 'cut' per day? I'm placing bets they don't have time nor bother to sterilise their equipment.
I had mine done twice at a high street salon, a long time ago before these cheap Chinese salon places opened, and twice I remember being in some amount of discomfort during the procedure.

I bought the gelish lamp, I buy all my own gelish polishes & I now do my own gel nails (along with all the nail prep ) at home myself.

Ugh ..... sounds like a few of you are getting cut in these places & you still keep going back .... grim Sad

ShirleyPhallus · 21/09/2019 08:21

Do try that in one of these places and let us know how it goes Hmm

MadMadsMum · 21/09/2019 08:36

While I totally get that accidents happen, I don’t think you are being unreasonable to think this could have been handled better. I don’t think you’re making a big deal out of it or are trying to sue anyone for negligence - I just think you are a bit put out that is wasn’t handled better.

Longlongsummer · 21/09/2019 11:57

It all sounds really rubbish reading the posts.

Poorly paid staff working long hours. Dubious health and safety. Not sterile. And it’s common to get cut and draw blood?

This whole getting your nails done business seems more trouble that it is worth! I have natural nails for the most part or paint them myself. They are in great condition and quite long. Who needs all of this?
