Stacey Dooley

I am a bit of a fan girl of Stacey Dooley. Love her documentaries and now her sleeping over series.
So I feel a bit off asking what people think of her dress sense. I don't understand it, huge baggy tracksuits and those awful earrings.
I may be missing something, is it a fashion thing?, but I have kids her age, and none of their group etc.... dress like that.
Please enlighten this old bag!

I like her very much too, can't say I've noticed what she wears. I presume she wears what is comfortable and practical for her work.

1forAll74 · 20/09/2019 01:39

I like Stacey, and all her documentaries, I assume she wears her casual style clothes,as she is always travelling somewhere, and getting in planes, jeep type cars, police cars and vans, and going to some quite rough places at times., I like her natural looks, after seeing so many plasticky women on tv..

And now her brilliant dancing to top it all off.

kumbyah · 20/09/2019 06:47

In my opinion, she’s brave because she puts herself at risk, with the content of some of her older documentaries. She’s been into male prisons (Honduras) to interview men about crimes against women, she spoken to prolific violent gang members, she goes with police crews to arrest child sex traffickers and questions abusers (the Philippines)...

So does Trevor McDonald but no one calls him "brave".

kumbyah · 20/09/2019 06:49

So we can't mention her clothes because she's a female.

But because she's female we label her "brave".

Double standards or what.

summersherewishiwasnt · 20/09/2019 06:49

She dresses like that because she has the confidence and attitude to please herself, she dress for Stacey Dooley. Good for her. The world is full of lambs and followers.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 20/09/2019 06:51

I want to like her but I can’t get passed her extremely irritating accent.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/09/2019 06:56

I don't like her. I agree with David Lammy when he said about her being a "white saviour" to be honest. Posting instagram photos with children from developing countries and writing "OBSSESED." It just seems exploitative to me.

CSIblonde · 20/09/2019 07:08

I'm sure she's a lovely person but I can't understand why people think she's so amazing. She's a bog standard 'yoof appeal' TV presenter. There's no real analytical investigative journalism, she just picks very current issues & breathlessly describes them in quite a simplistic way .

Because we’re talking about Stacey Dooley on this thread, not Trevor or Louis, but whose documentaries I also watch. But if we’re going to go down that route, I’ll change my wording;-

In my opinion, any journalist who goes to a war zone to interview people and expose the reality of what is really happening, putting themselves in danger, is courageous.

Sorted 😉

ariamontgomery · 20/09/2019 08:10

Everything about this girl annoys me - I find her shallow and uninteresting. I feel like there’s no depth to her at all.

nonmerci · 20/09/2019 08:15

Funny how nobody gives a shit what Louis Theroux wears

This.

LolaSmiles · 20/09/2019 08:19

wax
If I remember correctly that was Lammy on about comic relief things. Wasn't he fairly selective in who he chose to bitch about in that way?
He has years and years to make some valid criticisms of some elements of Comic Relief and yet he didn't. Instead he saved them to have a go at a young, attractive female journalist.

GreatBigNoise · 20/09/2019 08:22

I agree. I love documentaries but I find hers are superficial and give little insight into the subject matter. I also find the way she talks to people irritating and patronizing. Can't say I've noticed what she is wearing though.
Louis Theroux is also a bit irritating but seems to get more out of the people he is interviewing.

TheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 20/09/2019 08:23

I find it funny how quickly people say "don't be mean, stop judging, you're not a nice person" etc. Particularly as you're not even being mean, in my opinion. What you're doing is a variation of what most women do on a regular basis. How virtuous they all are. I find it really bizarre, mumsnet does not reflect the real world. Is it just a skewed angelic population on here, or are they all kidding themselves that they're the purest, least judgemental people ever?!

EmeraldShamrock · 20/09/2019 08:30

I absolutely love Stacey Dooley. Her investigations are hard hitting particularly the one in Luton and child abuse in the Philippines. Sad
On her style I like it, I think as she is slim she can wear baggy clothing as she is not hiding anything like a MC person in mismatched clothing or with an old school bag it doesn't matter as they know they can buy better, she knows she's wearing them because she can. Smile

hollieberrie · 20/09/2019 08:36

I love her fashion. It's a fairly popular east London hipster type look though? Nothing unusual about it to me. It works extra well on her as she is so petite.

Ponoka7 · 20/09/2019 08:36

@user764329056
"Don’t like her as a presenter, nor Theroux, there are far better than both of them"

Can you suggest alternatives? Particularly the sexual exploitation of schoolgirls in Japen, as part of everyday culture, by 'respectable' men.
Or the coverage of life in Lagos.

How relevant to anything is some types of journalism? Others may ask as probing questions, in a different style, but a lot of the Country won't bother watching because what is the point?

We know BJ is a liar and a dangerous man, but he's head if our Country. We knew Saville was a sex offender, but he eas allowed to continue. We knew Prince Andrew was entertaining child sex offenders, but we ignored it until it wouldn't go away. The higher end journalists certainly let us down on Hillsborough.

Both journalists might be too 'for the masses' for some people's taste. But we need to reach 'the masses' on these issues, that they can change or be aware of. When it comes to the money men, China and Japan are held up as ideals.

But while we are on the subject, I often thought that Trevor Mcdonald must have put on weight since he got his suit fitted, they sometimes look tight.

Marzipane · 20/09/2019 08:41

OP could have started a thread in Style & Beauty asking about the combo of 'awful' earrings and baggy clothes, but instead she chose AIBU to judge a specifically named celeb. Totally unnecessary to make it personal.

YABU to start a thread about a named celeb to discuss their clothing choices.

jesusandjollof · 20/09/2019 08:41

I agree @Waxonwaxoff0. That incident put me off her greatly. Especially as it later transpired that she'd lied about the child's family being happy about her taking the photo.

Ginmel · 20/09/2019 08:42

I only watched a couple of her earlier documentaries and thought she came across very naive. Couldn't help but feel someone else had done all the discovery and written the questions and she just the presenter. No credibility.

GrapefruitGin · 20/09/2019 09:04

No I don’t think it’s ‘fashion’. Trends come and go very quickly these days but I do think she knows her style and wears it well. She has amazing hair and skin!

Rubyupbeat · 20/09/2019 11:21

@:39beingchampion

I just can't listen to or watch her. I know he's already been mentioned, but I see her as a Louis Theroux for stupid people.

What a snob.
So what does that actually make Louis then? He's said many a time he admires her guts and her skills.
I love Louis, never missed a show, so am I half stupid and half intelligent?

OP posts:
NigesFakeWalkingStick · 20/09/2019 11:25

I couldn't give a shiny shit what she wears. I don't see threads critiquing Louis Theroux or other male journalists so begs the question why are we doing so for female journalists?

kumbyah · 20/09/2019 13:07

Women have been judged for what they wear since the beginning of time why is this suddenly something we can't many comment on ffs.

You can come on Mumsnet and slag off boris Johnson, Jamie Oliver, Rees mogg but don't dare criticise or pass comment on a woman. Ffs...

kumbyah · 20/09/2019 13:09

Re her dress sense it's just like other young people these days - see Brooklyn beckham, rocco ritchie, Anais Gallagher..they all look similar. It's that purposefully baggy scruffy look. But because we are older we don't get it.
