To pump on the train?

jamtomorrow1 · 18/09/2019 08:51

My train journey is an hour each way. There are plug sockets. I feel that this is wasted expressing time and also my boobs hurt. Part of me fears getting the buzzing Tommee Tippee pump out but part of me really wants to see the facial expressions of the elderly male commuters around me. Thoughts?

I would have rested on a train but no way would I have expressed. I always expressed in private despite being happy to breastfeed in public.

I'm not entirely sure what the difference is though.

percheron67 · 18/09/2019 09:28

Silly me! Saw the post and immediately thought of bicycle tyres?!

Lockheart · 18/09/2019 09:28

As long as it's a) quiet, b) not messy and c) not taking up the seat next to you I don't really care what anyone else does on the train.

Only thing I'd say is that trains can be bumpy and not the cleanest. If you think it's practical though then go for it.

Pamplemousecat · 18/09/2019 09:29

I agree there’s a bit of an attention seeking element to this. Do it if you want but no need to take such pleasure in it. I understand if you genuinely think it’s a good idea but don’t do it to piss people off.

riddles26 · 18/09/2019 09:37

Like a pp, I have happily breastfed anywhere in public but wouldn't be comfortable pumping but that's me personally. Certainly doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it.

I have tried Elvie, it is a dream for discreet pumping - you feel like its huge in your bra but the person opposite can't tell it is on. Prior to Elvie, I've used Medella Swing and Elvie is not as gentle and bordered on uncomfortable after a bit for me but for discreet pumping, it is a brilliant invention

Damntheman · 18/09/2019 09:37

Is it really attention seeking to pump if your breasts feel like they're about to explode? Not really. You don't see anything that dramatic with a pump. It's just necessary sometimes.

Go for it OP, it's no different to feeding a baby really. If men can have their tits out in the summer with nobody blinking then it's past time women can do it to pump excess milk. People need to get over themselves and just not look if they don't want to see it. It's not that hard.

toomuchtooold · 18/09/2019 09:37

Christ the lassie already apologised about the old blokes comment and anyway she's just nerving herself up to do something a bit embarassing by giving a hypothetical finger to any potential tutters, has nobody else ever done that? Try and style it out?

Kokeshi123 · 18/09/2019 09:38

I think it should be okay, but be careful about hygiene.Trains are not the cleanest places. You should wash and sanitize your hands, and store your milk in a chill bag with an ice pack.

hubbletelescope · 18/09/2019 09:39

Trains are very dirty so I wouldn't but you do what you like.

meetthewildes · 18/09/2019 09:39

I do, every day, and have for the past ten months. It's fine. I do it under a big t-shirt (summer) and a jacket (winter) and I'm sure people wonder what the vibrating noise is but frankly, I have a baby to feed and do not care. I'm not flashing my boobs at anyone, I'm not looking for attention. I'm doing what I need to do in order to pay my mortgage and keep my little one fed.

If you're commuting in from the South East coast, or you take the Victoria Line, feel free to message me if you want somebody to sit with on the train whilst you figure it out.

DarlingNikita · 18/09/2019 09:40

I really thought this was going to be about farting on the train

Me too!

ElizaPancakes · 18/09/2019 09:40

I wouldn’t have done, and would have been in awe at the balls of you to do it if I’m honest!

I did pump but found it really difficult to do discreetly.

Schuyler · 18/09/2019 09:40

Is it pump and dump or would you store to feed? Trains are just so unhygienic so it’d worry me. The actual act of pumping wouldn’t bother me if I was commuting with you, as long as you don’t eat smelly food at the same time. Wink

FindusCrispyPancakes · 18/09/2019 09:40

I’ve done it on trains, at concerts, in bars, everywhere and anywhere really (if I didn’t have the baby on me!). I’ve even used a breast pump on centre court at Wimbledon during the final, I give no shits where I do it! I was wearing a dress too (I did put my cardigan on backwards, I’m not one of them “look at meeeeee” people).

I don’t see an issue, as long as you don’t flop your tit out onto the table and can manage to attach it under your top. The noise mine makes does sound like a mooing cow though so I guess that could be annoying. I’ve sat on the table seat on virgin trains and just casually got mine out sat opposite a bloke, I don’t think he realised what I was doing to be honest.

I’d definitely do it, that’s excellent pumping time when you can’t really do much else.

Onescaredmuma · 18/09/2019 09:42

I thought it was about farting too. SBD the way forward on a train, they all smell it but was it you... they'll never know Grin

Kaddm · 18/09/2019 09:42

Trains are filthy

Anyway I think in public, pumping is different to feeding a baby and that it isn’t acceptable. You should probably do it before the train ride.

FindusCrispyPancakes · 18/09/2019 09:42

Trains are just so unhygienic so it’d worry me unless you rub your nipples on the floor before pumping I highly doubt it’s any less hygienic that pumping anywhere else.

octoberismytime · 18/09/2019 09:43

Your attitude is what pisses people off, look at me I’m so special & different because I gave birth 🙄 Billions of us have and have no need to shock people, grow up
Agreed

neverendingflorist · 18/09/2019 09:44

YABU just because the plugs on trains clearly state they are just to be used for charging devices and not to power electric equipment, so the conductor/other passengers would be able to ask you to stop and it would have nothing to do with preventing you breast feeding. Just use a manual pump.

InDubiousBattle · 18/09/2019 09:45

I wouldn't have pumped on a train, my pump made an whirring noise which would have been just annoying for other people. If you have a silent one then people won't give a shit.

ThePolishWombat · 18/09/2019 09:46

I’d crack on personally.
Yes the noise of most pumps is a bit annoying....but so is the sound of the person munching their way through the loudest packet of crisps in the world, or having a phone conversation loud enough for the whole carriage to hear!
I’ve never used a cover to breastfeed in public, but I probably would use one if I was pumping - but again, entirely your choice whether you do or not!! I personally wouldn’t give a hoot if I saw you pumping on a train

modgepodge · 18/09/2019 09:47

I did it (under a cover) after going to a concert and being away from my baby for 10 hours. Boobs were agony!!!! I’d already used the pump at the concert and not been able to sterilise (obvs) so just dumped what I’d pumped. I don’t think the train being dirty necessarily makes it unhygienic as long as pump is sterilised. I’d be more concerned about how to keep the milk cool afterwards?

FindusCrispyPancakes · 18/09/2019 09:53

I agree there’s a bit of an attention seeking element to this.

How does that work exactly? If for example you are out on a night out and usually feed every 2-3 hours it’s impossible if you go out for a meal and then drinks to not need to pump in that time. I needed to pump twice on my first night out without our daughter, the first time I went and sat in a gross toilet for 40 min (I have a single pump), I was out with a large group of friends all couples with children. When I came back after 40min they asked where I’d been and I said pumping, they said why not just do it here? That was the first and last time I sat in a toilet with a breast pump.

JudgeRindersMinder · 18/09/2019 09:55

*I would have rested on a train but no way would I have expressed. I always expressed in private despite being happy to breastfeed in public.

My thoughts too, but I can’t work out the difference either. I exclusively pumped for a year and managed to not do it in public
