The 'ticket' is announced at each party's respective national convention, cozie. In 2020 the Dem is in July, the GOP is in August. But the primary elections start in February and run through June with dates varying from state to state . The primary is when each state's voters go to their respective polls to choose the candidate their convention delegates are to vote for at the convention. So the POTUS nominee is pretty well known by the time the convention comes since the primary results are already known. The presidential primary ballot chooses POTUS nominee only, not VP. The VP is chosen by the National Cmte with the advice of the POTUS nominee during the convention.

Roussette, it's more confusing to me than a Scrotus speech. lol. So it was a vote to ask the EU officials for an extension to take a vote on approving a Brexit deal. And Parliament voted YES to force BoJo to ask for more time. And he doesn't want more time. Because he likes the deal he's put together?

What's the point in delaying? Trying to equate it to US politics...is it because certain MPs feel that delaying the vote may mean that it comes to a vote when the majority has changed?

cozietoesie · 19/10/2019 22:32

I may change my timing ........guess, then.Grin

Just got a newsflash from CNN on my MacBook: Trump announces G7 will NOT be held at the Doral. No explanation & by tweet of course.

Developing story

Roussette · 20/10/2019 07:51

Across Yes, BoJo is being forced into this extension but as far as Remainers like me, it is a good good thing. It's a hard deal which will affect us for generations and should not be rammed through and is a precursor for 'no deal' at the end of the transition period Dec. 2020 when no trade agreement has been agreed. It needs the economic inspections other deals have had.

Just heard Doral's out...
The President called the rising criticism his administration was facing "Irrational Hostility," and wrote, "I thought I was doing something very good for our Country by using Trump National Doral, in Miami, for hosting the G-7 Leaders."

How in god's name could him using Doral be 'good for the country'.?

I read somewhere that Doral is in desperate need of a refurb and that would've been done before the G7 paid for by the taxpayer of course.
Shock

The Dems had asked to see the whole process of how Doral had been chosen... comparisons with other venues, costings etc. I doubt there were other venues considered.

They were explaining on the radio yesterday about the Brexit deal, let's see if I got this right or it makes any sense at all: Boris doesn't want to ask for an extension. He has to ask for one if a deal has not been approved by 31st October. The deal has yet to be approved by Parliament, and indeed may not be. So if Parliament is still wrangling about it come the end of October, wham - we're out, without a deal in place. The vote was to ensure the deal had been properly debated and voted on before the deadline. Boris is now saying well, it still might be agreed in time, so is still refusing to extend. Or possibly not. You can't always tell with Boris.

Given that it's the 20th already, though, they better bloody get a wiggle on.

Anniegetyourgun · 20/10/2019 10:36

While I'm here, just feel motivated to say it occurred to me recently that the fallout of Trump pulling out, breaking agreements and shutting his eyes to various atrocities is proving just exactly how influential the US has been in foreign policy. Not always for the best, but in general it has been a tremendous force keeping certain things from flying apart, just by being there sometimes; just through a carefully worded diplomatic statement. In fact that's usually better than actually going in with heavy guns, something the US doesn't always make a great success of. Just knowing they're there, watching, with a red button they will probably never use, and a lot of dollars to splash in strategic ways, has kept a lot of unpleasantness damped down. The majority of, dare I say, civilized countries back their system up because it is seen as in everyone's interests, even those places that resent it because they'd much rather be lootin' and pillagin' next door but don't quite dare. Now they can dare.

Since the US has officially stopped caring what goes on beyond its borders there is likely to be tremendous upheaval until the next Great Power takes its place. Make America what again? It was great. Look at the size of the vacuum it's leaving.

On a much less apocalyptic note, how amusing that the Trump supporters expected a free ride. Thought that was against everything America stands for? Socialist stuff, right? I'm fairly sure the First Amendment never said someone else had to pay for it.

Lweji · 20/10/2019 10:46

Yes, Trump's presidency will make Obama's more discrete style of world influencing look a lot better.

Thanks Roussette & Annie. I think I've got a handle on the Brexit vote/extension thing. It really must be like living on tenterhooks to be living in the UK and not really knowing how this is going to play out.

Seems to me like a 'no deal Brexit' would be like burning down the house to get rid of a spider. You'd think BoJo would do anything to avoid it.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/10/2019 17:28

Especially given that his name is Boris!

Exactly!

This is a couple of days old but don't think it's been linked...

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/10/2019 20:04

The interesting thing is that it seems there are fewer actual GOP-registered voters now than there were in 2016. If Trump can rely on support from all but six per cent of the GOP base, that's one thing; but if that is 94% of 37% of the voters not of 42% of the voters, he has lost a fair bit of support in fact.
