By anyone. I can't decide if it bothers me more coming from men or women.

I really hate it.

Nae bother, pal.

NearlyGranny · 14/09/2019 20:08

I was a bit shocked at first to be called 'mate' when I moved to current home. Took me a while to realise they were actually saying 'maid'!

GingerbreadTeen · 14/09/2019 20:09

I don't hear 'mate' all that often tbh but do dislike the greeting 'hi guys' when I'm in a group of females.

OooErMissus · 14/09/2019 20:13

I don't like 'mate' at all either. I remember hearing a guy call his girlfriend 'mate' and was Shock

That would've been actual deal-breaker territory for me - we wouldn't have got past a first date.

Fleetheart · 14/09/2019 20:13

I particularly don’t like it when my DS calls me “mate”. Sends me ballistic

NameChangedForTheDay · 14/09/2019 23:40

I can handle 'mate', but have to cringe a bit when some of my friends call me "dude". I'm hearing more people (men) using this term for women lately too.

Goes off to check chin for whiskers

Sparklesocks · 14/09/2019 23:41

I understand, I don’t think people mean it disrespectfully though.

Crushedvelvetcouch · 14/09/2019 23:45

I'm scouse; to my ears its infintely preferable to cock/cocker/duck or indeed hun Grin

1066vegan · 14/09/2019 23:48

I don't mind mate, duck or pet but hate hun.

joblotbubble · 14/09/2019 23:56

Mate seems to be 'in' against with the teens. Not 'alright mate' more 'maaaate, look at her shoes'

KellyHall · 15/09/2019 00:02

Really??

There are far, far worse things to be called!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/09/2019 00:03

I don’t like it either. I also can’t stand love or girl.

SD1978 · 15/09/2019 00:04

My pet hate is folks especially when it's spelt folx. And yeah, also guys for a group of women.

redcarbluecar · 15/09/2019 05:54

I don’t like it much, although have used it myself, and cringe inwardly when it slips out. I don’t much like ‘love’ either, particularly from a stranger.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 15/09/2019 06:03

I hate 'Guys' and have been known to stand to my full 5'6 and with a withering look say 'Do I look like a guy?' Grin
The local greeting here used to be 'Me duck' and I am quite sad it is dying out.

CherryPavlova · 15/09/2019 06:07

I’ve never been called ‘mate’ in my life. I thought it was what football fans called each other, after a few pints before a match. Plumbers and carpenters have mates, don’t they?

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 15/09/2019 06:10

I would argue that "guy" singular means a man. Whereas semantically "guys" plural means a group of people, not just men. So no problem.

chatwoo · 15/09/2019 06:18

What @SD1978 said Grin

DontForgetToDeadhead · 15/09/2019 06:19

My boss calls me "mate". Tbh it is one off the less annoying things that he does - he also calls me "miss" sometimes Hmm

LazyFace · 15/09/2019 07:07

I agree, I hate it. My son's rugby coach calls everyone 'mate'. I barely ever go there. I also hate 'love'... I feel like saying something about their unwanted affection.
But I'm a foreigner and someone would probably try and educate me on how it's just the English way or something so I keep quiet and seethe inside.

Purplerunner · 15/09/2019 07:18

Yes to "dude" I got called this for the first time yesterday, was slightly confused to be honest.

Also dislike "guys" particularly to an all female group.

northernknickers · 15/09/2019 10:13

There's context to add to all these things that can make them more or less bearable...hun is never ok, in any context for me! Mate is only just about bearable if it's in a big group, and people are initially/generally greeting each other...eg...oh mate, it's been so long! Good to see you! However, a few years ago I started dating an ex navy guy, who called me 'mate' ALL THE FUCKING TIME!!! It was unbearable...I hated it! In every sentence! He said he couldn't help it, it was how 'every matelot' spoke to each other...which made me feel SO special! We had to part ways 🤯

Ohflippineck · 15/09/2019 10:15

No people been with mate.
Hate “guys”, “you guys” etc. Cringey.
