I really don't like being called "mate".

By anyone. I can't decide if it bothers me more coming from men or women.

I really hate it.

Hate being called mate especially by men.
Also hate 'Beaut.'

pistolknight · 15/09/2019 16:46

@Greytexpectations it’s an actual job title as in first mate on a ship or plumber’s or carpenter’s mate Confused so yes it is all to do with your occupation Wink it’s normally the term for an assistant

To answer the op, yup it’s annoying - also any other term like love, pet, gal, girl, duck, miss etc.

LuckyLou7 · 15/09/2019 16:47

It's a term of endearment. I have no problem with being called mate, me duck, sweetheart, love, even hun isn't that dreadful.

cacklingmags · 15/09/2019 16:49

I think Mate, Guys, and Dude are really nice gender neutral greetings.
I hate Ladies, Pet, Babe, Hun and numerous other names that sound like some small and insignificant creature.

bluegirlgreen · 15/09/2019 16:55

@NoDontLookAtMeImShy

YANBU I hate it too, but moreso from men.

IME, a man calls a woman 'mate' to give her the message that he is not attracted to her, or interested in her romantically.

It pisses me off because I think 'I don't NEED you calling me mate or dude to show you don't fancy me. I am 100% NOT interested in you anyway. I am happily married, and have not a jot of interest in you anyway!' Hmm

Fraggling · 15/09/2019 17:04

Guys and dude aren't gender neutral :/

I would say mate is.

WanderingMind · 15/09/2019 17:11

Me ducks around here, too.

I have randomly started calling DH mate though, and I have no idea why, it just pops out! Confused

PinkBuffalo · 15/09/2019 17:12

I am so guilty of this! I I never knew people didn't like it! I call people mate all the time! Also use guys as in like "hi guys" when I arrive somewhere and there's a group of my friends! Use these for both male and female! Genuinely didn't know it was an issue as I thought I was being friendly! It's automatic for me, so not even sure if I can stop doing it!

Teacakeandalatte · 15/09/2019 17:19

I don't mind people calling me mate in a friendly way. Why does everyone hate it so much?

ALongHardWinter · 15/09/2019 17:20

I hate it too, it sits alongside 'dear' and 'madam' in my 'hate list'. I don't mind being addressed as 'guys' when I'm in a group though.

Inebriati · 15/09/2019 17:27

The only times anyone has called me mate they've tried to start a fight.

Fair enough, never heard that before. The way Cherry put it initially it came across with an air of.... Snobbery for use of a better word 😂

GreytExpectations · 15/09/2019 17:40

Why does everyone hate it so much?

I personally don't hate it at all but suspect the dislike for it (especially on Mumsnet) is a class thing....

Butchyrestingface · 15/09/2019 17:42

It depends. If a potential paramour is calling me “mate”, I would consider this a sign of being friendzoned, hence 😭😭😭

In that case, YADNBU.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 15/09/2019 17:52

I don't mind per se but ..... it's more often than not a sign that someone has mistaken me for a man Shock

PMSL there's always one! 😂 'it's a CLASS thing!' ... What a load of shit.

Exactly what I said/think... When a man calls a woman 'mate' he is letting her know he is not romantically interested in her. And as I said, it pisses me off because I think 'don't flatter yourself, I am not interested in you anyway!' Hmm

tierraJ · 15/09/2019 18:28

Round here there are a lot of Romany families so you might get called 'mush' as in awright mush..

I don't mind being called 'mate' or anything else if its meant in a friendly way not a patronising way.

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 15/09/2019 18:38

@FaFoutis
"Maid" is Cornish as you like.

DH once accidentally called me ‘mate’ and since then it’s become a bit of an in-joke between us, so it’s not always weird! That said in general I would find it a bit jarring...

Dollywilde · 15/09/2019 19:15

I’d rather mate to love anywY

NotSorry · 15/09/2019 19:18

I had an appointment with someone once who kept calling me “man”. I think it was from the northeast, so it’s possibly colloquial. Every time he said it I looked at him quizzically.

NotSorry · 15/09/2019 19:19

“It” should have been “he”

justbefuddleme · 15/09/2019 19:19

Ex DP would call everyone pal..it made me want to rip his throat out Angry

MaudebeGonne · 15/09/2019 19:22

I use it a fair amount and I have no objection to being called it. It is short and snappy and not overly familiar (like babe, hon, love, lovey or lovely). It is friendly and not sexual. I don't see a problem with it at all.
