Stop all this highly irritating coyness.

OP posts:

On this thread it's hard to see the funny posts Vs the usual MN anti hobby bitching on some posts.

It's something on MN I find odd that I don't see offline. Offline loads of people I know have lots of hobbies and many aren't my cup of tea but I'd never hate on then like I see on here. On MN there does seem to be a weird thing where watching TV for hours or box sets is acceptable but then other hobbies are really looked down on

All of which is still somehow more nerdy than memorising tables of data and statistics about how well someone kicks a ball under different circumstance
Haha!! So true. Grin

Film trivia also seems to be an acceptable man hobby. But computer coding is nerdy and a sign he's clearly got a porn addiction.

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 13/09/2019 08:12

@IdiotInDisguise fair enough because the people I know who do it or follow a hunt, I see in circles where they feel safe enough to discuss it, although I have noted that even if hunts are named they're careful. They do put photos on social media though.

GothMummy · 13/09/2019 08:13

Has MN forgotten that hunting anything with hounds/dogs is actually illegal and has been for over 20 years? The hunts round here are all drag hunts where you follow a prelaid scent. Everyone I know would be massively pissed off if people tried to claim they were hunting foxes!

On the DH's hobby thing though - how about historical reenactment (sigh).

JellyfishAndShells · 13/09/2019 08:13

When I met my DH, he had recently given up rowing - at least at competitive level, still did some practice and coaching. He admitted that his commitment to the sport had hugely contributed to the breakdown of his previous relationship as he was always training, travelling to competitions, competing or crashed out tired because of the training.

So we met - and he took up cycling

Twinkles72 · 13/09/2019 08:13

Golf, hockey, drinking beer 🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫 lol

1FineDane · 13/09/2019 08:13

Men I've dated have had hobbies such as collecting little dinky car models, rock climbing (that one bores me to tears - I've even had to look at pictures! of cams he bought), motorcycling, cycling, golf and flying drones.

stucknoue · 13/09/2019 08:13

But try cricket, golf, 5 aside football ... one of many reasons he's stbexh

MsMustDoBetter · 13/09/2019 08:16

Women who are married to cyclists should buy a bike and put it in the boot of their car and then go out for hours and hours at a time. They don't have to actually cycle, but men only approve of family avoidance strategies that they themselves partake.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/09/2019 08:16

I couldn't possibly tell you my DH is out running because that would totally out me.

LynetteScavo Shock! I wasn't expecting to find out from MN that I'm bigamously married.

Allington

DP has got a new job, which involves a lot of travel and long hours. When he does get home, all he does is pursue his hobby, which is painting cardboard boxes to look like London buses, and therefore is not at all outing.

He has also just got a new dog, and although I don't mind walking it for him, AIBU to expect him to pick up the dog sh*t in the garden BEFORE pursuing his hobby when he is at home?

Grin Grin Grin The buses are the least of your problems, frankly. I mean this kindly - don't bank on a long marriage.

TomPinch · 13/09/2019 08:17

A lot of you sound no better than a bunch of snarky teenagers wincing about their parents' embarrassing habits.

Or some very dull work colleagues of mine who would talk the same way, and spent every weekend sleeping or getting smashed. "Yeah.. great weekend, we got sooooo wrecked... can't remember a thing".

Yeah. How very cool. Give me the interesting people with slightly absurd hobbies anytime.

1FineDane · 13/09/2019 08:20

Oh going to quizzes was another one!
Canoeing.

cranstonmanor · 13/09/2019 08:20

*My friend posted pictures on fb of him blacksmithing something and my first instinct was “Wow, that’s amazing, I wish I could have a ho at that!”

@Dyrne*

You can! There are blacksmithing workshops where you can make a knife or a garden ornament in a day or maybe two. Just google it, it's fun to try out new things once in a while.

cranstonmanor · 13/09/2019 08:21

I wish some people would namechange and tell us what outing hobby their spouse had in some other thread.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/09/2019 08:22

My DHs hobbies are Lego, Scouts and getting work to pay for him to go on ski trips.

However my hobbies are Lego, Scouts, and thinking of excuses to get out of skiing. Plus drinking prosecco with a book while he's away skiing. (Prosecco is one of the few drinks which doesn't give me migraines. Wine does)
Perfect match.

Helendee · 13/09/2019 08:23

Lego!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/09/2019 08:24

On another note, for obvious reasons many women on MN are fixated on the phase in family life when children are very young and somebody needs to be with them all the time. This phase eventually ends, hurrah! And life goes on. So not all MAMILs are avoiding family life. Marital life, perhaps, but once kids are in their teens parents are not bathing them and reading them stories. One night or morning a week away from the home is not going to be a problem, as long as the other parent is also getting a break if she/he so wishes.

HepzibahGreen · 13/09/2019 08:25

My husband's hobbies are cured meats and scratch cards, and he has he body of a Greek.

OMGshefoundmeout · 13/09/2019 08:25

My DHs daytime hobby is reclining on the settee watching old B/W movies. In the evenings he might walk down to the local bar to drink beer and talk about sports with some other local couch potatoes. Hope this hasn’t outed me!

Alittleodd · 13/09/2019 08:26

@cranstonmanor I know this wasn't directed at me but thanks!!! You've just sorted out my DH and PIL's joint Xmas present from me!

Although they still haven't been on the distillery tour I bought them last year. So maybe I should just go instead?

Oooh or glass blowing!

berlinbabylon · 13/09/2019 08:27

I think men take up cycling because the padded shorts enhance the size of their package

Cycling kit is completely indecent.

Anyway I went out for a bike ride yesterday evening while DH took DS to his hobby* And I wore lycra.

I agree that cycling takes men away from their families for hours. I am a member of a local cycling club but rarely go out on their rides because they are so long. I am happy to go out for an hour's ride, have a coffee and cake and chat and then ride home. But they start at 9.30 and don't come back until goodness knows when. They do a shorter ride once a month. And then wonder why they don't have many women on the rides. My son is nearly 17, but I still don't want to be out of the house for hours and hours, there are other things to do and also it gets boring after a couple of hours. But certainly if you have younger kids (and more than one) you can't spend the whole of Sunday out on a bike ride. But so many men do.

Allington · 13/09/2019 08:29

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Do you think the new job will last long? We get housing as part of the package, and I am wondering whether to move in completely and sell my flat. I had to get new furniture recently because he spilt red wine on the sofa, but it doesn't really go with the new house, which is quite old fashioned.

ControversialFerret · 13/09/2019 08:29

A lot of you sound no better than a bunch of snarky teenagers wincing about their parents' embarrassing habits.

Really? I must be reading a different thread - I see most of the posts as being humorous, tongue in cheek with a bit of self-deprecation thrown in as well.

Duchessgummybuns · 13/09/2019 08:32

DP’s hobbies are -breaking- fixing cars, motocross, and DJing.

In my job I have to chase small cycling businesses for payments... I often wonder how many mumsnet DHs I speak to on the reg Grin

TomPinch · 13/09/2019 08:32

My husband's hobbies are cured meats

Curing or just eating?

SachaStark · 13/09/2019 08:33

I think the awkwardness of the phrase, “DOING his hobby” is what gets most of us intrigued, as it so clearly points to the missing name of said hobby like a big neon sign.

And I will admit to also being extremely annoyed when a poster says, “Oh, but I couldn’t possibly say what DH’s hobby is, because only ten people on the earth actually do it.” Bollocks, there cannot be any hobby that is only pursued by such a small number of people. What the fuck can it possibly be?!

DH’s hobbies are very mundane: spin class, watching the boxing and MMA, playing beer pong.

I go out dancing a few times a week, read, review books on YouTube, and I also join in with the beer pong on some weeks.
