Stop all this highly irritating coyness.

To be honest, Allington, I can see your DP ending up in a different sort of accommodation soon. Possibly with a fine river view and a resident flock of ravens. I have an inkling that his relationship with his senior manager may have taken a dent. I'd hold fire on that furniture.

Also, look at the Freedom Programme. You can do better than BusMan.

Dyrne · 13/09/2019 08:34

TomPinch Agreed - gentle mocking aside, I don’t understand the genuine disdain some people seem to have for hobbies - if it’s not hurting anyone, and it’s not a detriment to family life, why shouldn’t someone do it and enjoy it? Never understood why playing D&D (actually a really social game) is to be jeered whilst football - a game which literally requires a police presence at big matches to stop people being twats - is perfectly OK.

And anyone wondering what the point of cycling Lycra is - I challenge you to do a 60 mile ride in jeans - then once you’ve got out of the bath of sudocream and stopped walking like John Wayne, we’d be happy to give you some recommendations Grin

TatianaLarina · 13/09/2019 08:34

Oh nooo. I always imagine Mumsnet types as quite weird because they don’t answer the door or the phone. Therefore it’s some weird dungeons and dragon on line thing. (Then they get female friends they text a lot etc )

IKR. They can’t go to weddings or restaurants.

I think those types probably do have gamer DPs, but for the rest it’s likely cycling, walking or sport. Or both.

JaceLancs · 13/09/2019 08:35

Thinking back to past relationships my ex’s have had quite a variety of hobbies
1 Music/festivals/concerts/record collecting/part time DJ job
2 car/motorcycle/boat/steam engine restoration plus model engineering - also volunteered at a museum
3 motorcycle racing and rally car racing
4 motorcycling - doing up old cars
5 antique restoration
6 civil war re enactment, model building, electronics, part time DJ, doing up old cars

I’m only counting long term relationships obviously - there seems to be a bit of a theme going on! Must admit I’m more attracted to men with practical skills than I am sportsmen but each to their own

2girlsandagap · 13/09/2019 08:36

DH has never yet managed to have a hobby that he could do without inconveniencing me. Perhaps pissing me off is his hobby and I’ve merely thought it was fishing?

nononever · 13/09/2019 08:36

I can't sit on a spin bike for any length of time, it's painful, maybe I need some padded shorts! The resort we are going to on an upcoming holiday has bikes and kayaks amongst other various equipment for guest use so hopefully I can make good use of a bike, kayaking will be no problem, love that.

Lovingthesunshine88 · 13/09/2019 08:37

Golf & scuba diving. The scuba diving terrifies me

TatianaLarina · 13/09/2019 08:37

Gaming does not count as a hobby in my book.

Hobbies are fine, they have a point.

AlphaJura · 13/09/2019 08:37

Mine's into gardening and doing things in the shed 🤷🏼‍♀️. He spends his money on tools. His hobby kind of crosses over with work though because he's a builder.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 13/09/2019 08:38

My dh is a cyclist and I think it's brilliant. He is staying fit, has loads more energy, has a good social life around it. I don't understand why people think it's selfish?

yabadabadontdoit · 13/09/2019 08:38

My dh does a sport which is quite unusual. Not that I’ve ever needed to but if I said what it was in a thread, most people who know us would immediately think of him, mainly because he likes everyone to know he used to be at a very high level in it. 🙄

TomPinch · 13/09/2019 08:39

There are some very funny posts I this thread. The one about Henry VIII made me laugh out loud. But all the MAMIL stuff etc... jeez.. it's a shame when a person doesn't grow out of thinking only a few selected passtimes are allowed.

LolaSmiles · 13/09/2019 08:39

Padded shorts are great, as long as you take the time to get the right width/depth pad for you.

The first pair I ever bought I felt like I was waddling around in a chunky nappy.

Now I have a much narrower pad and whilst there's no avoiding lycra bum, rs a bit more comfortable.

nononever · 13/09/2019 08:40

The scuba diving terrifies me

Another of my husband's hobbies. I have done it in the past, it's amazing but unfortunately have an ongoing ear problem which I've been told by my consultant won't stop me diving but I don't believe him!

nononever · 13/09/2019 08:42

The first pair I ever bought I felt like I was waddling around in a chunky nappy.

That's exactly how I imagine them!

ReanimatedSGB · 13/09/2019 08:44

Bear in mind, those of you who judge people who like LARPing, Morris dancing, re-enactment, vintage trains or any other hobby - we are judging the fuck out of you, as well. We think you are all boring, passive consumers without an original thought in your heads, and we really don't want to listen to you going on and on and on about what television programmes you watch.

TwatCat · 13/09/2019 08:45

DH doesn't have a hobby.
He just hangs around the house after work under my feet the whole time and BREATHES!!!

Dyrne · 13/09/2019 08:46

Getting back to the thread, I disagree that MN doesn’t always need to know the hobby, because sometimes it does affect the quality of the advice.

So with cycling, it’s easy to give the advice that he should maybe limit it to a couple of hours a week, with maybe one ‘long’ ride a month or so while the children are young. That advice is completely useless for something like Rowing or Rugby, where there's an entire team and scheduled training sessions which you have to attend to stay in.

You can! There are blacksmithing workshops where you can make a knife or a garden ornament in a day or maybe two. Just google it, it's fun to try out new things once in a while.

Well that’s my Christmas present from DP sorted!

Ihatesundays · 13/09/2019 08:46

DH has 2 random very specialised hobbies. I can’t imagine anyone else does them, it would be really identifying for anyone who knew us!

glueandstick · 13/09/2019 08:48

@Allington
Screwing up the country must be exhausting work for him Wink

sugarplumfairy28 · 13/09/2019 08:51

DH is musical, plays guitar and bass, but also acts as a stand in for drums and piano sometimes. He played the drums as DS's leaving assembly at school. He was part of a band but it was too time consuming as we have SN daughter who is currently in a crisis situation.

DH is also a prominent member of an online racing group, that uses the same software that F1 test simulators use.

1FineDane · 13/09/2019 08:52

Oh I once dated a guy and I don't actually know the name of the hobby but it basically involved a sort of table thing and they had little toy soldiers and they'd re-enact battles or something. Now that was one muddafucking waste of time. I was like 'how the fuck do you know who wins?'. There was a long complicated explanation given, but fucked if I can remember it.

Lepetitpiggy · 13/09/2019 08:52

Mine's is Cricket - playing it all sodding summer, watching it all sodding year and talking about it everywhere we go. Could be worse though - except for the broken fingers, nose, ribs and head he comes back with regularly...

HepzibahGreen · 13/09/2019 08:54

Curing or just eating?
Just eating at present but he pines for a house with a cellar "for curing meat".
If he starts collecting ties I'll know for sure he's a serial killer.

TomPinch · 13/09/2019 08:56

Lepetitpiggy

Cricket, he says? Err.. his bat doesn't have a nail hammered through it by any chance?
