Stop all this highly irritating coyness.

@ReanimatedSGB You've definitely got a point! Whilst I agree that sodding off to cycle Landsend to JOG while you wife is at home with 2 kids under 2 is pretty selfish, the really intense parenting stage only lasts a few years and there is no reason why parents with slightly older DC shouldn't indulge a bit more time in hobbies/sports which may include (shock horror) being away from the family for a few hours or days. It's definitely a good thing for mental health to have passions outside career and family life

Luckily both DH and I both have 'hobbies' (in other words we are both fond of donning lycra on a weekend Wink) so we don't begrudge each other having some time out. Now the DC are teens we even sometimes enjoy our 'hobby' together!

CorBlimeyGovenor · 13/09/2019 07:59

@EmilyStar

You can't just tell us about your husband's amazing marble runs and NOT post pictures!! It's too late for that!

kunderscorej · 13/09/2019 07:59

Another one for photography here.... I'm surprised there aren't more! Any excuse to spend obscene amount of money on lenses...

ControversialFerret · 13/09/2019 08:00

DH cycles and plays golf. He doesn't take himself too seriously - refers to himself as a MAMIL and a terror on the course. That info must immediately identify us!

He's pretty good though, rides and golf dates go in the calendar and he disappears off early so that he's back by mid-morning at the latest. Plus we don't have kids so that makes it easier.

I'm all for sending him out - it means that I can potter round enjoying my garden on my own.

LaLoba · 13/09/2019 08:01

And as for those talking about how sexy their cycling husband is - err... have you seen bib shorts? Instant fanny-shriveller

You’ve never seen my husband’s glorious bum, clearly. 😂

LolaSmiles · 13/09/2019 08:01

Dyrne
Sorry about that just you know as well as I do the amount of unpleasantness towards anyone having hobbies on here.
The cycling ones are predictable and theres some folk on here who are repeeatedly ridiculous over it. I play bingo in my head waiting for the clichéd digs.

Chamois cream... Eugh... Just no. I mountain bike and haven't venture to that level yet but when I was complaining of a sore bum a friend suggested it. In my head it's like smothering vaseline on your bumGrin

averylongtimeago · 13/09/2019 08:01

No one has mentioned army cadets or scouting.

winewolfhowls · 13/09/2019 08:02

I would like it if my husband dressed up as an elf. At least its fresh air.

HennyPennyHorror · 13/09/2019 08:02

"Doing his hobby"

That's what they always say. And it sounds AWKWARD like that!

Why not just say "DH was golfing" or whatever!?

BenWillbondsPants · 13/09/2019 08:03

@LolaSmiles I wouldn't take this thread so seriously, it's clear that most people are just messing about.

I'm married to a cyclist by the way. 😂

nononever · 13/09/2019 08:03

I really want to be into photography. We have a very expensive Canon and multiple lenses stored in boxes because we are too bloody lazy to learn to use them properly and I went back to my Canon compact. My friend's I year old has offered to teach me!

nononever · 13/09/2019 08:03

9 year old, not 1!!

ControversialFerret · 13/09/2019 08:04

To be fair, I wouldn't want to admit it if I was married to a cyclist.

Eh? Why on earth not? He's not off murdering people and hiding the bodies! I bloody loathe cycling; I've never found a comfortable saddle and it's bloody boring. But he enjoys it, it keeps him fit and I spend just as much money - if not more - buying plants and things for my garden, as he does on his bike, so it's win-win.

KUGA · 13/09/2019 08:05

Leaving lids off bottles/jars etc.
It must be his hobby as he does it every day.

IdiotInDisguise · 13/09/2019 08:06

everyone I know who fox hunts is pretty open about it! Plus much fun can be had when they get home knackered, still in hunt gear but ready to chase again when they see you naked bar a pair of fluffy ears, clutching a bottle of champagne & yelling "view hulloo" before you scamper off.

The people I know who were into that would never openly talk about it unless they were with other fox hunters. Try to find the meet of a hunt that is not yours and you will se how secretive it could be. Obviously there are some traditional ones who everyone knows when they take place because they have been taking place in the same day and spot for decades. But otherwise is very secretive and, rightfully, shameful.

@FenellaVelour
"Many games are effectively interactive stories, often where moral decisions you make can change the entire course of the tale. They’re richer and more intelligent than a lot of TV programmes."

So much this! I've never understood how passively watching TV is somehow morally and intellectually superior to problem solving and weaving a narrative based on a logic system you have taken the time to comprehend and work out how to manipulate.

All of which is still somehow more nerdy than memorising tables of data and statistics about how well someone kicks a ball under different circumstance.

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 13/09/2019 08:06

@averylongtimeago army cadets is a massive time commitment but so important to keeping it running. If you have a CFAV at home or you are one, the hours put in are much appreciated!

bookwormsforever · 13/09/2019 08:06

Marble runs? And collecting suits?

Fabulous! Nice to see men with hobbies that aren't cycling...

DH birdwatches and fishes.

ControversialFerret · 13/09/2019 08:07

I'm with you on that one Grin I love the bones of DH and he's got a great bum(!), but fucking hell some of the gear he has to wear is deeply unattractive.

Sockypuppet · 13/09/2019 08:08

Yeah I regularly see packs of middle-aged men running or cycling in the evenings, avoiding bedtime.

Though if I had to chose I'd rather have a partner who did that, rather than a grown adult playing video games (shudder).

LaLoba · 13/09/2019 08:09

@LolaSmiles
Once I discovered bib shorts disguised the muffin top and builders bum I previously had every time I sat on my bike, I never looked back. When I go out today I’ll be wondering if mumsnetters are tutting at my middle aged unattractiveness and pitying my poor martyred husband. Not really. 😉

bellinisurge · 13/09/2019 08:10

My dh wants one and doesn't have one. I have a few.

ControversialFerret · 13/09/2019 08:11

Is your hobby ghost-writing for Jilly Cooper?

stucknoue · 13/09/2019 08:12

When I see hobby I think of something quirky, why not just put sport if it's a sport?

Wherearemyminions · 13/09/2019 08:12

DH doesn't have hobbies as such but he is a tinkerer, disappears for ages into the garage and bangs about like Roobarb in his shed then emerges with something he has made. To be fair, he's very good at it, fixes pretty much anything and can make all sorts. I'll casually say, oh I could do with x, y or z and he'll go all misty eyed and say "I'm pretty sure I have a, b or c in the garage, leave it with me..."
