To think that anyone that thinks Ed Sheeran isn't talented hasn't got a clue!

Just been listening to some of his stuff and he has dueted with so many different styles of people and is so versatile as both a singer and a song writer. If you can't see that you must be blind...

I think Galway Girl is a masterpiece

Lifebi · 13/09/2019 00:15

but not Eds version

dontgobaconmyheart · 13/09/2019 01:23

He makes me cringe to be honest. The constant plagiarism is bad enough and songs about getting drunk at the pub and speeding and 'pretty little galway girl' are enough to induce a heavy eye roll. And there's that song where he talks about friends back home and says ' one's already on his second wife's (how rude) and ones just barely getting by! (Help him out then ed!) Granted some of them are catchy enough but he himself is not for me.

This is so niche but back in the day there was an (awful but so bad it was good) programme called Britannia high, basically a UK programme that was supposed to be the next big thing, loads of celebs involved. Anyway I watched it on DVD and the extras had the auditions. A young fresh out of stage school Ed Sheeran was present and correct, impressing absolutely nobody and begging for a part because he wanted to be famous. Arlene and Gary Barlow didn't want to cast him bless him, he even tried dancing for them while they looked on awkwardly at the effort. Not sure he is quite the authentic undiscovered indie talent people think he is tbh, and this nonsense endless complaint about the perils of fame and desperation for privacy all whilst booking in your next tour.

Laughing to myself at how bothered I sound when I couldn't really give a fig and don't even mind his songs but there it is!

Poppins2016 · 13/09/2019 01:48

People seem to equate talent with whether or not something is to their taste.

I agree. I also think people seem to feel that 'unique' or 'different' sounding musicians are somehow more talented than their 'mainstream' counterparts (which I'd disagree with)...

I've watched lots of interview with Ed and I've never heard him complain. He's said that he's uncomfortable with fame and that it's caused him to suffer with anxiety but he knows it goes with the job. His love for what he does always comes across but I'm sure he is desperate for privacy in his personal life and I think that's to be expected. I really don't get the level of hatred some people have for people they don't know especially ones who come across as nice people.

user764329056 · 13/09/2019 03:01

His songs all seem contrived to me and some just sickly sweet

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 13/09/2019 07:00

I'm glad a PP mentioned how grim 'now my bedsheets smell like you' is.

I really want to like him, he genuinely comes across as a nice guy, but I just can't. I doubt he's losing any sleep over it though!

proseccoaficionado · 13/09/2019 07:11

We've been to his live concert this year. It was AMAZING. The man does it all himself

ImpracticalCape · 13/09/2019 08:46

Breathless comments about him 'doing it all himself' are hilarious. How utterly dull. Going to a stadium gig to see a little man with a guitar and maybe a Bontempi sing a couple of ballads. Surely you see them on every town street corner.

Last gig I saw was the Prodigy. Apart from Keith (RIP) shouting I reckon the lot was on tape but hells bells it was amazing. Apple Watch said I'd burned 1800 calories!

I'm sure people love him and that's cool but I don't get this easy listening stuff which is touted as being amazing due to some one writing a song and then playing it. It's not my thing. I couldnt imagine standing watching it for a couple of hours.

Adele came to NZ and sold out about 5 nights in a stadium. What do you DO in a gig like that? Stand and sway gently?

lazylinguist · 13/09/2019 11:12

Yep - I don't get the amazement at him 'doing it all himself' either. Surely most bands/singers do it all themselves until they are lucky enough to be discovered/get popular. And let's face it, a lot of that is luck. What proportion of really talented musicians ever hit the big time? I go to a fair few folk gigs - amazingly talented musicians, singers and songwriters. They all do it all themselves.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 13/09/2019 22:18

...ones just barely getting by! (Help him out then ed!)

Uh, have you seen the video? It’s about him and his friends as kids. The one barely getting by is the ginger haired one, himself. Grin

RuffleCrow · 13/09/2019 22:18

Oh come on, Adele isn't in the same league as Ed - she's genuinely talented - fantastically gifted vocally and at her best capable of conveying emotion better than almost anyone else contemporary. Her first album is the most 'her' though - mainly her own compositions and the closest to her natural wit and accent. And she plays bass pretty well on some tracks.

Honeyroar · 13/09/2019 22:23

He alright, he's milking his moment for all its worth because even he knows it won't last more than a few years. It's nice background music, but doesn't set the world on fire. I thought he was deathly boring to watch at Glastonbury, and he drives me mad popping up on Game of Thrones etc., but he seems a nice enough chap.

Peakypolly · 13/09/2019 22:28

FamilyOfAliens Grin I went to Suffolk because I was given tickets to his homecoming gig. So that is why I gave Ed the credit. Sorry I wasn’t very clear.

Evilmorty · 13/09/2019 22:29

Talented? Maybe.
Insipid as hell? Definitely.
Overplayed? Absolutely.

We aren’t blind (or deaf), just bored shitless and prefer our tunes with some spice.

Not sure he is quite the authentic undiscovered indie talent people think he is tbh

This is correct, he was championed and mentored by Elton John.

He used to busk on the street, I know for sure because I saw him. He played the local free music festival, again I saw him there and he used to play in the local pub. (A few years ago he played there again but with no publicity at all, just pitched up).

I don’t like his music, and yes he might well have been championed by bigger musicians but he he did genuinely work his way up.
(Nice middle class family though in a nice small middle class town though)
