To think that anyone that thinks Ed Sheeran isn't talented hasn't got a clue!

Just been listening to some of his stuff and he has dueted with so many different styles of people and is so versatile as both a singer and a song writer. If you can't see that you must be blind...

My mum dislikes him. The thing is there is nothing to be offended about. I can understand people might not actively like him, but I feel to dislike someone takes a lot of effort, rather than just saying meh he's easy listening. I really love some of his songs, some are not so much to my taste, but there is no artist that everything they do appears to everyone. I appreciate he writes himself and I would call myself a fan but I've not seen him live or anything.

I sing a song I've made up to my DS and I've no idea if I've taken the tune from song from I've already heard?! But I think it's a future classic !

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 11/09/2019 22:57

He’s extremely talented.

I think that's a bit much..

Bowie was Extremely talented.
Dylan, Cash, Lennon, Hendrix, Clapton etc etc etc..
He's nowhere near their league and never will be.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 11/09/2019 22:57

He's talented yes, but my god I think he's dull. I'd rather watch paint dry than see him live.

QueenofallIsee · 11/09/2019 22:59

Not a fan over here but I can’t deny ‘Castle on the Hill’ is bloody good songwriting. I am a Shropshire girl whose profession takes me away to cities a lot, and he captured that coming home feeling perfectly for me.

I say that as someone who goes annually to Download and that watched Lamb of God play not long ago

IamMoana · 11/09/2019 23:02

I really like supermarket flowers (sorry).

Sparrowlegs248 · 11/09/2019 23:09

It's radio music, to sing to in the car, imo. Radio 2 at that. Grin I accidentally saw him live at a festival a few years ago. Bland. Boring. Not at all what I want from live music. I watched a couple of songs from afar then moved on.

Propertyofhood · 11/09/2019 23:15

Is that you Mrs Sheeran?!

I am all about the mainstream pop, but even I find Ed Sheeran Bland. It's so contrived and the way he writes the 'wedding first dance song' (several times actually), the 'funeral song', the 'Pop anthem song', the 'background to TV clips song' etc etc.

Plus there is the absolute abomination that is Galway Girl. WTF? I cannot believe that Beoga got on board with that, but then again I guess the opportunity for the exposure of working with him was too good a one to pass on, so I don't blame them really.

He makes his mates out to be a bunch of absolute losers though! 😂

And did you drive at 90 down old country lanes? I'm pretty sure he didn't...

Peakypolly · 11/09/2019 23:22

Well he pays more tax in the UK than Amazon I believe.
He rips the piss out of himself rapping in the movie ‘Yesterday’.
And I visited Suffolk for the first time in 15 years to see him, and was reminded how pretty and friendly the county is.
So yep, I don’t mind Ed.

kierenthecommunity · 11/09/2019 23:25

You’ve heard the part of it when he sings about what his mates have been up to in life, and just shoe horning in any old crap that rhymes, right? 😂

Admittedly it’s not as offensive as Galway Girl or the loathe some Shape of You. He sounds like a randy old sex pest in that one.

Rachelover60 · 12/09/2019 01:13

He's talented, very good voice but I can't say I like him that much. There are others I prefer.

FamilyOfAliens · 12/09/2019 06:39

I don’t think Ed Sheehan can take the credit for that.

You like the song because of the sentiment. Lyrically it's shit.

PrincessPain · 12/09/2019 07:04

Been living in a metal, nursery rhymes and 90s r&b bubble recently depending on who's in the house and what I'm doing.
Off to listen to some Ed. . .

Lagatha · 12/09/2019 07:12

I think it's lovely of his mum to take the time to join MN and start this lovely thread.
Can't believe no one has mentioned the god awful A Team.

Spidey66 · 12/09/2019 07:20

He's good at what he does. Such a shame what he does is bland and dull.

HennyPennyHorror · 12/09/2019 07:24

He IS talented but his lyrics are hackneyed and embarrassing.

malificent7 · 12/09/2019 07:38

His live shows are good...saw him at Glasto with just him and his guitar...talented...but too ubiqutous!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 12/09/2019 07:56

He has a modicum of talent, but he is just so twee and dull I'd rather hack my ears off with a rusty spoon than listen to one of his albums. And he should be shot for Galway Girl!

bumblingbovine49 · 12/09/2019 08:04

I haven't listen to any modern music for about 10 years I know who Ed Sheeran is and know what he looks like but I wouldn't recognise any of his songs if I heard them.

I would only recognise a handful of Adele's really big hit songs from years ago. I don't really understand how people find it impossible to avoid a musician, especially nowadays when you are in control of what you listen to and these is much more choice of ways to listen

yellowallpaper · 12/09/2019 08:08

Most of his songs say something special to someone and really touches them. Similar to Adele. Of course not everyone experiences that, but enough do to enjoy his music.

BringTheBounceBack · 12/09/2019 08:12

I’ve gone off him a bit, he’s being pulled up for a lot of copying others but he just throws hush money at them.

Recently I saw a vid with him and Stormzy and that made me cringe.

bumblingbovine49 · 12/09/2019 08:16

Ok.ok .The vast majority of times I learn something on MN it is interesting or fun or useful but I have just listened to Galway Girl out of interest and my life has not been in any way enhanced by the experience. In fact I'd say my life is a tiny bit worse for having listened to it !!!

I will listen to some of his other stuff just out of interest but Galway Girls really is awful .

LittleSweet · 12/09/2019 08:16

I think he's bland and generic. I don't understand his popularity.

The80sweregreat · 12/09/2019 08:18
  • wasn't a bad first album. X has some lovely tunes. Divide is the worst yet the critics loved it. I like one or two tracks but Galway girl should have been ditched. I'm waiting for ' minus' with a red cover..
