...to not have a clue where to live in Yorkshire

We (me, DH, DS (14), DD (9) may be moving to Yorkshire in the next few months. DH's job will be to the east of Leeds. We have a budget of around £270-300,000 for a 4/5 bedroom house, which seems to be doable in the local area but... where in the lcoal area?

DH has put a pin in a map and suggested Selby. He doesn't want to live in Leeds (long story, but he doesn't love cities) and has found a few new developments around the town. I know nothing about Selby (we're currently in the Midlands). Please tell me about Selby! Anyone live there? Suitable for a teenager? For me?

Please help?

Have you looked at York? Not far from Selby, good road and rail links and wonderful place to live with good schools, great city centre etc etc.

Garforth? Close enough for your teen to get to Leeds. I don't know Selby but judging by a recent thread I don't think there's much to recommend it!

York is horrifically expensive, and Selby is seen as drugs capital of the area (from where I am, further North, where we may be a bit biased). I don't think you'll find much affordable out this way towards the NYM but maybe look a bit further south?

Your budget won't go as far in York.

A few years ago, Snaith (village south of Selby) was touted as the new up and coming place to live for access to Leeds.

There's lots of nice looking villages out that way, nice countryside, nature reserves etc. No idea about schools or anything that a teenager would want, or you for that matter - what sort of work would you be looking for and would you be looking for somewhere accessible by public transport?

How far East of Leeds is his job, and what sort of commute are you looking for.

Do you prefer town or village living?

What do you want from your new local area?
What expectations do you have of Yorkshire? (that area is not how many people perceive Yorkshire to be)

I have friends in Harrogate and it’s a lovely place. Depending on area you may find something in your budget.

My cousin lives in Ilkley it’s lovely there.

How far east of Leeds? There are some stunning places in that part of Yorkshire. And some not-so-stunning. There are much nicer places than Selby.

Wetherby is vair naice, and much cheaper than Harrogate or York.

But the nicest places are west of Leeds. Saltaire, Ilkley, Halifax, Haworth etc. If you go south, Honley/Holmfirth are beautiful.

You'd get a lot for your money in PonteCarlo

How do people perceive Yorkshire Moobaa?

It's a large and diverse county, so you can probably find pretty much any sort of experience/people/landscape etc etc from gritty inner cities with drugs and gun crime to unspoilt upland wilderness where you could walk for miles without seeing a soul.

If the DHs job is east of Leeds, they almost certainly don't want to be living to the west, unless he likes sitting in traffic jams or cramming himself onto extremely overcrowded trains.

You need to get up there, spend a weekend, drive around- see what you like.

Trains from Selby to Leeds are erratic (says she currently sat on the only one this morning that wasn’t cancelled or late). Selby is a depressed ex mining town so a bit neglected and rough. Selby High has a reputation. However there are lots of lovely villages around - look at Howden which has a good secondary, or villages around (Snaith as above but it’s rural and you’re dependent on a car / not much public transport. There are lots and pleasantly surprising. We moved to a village outside of Selby 13 years ago and moved because we fell in love with the house. We lived in Wakey and having moved here were surprised at how many nice villages there are around. If you want, post some options when you find some...

What about the West Hull villages? Or even Brough? There's a train station at Brough serving Hull, Leeds and London (amongst other places!)

Fair point @BarbaraofSeville, but if he wfhs a lot - or particularly likes the sights and sounds of the m62 - it may be worth considering!!

BarbaraofSeville that's my point, Yorkshire is huge. But lots of people only think of quaint Dales market towns with stunning scenery when they think Yorkshire.

Which is why I asked what OPs expectations are, and what she want from the local area, Plus how long a commute they are willing to do.
All sensible questions really, so people could advice the best place for OP.

Not Selby OP..its run down its not as it used to be I promise you.What you need is a weekend up here to do your own reaserch. I would go north leeds...Horsforth,..yeadon,rawdon,guiseley and further out ,,,easily commutable.Have a google suburbs of leeds then read there write ups.

Have a look at Methley- has a village feel around 20 minutes from Leeds city centre, Shadwell/Wyke area for lovely countryside or Boston Spa/Wetherby for more town feel. However don't be too surprised if £270-£300 thousand doesn't go quite as far as you may expect, house prices have really shot up in the last few years around Leeds, especially in the more desirable areas

Ilkley is lovely, in your situation I would move there. Great schools, a huge lido which is great in the summer, Ilkley Moor and other beautiful countryside for walks and bike rides, a picturesque town centre with decent shops and restaurants, Betty's Tea Room... it's very safe and great for kids. About 1/2 hour on the train from Leeds.

I grew up in Garforth, my brother still lives in Kippax whilst my parents now live in Brayton, south of Selby.

Sherburn in Elmet is nice enough, small enough, good transport links both road and rail.

I have friends who moved to Pontefract, and I think there's a lot to be said for it - even though it gets written off all the time as just being Pontecarlo/Casvegas. 15 minutes drive from Leeds, excellent transport links (manages to have 3 train stations and there are direct trains to Leeds, London, to York and you're conveniently located for the M62 and M1), affordable housing (my friends live on new-ish estates, lovely and quiet, with friendly neighbours), open/outdoor green spaces (the racecourse is a lovely walk), the outlet and xscape are so incredibly convenient to live nearby, and increasingly lots of lovely places to eat/drink/hang out like Bake My Day in Castleford. And certainly more convenient for "east of Leeds" than many other places suggested so far!

Agree Howden is nice & has a train station.

Really? They're unlikely to get much for her budget in those places and the traffic and trains are awful. Have you actually driven in and around Leeds in the last 10/20 years?

To get to east Leeds from the north side, the absolute furthest west the OP should look at would be Shadwell.

Personally depending in how far to east of leeds the job is. I'd go for East Yorkshire on the other side of the Ouse, Howden, North cave, South cave, brough, Melton, Swanland, North Ferriby, further afield Hessle, Cottingham...... All depends on compute though.
