...to not have a clue where to live in Yorkshire

We (me, DH, DS (14), DD (9) may be moving to Yorkshire in the next few months. DH's job will be to the east of Leeds. We have a budget of around £270-300,000 for a 4/5 bedroom house, which seems to be doable in the local area but... where in the lcoal area?

DH has put a pin in a map and suggested Selby. He doesn't want to live in Leeds (long story, but he doesn't love cities) and has found a few new developments around the town. I know nothing about Selby (we're currently in the Midlands). Please tell me about Selby! Anyone live there? Suitable for a teenager? For me?

Please help?

I would seriously look at Garforth OP there's no need for DH to commute when he will be working in a perfectly nice place! DP works in east Garforth (Isabella road) and lives just off Ninelands lane so most days he walks as it's only 20 mins and seems silly driving. It's definitely an 'up and coming' suburb and if you want a new build the ones going up on Ninelands Lane currently are lovely and opposite one of the primary schools. The springs retail park which has opened up 5 mins away has been life changing too Grin. Your only 10 mins on the train from Leeds city centre, 5 mins to the m1 and 10 mins to the m62. Also 25/30 mins to York.
Other places I would suggest you look would be Rothwell or South Milford, I'm looking move in with DP next year (we are currently in a LDR so half my life is spent in Garforth) and we'll be looking at staying in Garforth or South Milford.

www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/52336558 this is the house I'm eyeing up at the minute!!

sunshinesupermum · 12/09/2019 10:48

issano what a stunning house! Good luck.

issano · 12/09/2019 13:00

Sunshinesupermum sadly I'm not in a position to relocate until next summer so highly doubt it will still be available! I really should stop spending my nights looking at Zoopla Grin

Personally I consider Street lane Roundhay though if you want to be a pedant you could call it Moortown

Chapel Allerton

So it's not entirely out of reach at all! I'm just saying it's a lovely area. I also like Garforth and love the high street there so that would be a good choice too!

My aunt lives in a village called Newby, it’s between Clapham and ingleton. I love it up there and would move in a heartbeat although I do like settle, skipton. Even Kirkby Lonsdale.

There's some lovely ideas for days out strewn among the sensible places to live on this thread.Grin

lokijet · 13/09/2019 00:56

have a look at knaresborough or ripon - good access tot A1 and good schools

FuckFacePlatapus · 13/09/2019 01:03

Harrogate, York, Northallerton, Thirsk and Ripon, or Richmond?

RosesAndRaindrops · 13/09/2019 01:13

OMG, sorry, don't want to be rude but have you read the thread?
Those suggestions are looking at a 20- 30 mile approx one way commute! So that'll be 40 to 60 miles a day, just no lol.
Garforth is absolutely no-where near. Yorkshire is a big place!

NorberErratics · 13/09/2019 01:20

But more nice day out ideas, three of those have a Betty's.

Tojigornot · 13/09/2019 01:22

Garforth is totally fine, I’d start looking there. It’s a no brainer. I quite like Rothwell and Woodlesford too.
Don’t even think about Guiseley - you could probably walk to east Leeds faster than you can drive in rush hour.

If you want less city, Beverley is really nice and it’s not actually a bad commute to east Leeds. I used to do Hull to central Leeds, sometimes train and sometimes driving, and it was totally fine.

MrsFezziwig · 13/09/2019 01:30

RosesAndRaindrops YABVVU to imagine that someone has actually read the thread.

Anyway, I’m off to plan my day trip to Selby.

Tojigornot · 13/09/2019 01:31

Also if you prefer sunshine to rain, go for East Yorkshire rather than anywhere in the vicinity of Leeds.

15thOctober2019 · 13/09/2019 01:32

You need to keep east of the A1 to avoid the traffic congestion if possible, or just adjacent to the A1 on the other side.

Ripon has rubbish access to the A1 going South?

Well, that's true lol
I'm just reading some of these replies and laughing Grin
Selby's fine, people say it's a dump (but that's usually the people who've never moved away and don't know any different, there's a lot of them! Grin )
It's a nice town, has its problems but doesn't any town?
If OP has a budget of 300k that'd get her a spacious house in Garforth itself. Garfortb is a decent place, somewhere nice to live.

RubbingHimSweetly · 13/09/2019 02:28

Tadcaster has good bus links to both Leeds and York. Garforth is good for train links to Leeds, york and beyond. Bramham, Aberford, Stutton are also nice but more isolated. It's a lovely area.
