...to not have a clue where to live in Yorkshire

We (me, DH, DS (14), DD (9) may be moving to Yorkshire in the next few months. DH's job will be to the east of Leeds. We have a budget of around £270-300,000 for a 4/5 bedroom house, which seems to be doable in the local area but... where in the lcoal area?

DH has put a pin in a map and suggested Selby. He doesn't want to live in Leeds (long story, but he doesn't love cities) and has found a few new developments around the town. I know nothing about Selby (we're currently in the Midlands). Please tell me about Selby! Anyone live there? Suitable for a teenager? For me?

Please help?

Tadcaster would be my choice. Definitely east of Leeds so a quick journey. Big enough to have a 'centre'. A great secondary school. If you wanted a village I'd say Aberford, but Tadcaster has a lot more going on.

JacquesHammer · 11/09/2019 08:43

How would he be commuting?

You could do outlying village (with station) to Leeds, then train to East Garforth pretty easily which increases your options.

RogersVideo · 11/09/2019 09:16

I live in Selby, I think it's fine. As some others say, it's a bit rough round the edges but I've been perfectly happy here for 4 years. My kids aren't school age yet so I don't really have advice on what life is like for teens.

When DH got his job in Leeds, we visited various places and Selby "clicked" for us. We are looking to move to a slightly larger house in the next couple years and did a recce again recently, this time Skipton clicked for us.

RosesAndRaindrops · 11/09/2019 14:18

Yes, @Suburbubble as others have said, how would he be commuting?
(Sorry if you've already answered) just it makes a lot of difference in answers of villages etc how easy it is to commute to if we know whether he'd be public transport or driving.

OldGrinch · 11/09/2019 14:26

Some of the places mentioned are going to be well out of your budget. Places like Horseforth, York and Harrogate are £££. I would recommend Brough/Elloughton nice suburban feel, you can get a modern 4 bed within your budget. Also older houses if you prefer. All amenities, station at Brough and hourly trains to Leeds takes about 40 minutes.

OldGrinch · 11/09/2019 14:30

Sorry forgot to say Selby know as v rough and drugs. Have never actually lived there.

OldGrinch · 11/09/2019 14:33

I would also say look at Tadcaster, v good schools, but a lot more expensive than Brough. Brough also has good schools nearby, South Hunsley school good.

Yes, Brough all well and good and only 40 mins by train - you'd need to change trains at Selby though or get the Leeds train back in the Selby direction to East Garforth, so would be two trains and well over an hour!
OP, where have you gone, how will he be getting to Garforth lol?!

RosesAndRaindrops · 11/09/2019 14:36

Oh OK, just seen you can get a train Brough to Garforth - that isn't East Garforth though so would probably have a fair walk on top of that!

britnay · 11/09/2019 14:37

I would go Tadcaster, its about 20 mins from Garforth along the back roads, so no A64/A1/M1 if you don't want to fight that traffic

RitaMorenoMuppetShow · 11/09/2019 14:50

I'm from near Selby and went to school in York. My dad still lives in Selby.

Don't move to Selby!

Even by the standards of depressed northern towns, it's depressing.

Haven't RTFT but there seems to be lots of good advice on here.

I lived in London for 15 years and now live in West Yorkshire (love it - but wrong side of Leeds for you).

Tadcaster is quite nice. Wetherby a bit nice-but-boring. Villages - anywhere on the A19 into York north of Riccall are fine. Villages on the A64 between Leeds and York are quite nice - Bishopthorpe, Copmanthorpe, etc.

Your kids will thank you if you're on a half-decent bus/train ride into York (even better if they can get to Leeds too) as there is a reasonable amount of stuff to do for teenagers.

I work near moortown/shardwell. Not sure on house prices but it's quite nice?

Wonkydonkey44 · 11/09/2019 15:04

Loving the people who say don’t live in selby but either don’t live there or haven’t lived there in years Confused
Loads of lovely villages around selby , brayton , Wistow , Cawood .
Selby has lots of good schools and high schools. Excellent trains to Leeds and even London direct .
New leisure centre and a high street like any other ( few too many charity shops but hey that’s the local councils fault)
Best bet is to go and take a look Smile

I have lived in a wood, barley and wistow.

OP scpeofically says that as a teen it used to annoy her that her parents would have to drive her everywhere.

The public transport links to selby from Cawood ans Wistow are horrendous. If her teen wants to go to leeds, getting the selby osnt particularly easy. And those villages house are quite pricey and still flood.

Plus, if the bridge is closed or has an issue. Cawood to York is difficult too.

LemonGingerCakes · 11/09/2019 15:13

Although Garforth itself would be the obvious choice. (Rent and check out the areas first??j

BarbaraofSeville · 11/09/2019 15:30

That would be madness Lemon.

Why on earth would they live in the local area which is perfectly nice and perfectly affordable when they could live at the other side of the city in an area that is subjectively nicer and therefore more expensive, the schools are harder to get into and it takes a good hour for the DH to get to work, whichever means he will be using. Grin

JacquesHammer · 11/09/2019 15:38

and it takes a good hour for the DH to get to work

I think you’re getting on the wrong trains. Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 11/09/2019 15:45

The shortest station to station Horsforth to Garforth journey on google maps is 44 minutes. Some are an hour, depending on connections.

Also, unless they live next to both stations, obviously he needs to get to and from the station, so you only need a 5/10 minute walk at each end to get up to an hour, and that's assuming that the trains run on time (ha!) and the times are convenient for his work start time. Both trains are only every 30 minutes, so he might need to be 20/25 minutes early just to be at work on time, so wasted time.

And driving from Horsforth to Garforth in rush hour often takes an hour, I've done it many times unfortunately.

JacquesHammer · 11/09/2019 15:49

Sure. In reality that isn’t always the case though. I live in the arse-end of nowhere (not Leeds) and can be in to Leeds and out to outlying area (similar train journey time to East Garforth) in 40 mins even with a train every 30mins.

The easiest thing for the OP would be decide how he’s commuting and work backwards. I certainly wouldn’t discount anywhere without checking journey time.

libertine80 · 11/09/2019 16:13

I also live in Selby and actually think that a lot of the anti-Selby posts are hilariously outdated. If actually really look into the crime statistics as actually crime is genuinely very low. The locals seem to have a poor opinion of the town which is obviously reflected here.

As other say, the town is really worth having a look around - the Abbey totally blew me away when I first saw it. I would like to add that I've choose to live in Selby itself having a teenager when we moved as the bus links are terrible from some of the villages. We live in the Leeds Road area which is the most expensive area of the town but we wanted to be able to walk into the town centre. You have had some excellent recommendations about what is currently in the town. I would like to add Selby Town Hall as it is a lovely venue. We saw Edinburgh Festival previews for £7 for two shows in the summer there. Mollie Sharps Cheese Shop which really is excellent too.

Booboostwo · 11/09/2019 16:55

I used to live outside Tadcaster and commute to central Leeds within half an hour (then another half hour to park but that’s another story). Tadcaster is OK, it’s a weird town, ‘owned’ by a local family who do as they please and have very odd ideas. Tadcaster Grammar has a good reputation and the villages around the area are nice. No trains though.

footchewer · 11/09/2019 17:12

How close to the centre of Leeds is the job? Is a train commute viable?

LemonGingerCakes · 11/09/2019 19:37

MrsGrindah · 11/09/2019 19:41

Unless you want to provide unlimited taxi services for the teens you need to think about public transport links to and from Leeds City Centre wherever you end up !
