DH and I are having a mini-war over cat poo Blush

He thinks it is entirely reasonable to bag up poo from the cat litter tray and put it in the kitchen bin, which is emptied every few days. I think this is fucking repulsive and stinks the kitchen out, and cat poo, bagged or otherwise, does not belong in a kitchen. His position is "it's not reasonable to expect me to traipse out to the wheelybin every time I empty the litter tray". If I pick up poo I put it in the outside bin (because I'm not a minging pig and don't want faeces in my kitchen)

The teenagers are (loudly) siding with him. I'm right, aren't I? It's gross?

Oh thanks @Jux! I had no idea! I just thought poo= toilet! Blush

doublebarrellednurse · 08/09/2019 23:43

I was today years old before I knew you couldn't flush cat poo.

Good job they refuse to go inside 🙄

IdiotInDisguise · 08/09/2019 23:50

Have the tray in the bathroom and flush the poo down as soon as you find it.

IdiotInDisguise · 08/09/2019 23:50

OH, I missed that, why not? (Off to revread the thread)

Gwenhwyfar · 09/09/2019 00:12

How do you think people cope who don't have an outside space?

Babyiwantabump · 09/09/2019 00:15

Haven’t read the full thread but your DH is being unreasonable.

We have a small metal bin outside the back door for nappy bags with nappies/cat poo in that then gets put into a black bag when full. Could you do something similar?

Meirou90 · 09/09/2019 00:52

Can’t believe people leave shit festering in their kitchen bins, absolutely disgusting bagged or not.

I have two cats who refuse to toilet outside. Their tray is emptied daily because cat poo and wee is the most disgusting smell to me, even once it’s out my house the smell still lingers. It even disturbs me the thought of it bagged up and stinking out the wheely bin. Your husband is totally in the wrong and probably nose blind, guests will be able to smell something off.

SpaceCadet4000 · 09/09/2019 01:32

Our cat litter goes in an outside bin. The thought of the smell if it went in the kitchen bin makes me queasy.

notangelinajolie · 09/09/2019 01:37

Can your at poo outside?

Whichoneofyoudidthat · 09/09/2019 01:39

I don't have cats, but I'm looking after one at the moment. I know nothing about these things and hate the smell of animal poo. It makes me gag.

I picked up the first bag of cat litter I saw at the supermarket and I think it must be one of those named by a poster upthread. It just doesn't smell. At all. So it goes in the inside bin. I don't know if anyone has an issue with it, because frankly they don't even know. I'm the ONLY one who ever empties the tray. which is why we will never get a permanent cat.

Hidingtonothing · 09/09/2019 01:41

Yep, you are right OP, we have a small metal dustbin just outside the back door (wheely bin has to live at the front) and litter parcels go in there til I do a proper 'bin run'. They used to go in the kitchen bin until I realised it permanently stunk and cleaning it wasn't solving it, the smell seems to permeate the plastic Envy (not envy)

BringMeAGinandTonic · 09/09/2019 02:54

You're not supposed to put cat feces down the toilet @HamsterHolder because of Toxoplasmosis harming aquatic life.

Bloomburger · 09/09/2019 04:41

Having a box of animal shit anywhere in your house is disgusting IMO so I'd have him shot for even considering it.

cats get toxop from birds and other prey. Toxop is everywhere in soil. There may be other good reasons not to put cat muck down loo, but I doubt toxop is one of them.

Aroundnabout1 · 09/09/2019 06:48

Omg, no no no. Cat poo in kitchen bin would stink really bad even if sealed in plastic bag. Those tommee tippee nappy wrappers also used to stink when u put a pooey one in.
For those who put the poo in the toilet, does it not have some cat litter stuck to it which could block the toilet?

Toddlerteaplease · 09/09/2019 06:48

I put my cats poo in a bag and put it in the kitchen bin. It's sealed in the bag so no smell.

adaline · 09/09/2019 07:33

@BringMeAGinandTonic toxoplasmosis is everywhere already - flushing cat poo down the toilet is no worse than letting your cat poo outside (which millions of cat owners do everyday without a second thought).

Branleuse · 09/09/2019 07:37

i wonder why the water treatment cannot get rid of diseases. I thought it was tested?

Plus, if its that bad for the environment, I presume it shouldnt be in landfill either. Its always swings and roundabouts for these things

Nanny0gg · 09/09/2019 07:56

I don't see how you can extract poo from litter to flush it anyway.
And what do you do with the clumps of wee?

Litter bins work well indoors or have a loo bin just outside

BruceAndNosh · 09/09/2019 08:03

There are a lot of things on MN that make me think that either others are being precious or I am a manky slut, but cat poo in kitchen bin?
That's gross!

Ponoka7 · 09/09/2019 08:17

Branleuse, the parasite dies after about a year. So dies off in landfill.

adaline, if you've lived in a country with water borne diseases, you'd understand the fear of creating that.

The only reason we have safe water in the developed world is because of the rules, procedures we follow.

If we stop following those rules en masse etc, then we once again have unsafe water.

It was because of Toxoplasmosis that we were advised to clean litter trays daily. The parasite takes 24 hours to activate.

But it would be rare for an indoor cat to be infected.

Globally toxoplasmosis is a big issue, but most of it comes from the meat eaten.

Soubriquet · 09/09/2019 08:18

I used to use flushable cat litter and flushed the poo straight down the toilet

Putting it in the kitchen bin is disgusting and I’m not one who washes their towels every day

TatianaLarina · 09/09/2019 08:27

According to my vet, toxoplasmosis is only really an issue in feral cats. It’s not common in domestic animals whether indoor or outdoor.
