AIBU to not understand why everyone likes this programme so much?

DH watches it and literally every time I walk in it is just people screaming obscenities at each other, hurting each other, or killing each other. Literally every time.

What is the appeal?

Trust me, watch it. It is a bit sweary and violent but it has clever plot twists, interesting storylines and at times can be very political.

Cheeserton · 08/09/2019 21:06

Odd question really. If your problem with a violence and swearing, you're basically writing off about half the films ever made and a huge number of series too.

Cheeserton · 08/09/2019 21:06

is with*

Sayhellotothethings · 08/09/2019 21:12

My problem isn't violence and swearing - my favourite film genre is horror. It's just that every single time I try and watch a bit of it, that is all it is. Maybe I miss the actual plot parts?

When DH first started watching it I was sick of the amount I heard "we're the peaky fucking blinders"

shesgrownhorns · 08/09/2019 21:20

I keep meaning to watch it, so bookmarking!

20viona · 08/09/2019 21:25

Oh thank god someone agrees!
Each to their own but my god, the accents are shite and the whole program is crap!

Drabarni · 08/09/2019 21:34

I watched one episode series one last week, I even had the free Netflix month to watch them.
Cancelled the freebie as don't usually watch shit films and tv, it was the worst thing I've seen in ages and not even realistic.

Sayhellotothethings · 08/09/2019 21:53

Omg people agree! Nobody else I've ever met dislike it!

20viona I agree about the accents, most of my family are from Birmingham and I'll admit it's not a pretty accent, a lot of people dislike it, but they make it sound so much worse.

OP posts:
20viona · 08/09/2019 21:56

@Sayhellotothethings It's not the Birmingham accent I have an issue with it's the dire delivery from the actors!
And everyone raves about Cillian Murphy too... 🤮🤮🤮 no thank you.
This thread has made me happy 😂

Moondancer73 · 08/09/2019 21:56

The appeal is that it's fast paced, gritty, well written and exciting.

Personally I don't see that the accents are that bad and they don't say peaky blinders THAT often. It's some of the best tv I've seen in recent years.

Sayhellotothethings · 08/09/2019 21:59

Moondancer73

I think I walk in/sit down to watch at really crap times so always hear it. DH agrees.

20viona agree about Cillian Murphy. Too baby faced for me!

likeafishneedsabike · 08/09/2019 22:03

No, no, no - it’s not Cillian Murphy that we’re fighting over. It’s Tommy (fucking) Shelby. The character, not the actor.
Having said that I’m not watching this season.

dowehaveastalker · 08/09/2019 22:08

maybe you just don't watch it then?! If you've missed the plot lines, and only ever seem to hear them swearing, then you can't have watched much at all which means you dont actually know the story, you cant just say you don like it because everytime you hear it, its swearing?!... I dont think the accent is bad - i think its quite good considering its not their natural accent?

FedUpMum40 · 08/09/2019 22:27

I love it, Purely for cillian Murphy, I love his character, although not enjoying this series so much, too political for me, I'm hanging on though

MadamePewter · 08/09/2019 22:30

I agree with OP. I started watching the first ever episode the other day to see what all the hype is about. It was shite.

Nottodayx · 08/09/2019 22:37

Tommy Shelby is the appeal.

Nottodayx · 08/09/2019 22:39

I think the first ever episode is a hard one to get in to. I tired twice.

A few people I know have also struggled with the first episode but stick with it and by episode three you will be gripped.

It’s absolutely brilliant.

DilysMoon · 08/09/2019 22:42

I agree I've tried twice to get in to it but didn't enjoy it at all.

MadamePewter · 08/09/2019 22:45

I too thought accents crap and whole thing very “acted”

Signifyingnothing · 08/09/2019 22:49

Are you me? I've been DESPERATELY trying to love this show. But even beautiful Gillian's beautiful cheekbones can't detract from his monotone performance, or from the utterly lacklustre writing.

Plus my favourite film genre is Horror. I have zero problems with the fighting or swearing. I do, however, hate the constant low lighting, whispering and general boredom it makes me feel.

Signifyingnothing · 08/09/2019 22:50

I obvs meant Cillian. But that's prob still spelt wrong.

HandsOffMyRights · 08/09/2019 22:50

I like Peaky Blinders. It's stylish. I am from Birmingham and my relatives lived in Small Heath and other areas, so it's interesting to watch and hear landmarks referenced.

But I do have a problem with the accents, sadly, because they can't get the Brummie accent quite right. There is only one authentic Brummie actor in the programme and everybody else (to my ears) clearly isn't from the city. It's a hard accent to master. The southern tones in particular of the main brother stand out especially!

Yaflamingalah · 08/09/2019 22:51

What is the appeal?

Cillian Murphy

Rivkka · 08/09/2019 22:58

Tommy fucking Shelby.

If he were real I'd sell my soul for an hour with him, sexiest character ever.

Fantababy · 08/09/2019 23:10

It's utter nonsense and the characters are vile. But it's very stylishly made and if you can suspend disbelief enough it's very compelling. I don't think I'd have stuck with it if DH didn't watch it but I do kind of like it. And while not remotely my type, I think CM is a brilliant actor.
