Peaky Blinders

AIBU to not understand why everyone likes this programme so much?

DH watches it and literally every time I walk in it is just people screaming obscenities at each other, hurting each other, or killing each other. Literally every time.

What is the appeal?

I love Peaky Blinders. It's cleverly written and the women characters are so strong. Tom Hardy's in it a few series on.

taytosandwich · 08/09/2019 23:24

'But even beautiful Gillian's beautiful cheekbones can't detract from his monotone performance, or from the utterly lacklustre writing.'

He's not monotone, that's the character he plays. His emotions have been deadened in the war, he lives inside his head and he gives nothing away by his expression. His actions show the turmoil going on inside his head.

I’ve been watching PB since the beginning and always loved it but last weeks episode really turned me off it. The stuff about tommy owning Lizzie and Arthur brutalising a man for talking to his wife. It was very heavy on the “women are possessions” theme and in a really nasty way. I just know there are men who will be loving that shit and using it as an green light to treat their own partners even worse. Maybe I’m overthinking that.

I did watch this week because I’m invested in it now but tbh I had half an eye on MN as well. This series just isn’t holding my attention as well.

Runningsmooth · 08/09/2019 23:26

It is fantastic! You are wrong. My evidence is that I love it and when I play 'Red Right Hand' when I'm driving I feel like I am cool as fuck.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 08/09/2019 23:27

because they can't get the Brummie accent quite right.

Not just the brummie accents. The billy boys leaders is appalling. Sam Neill’s should have had him banned from acting for life. Grin

Weezol · 08/09/2019 23:31

I really like it but I think sticking it in the Sunday wind down slot is a mistake. It's something you have to pay attention to, not background telly that eases you out of the weekend.

You also need to start from the very beginning otherwise you've no chance of figuring out who's related to who, how or why they love/hate each other.

I bloody love Aunt Polly - she's all kinds of wrong but she's still brilliant.

Sayhello I couldn’t get on with Line of Duty which it seems the entire country adored and I thought Fleabag was dross. It wouldn't do for us all to be the same!

HelenaDove · 08/09/2019 23:54

I love Peaky Blinders and i also couldnt get into Line of Duty.

HelenaDove · 08/09/2019 23:55

and Helen Mcrory is fabulous.

YANBU @Sayhellotothethings

I cannot get into it at ALL

And cannot see the appeal with Cillian Murphy.

Very odd looking chap. Not attractive at all IMO.

IdblowJonSnow · 09/09/2019 00:04

I didn't want to like the peaky blinders but have tried to watch it for a second time and I'm enjoying it now. Most of the accents are awful and the set looks like coronation street covered in mud/poo so I have a chortle when the characters, mainly Tommy, head up and down the street (several times per episode in slow mo).
I like the female characters and think CM is a good actor. Only on season 2 so far.

HelenaDove · 09/09/2019 00:21

Cillian comes across as a nice bloke in interviews. There is an interview with him on the back page of this months Woman and Home for those who are interested.

TomPinch · 09/09/2019 01:19

The Russians in S3 were a bit silly.

StoneofDestiny · 09/09/2019 02:50

Fantastic series, great writing and some good political twists and turns. Yes, it's violent but they are meant to be a group of hard faced thugs!

taytosandwich · 09/09/2019 08:53

'I just know there are men who will be loving that shit and using it as an green light to treat their own partners even worse'

Anyone who is using the peaky blinders as role models has pretty serious issues already tbh Confused

Oh I know that. Doesn’t mean they aren’t doing it though.

Sayhellotothethings · 09/09/2019 09:22

dowehaveastalker are you the producer of Peaky Blinders? You seem to have taken great offence.

Most of the accents are awful and the set looks like coronation street covered in mud/poo

I laughed out loud!

I have tried to go back and to watch the first couple of episodes like some of you have, as frankly it's a PITA when DH likes to watch a series on a weekend that I can't stand (I end up busying myself with something like ironing) but I just can't get in to it.

The whole thing reminds me of the scene from HP and the Half Blood Prince where Snape is slinking through the streets and then makes the unbreakable vow.

Dh loves it. I hate it. Have to leave the room when it's on.

cleofatra · 09/09/2019 09:25

Its rubbish. Just another soap.

Weezol · 09/09/2019 09:28

The billy boys leaders is appalling.

Agreed - I was having flashbacks to the terrible 'Oirish' accents in Sons of Anarchy.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 09/09/2019 09:29

Aiden Gillen though 😍 even as aberama gold.

I'd love to be his gipsy queen. Grin

Sam Neil's accent in season one was indeed comedically bad. The others aren't too terrible most of the time. It's ludicrous and very stylised, you have to accept that if you're going to watch it (orgies with the White Russians anyone?), but I have enjoyed it. I like a bit of brutal and dark and, and I like seeing the Midlands centre stage. And I have had the fanny gallops for Cillian Murphy for about 20 years, he is utterly beautiful. And Helen McCrory is spellbinding. I'm struggling a bit to get into this Season though, I have to say.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/09/2019 12:49

No no no. As far as bad accents the winner by far is Adrien Brody doing a very bad imitation of Marlon Brando's Vito Corleone.

I watched 3 episodes before I was hooked. New season doesn't premiere here til 4 Oct. Can't wait!

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 09/09/2019 12:54

Yes! Grin it was like a sketch show during his scenes.
