Lighthearted - to be called a “manky mare” for mopping first then vacuuming

My sister is staying at my flat for a few days while she is getting hers painted. While sharing the cleaning the other day she screeched I was a manky mare for mopping my wood floor and bathroom before vacuuming. I very calmly explained I prefer to loosen any dirt and debris then vacuum but she said it’s not how it’s done

We then called our mum to ask her who is right but her response was she was so happy we’re fighting over cleaning and not men and hung up on us. My sister then re-mopped my floor.

I know it’s not what people do but is it really that unreasonable to mop first??

Ooh that's odd and I'd have to agree with your sister.

Your Mum is hilarious.

Plasebeafleabite · 05/09/2019 17:47

Are you vacuuming up wet bits? Can’t be good for your hoover

Me2you3 · 05/09/2019 17:48

You sound like a comedy duo and your mum is a great laugh too Grin

Me2you3 · 05/09/2019 17:49

Your sister is obviously right though

GiveMeHope103 · 05/09/2019 17:50

I'm with your sister. Thats gross.

ThisIsAllaMooPoint · 05/09/2019 17:50

@FudgeBrownie2019 yep our mum is brilliant! Grin

No the floor is dry before I vacuum.

Depends how frequently you vacuum or sweep really. At best I mop once a week but tend to sweep most days so shouldn't need to sweep before mopping. Definitely need to sweep/vacuum after mopping for best finish- would end up vacuuming twice if it had been too long since I'd swept!

itsboiledeggsagain · 05/09/2019 17:50

I sometimes do this if mopping is desperate and hoovering can wait

DurhamDurham · 05/09/2019 17:51

That's a very odd way to do things, you have to hoover first so that when you mop you're cleaning the actual floor not all the crumbs and stuff on it.
Do you always do things the wrong way around ? Grin

Loving your Mum

Qwerty19 · 05/09/2019 17:52

Hoover then mop
Agree with your sis.

AMidsummersNightsNightmare · 05/09/2019 17:53

I agree with your sister

zxcvhjkl · 05/09/2019 17:53

Depends.

If there is a significant amount of loose dust/dirt/debris then I would hoover first and then mop.

If it just a general clean then and no obvious debris or dust then I would just mop.

however if said mopping caused debris I would then hoover when dry.

HTH.

Cantthinkofanythingrightnow · 05/09/2019 17:54

Yes hoovering first of course and then mop to scrub anything the hoover doesn't lift.

BillywigSting · 05/09/2019 17:55

I can sort of see your logic but I still think you're wrong sorry.

You mop a dirty floor and just swill the dirt around.

You brush it first to get the loose bits and then mop to get the stuck on bits and bits too fine to sweep up.

Bookworm4 · 05/09/2019 17:57

Slattern of a woman you are, mum gets a ⭐️⭐️

NoSquirrels · 05/09/2019 17:57

I think it sounds odd but I’m sure I’ve been told (or read on MN) that the correct way professionals do it is your way, mop then hoover.

I do it the other way, because once I’ve mopped I cba to get the hoover out too.

ThisIsAllaMooPoint · 05/09/2019 17:58

@DurhamDurham I put cream first then jam on a scone which is the ‘wrong’ way apparently!

So majority says I am unreasonable. Sigh

purplebutterfly90 · 05/09/2019 17:59

Hoover and then mop 100%, sorry.

x2boys · 05/09/2019 18:00

Would it not be easier to sweep and than mop?

ThisIsAllaMooPoint · 05/09/2019 18:00

For all of you saying what a star my mum is - she brought up us on her own and while things were tough it was never dull! She is the best

Raphael34 · 05/09/2019 18:01

I hoover, then mop, then hoover again

Raphael34 · 05/09/2019 18:01

(When the floors dried that is)

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 05/09/2019 18:06

Definitely hoover first then mop.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 05/09/2019 18:06

Yeah you’re weird! Grin

Mopping first means sloshing lots of bits of dirt, crumbs and hair etc around the floor with your mop and then clinging to your mop (do you wash your mop head properly every time you use it or are all these bits drying encrusted to your mop head?) and then you have to wait until the floor is completely dry before hoovering or else you’ll be hoover streaks all over the floor, some of the crud will still be wet and will smear, your hoover bristles will get covered in the grime and spread it all over the “clean” mopped floor. Your floors are far from clean Grin

Do it the right way!
