Lighthearted - to be called a “manky mare” for mopping first then vacuuming

My sister is staying at my flat for a few days while she is getting hers painted. While sharing the cleaning the other day she screeched I was a manky mare for mopping my wood floor and bathroom before vacuuming. I very calmly explained I prefer to loosen any dirt and debris then vacuum but she said it’s not how it’s done

We then called our mum to ask her who is right but her response was she was so happy we’re fighting over cleaning and not men and hung up on us. My sister then re-mopped my floor.

I know it’s not what people do but is it really that unreasonable to mop first??

I'd say it depends on the mop, if it's the floppy stringy sort then it'd just get all bitty and horrible but if it's the straight solid sponge I find that's better for pet hair as it stops it floofing up in the air.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 06/09/2019 08:40

Your mum raised your sister right, not sure what went wrong with you.

JayDot500 · 06/09/2019 08:42

I do this! I mop first because there will always be bits that end up on the floor and I end up vacuuming again. Obviously, I wait until the floor is completely dry before I vacuum Hmm

MyOtherProfile · 06/09/2019 08:43

My word this thread! Hoover then mop, jam then cream. Obvs. At least you pronounce scone correctly. There may be some hope for you.

Haworthia · 06/09/2019 08:45

Your floors must be coated with filth if you need to loosen it all up with a mop before hoovering (j/k)

I’m sure they’re not. Try hoovering first. Personally I hate mopping a finding crumbs/grit I’ve missed with the hoover. You just move it around, wetly. Gross.

Lowlandlucky · 06/09/2019 08:48

Mop then hoover

Elieza · 06/09/2019 08:51

Have a ‘mop off’ competition with your sister on alternate days and see which method works best! If she’s there a while try each other’s way and see how it works out for you.
It’s scon (rhymes with John). Not scoan (rhymes with moan).

Fillings, now that’s a tougher, i my have to try both methods to see which is best.... GrinCakeBrew

I brush my living room floor then mop but if there's any bits left over I'll brush again. I only really hoover carpet.

whattodowith · 06/09/2019 10:52

Your sister is correct. I always vacuum/sweep then mop otherwise I’d be sweeping/vacuuming a wet floor which is daft.

PettyContractor · 06/09/2019 10:52

I note that the only cleaner on the thread has agreed that the OP's way is best. Maybe this thread is a rare example of the minority view being right?

GooodMythicalMorning · 06/09/2019 10:54

Cleaner here, we mop then hoover.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 06/09/2019 11:10

Nope! You missed my post

I (cleaner) have never come across a floor dirty enough that the dirt needed to loosened up first before it would hoover up. Some bits need a couple of runs over with the hoover or the nozzle but never ever had a floor that wasn’t clean after. Hoover and a mop. (Rather than a mop-hoover-mop) I doubt your floors are that dirty either OP. I think you can get away with hoovering and just mopping once.

hammeringinmyhead · 06/09/2019 11:16

I steam mop first. All the dust sticks to the head and then I throw the head cover in the washing machine.

If I hoover first, all the dust round the bottom of the skirting board gets spread around when mopping as the Dyson doesn't reach it. Hoovering after sucks it all up because it moves it into the middle of the floor.

Oysterbabe · 06/09/2019 11:18

My cleaner hoovers then mops.

karenbokaren · 06/09/2019 15:41

Urgh. The thought of mopping before hoovering has made me feel itchy and horrid.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 06/09/2019 15:45

I hoover mop hoover.

emilybrontescorsett · 06/09/2019 16:14

How can it be scone as in John.
It’s a split digraph, so the o-e makes a o sound as in ‘open’. Not an o sound as in ‘on’.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 06/09/2019 16:18

So how do you say “gone” then?

emilybrontescorsett · 06/09/2019 16:29

😲😲😲you are right gone rhymes with John.
I couldn’t think of a word where we don’t pronounce the o as in open when it is o-e.
Interesting 😵
I’m still putting jam on first though!

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 06/09/2019 17:01

And then we have “done” Grin

Paraballa · 06/09/2019 19:09

I vacuum, then mop, then vacuum again.

LochJessMonster · 06/09/2019 19:14

Why are you all hoovering a moppable floor??

Surely hoovering is for carpets and sweep+mop is for hard floors?

HerRoyalFattyness · 06/09/2019 19:21

Sweep then mop. You oddball Grin

hammeringinmyhead · 06/09/2019 19:37

Nooo. My hoover has a button you press to retract the carpet brushes for hard floors.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 06/09/2019 20:48

Surely hoovering is for carpets and sweep+mop is for hard floors?

You do know most hoovers have a hardfloor setting? The bristles come out on the head so no scraping the floor.
